revised 11/13 COMMEDIA CENTRE COUNTY REPORT COMRADIO w e b s i t e s An introduction to contributing to the websites The College of Communication website is home to the best work of all our students. It uses a custom CMS - Content Management System. All modern websites use some kind of CMS - it s a way of organizing and storing content and simplifying the upkeep and appearance of the website. And, luckily for all of us, it is, relatively, easy to add content. BEFORE you can post, you must create a User Profile. Go here: http://commedia.psu.edu/users/create User Name: Screen Name: Email: Password: use your Penn State access ID First Name, Last Name Your preferred email Your choice. Pick one you can remember. It is difficult for us to reset your password.

PROFILE INFORMATION Fill out as completely as possible This is a one-time step Click Create User Click to edit your information The picture should be a tightly cropped headshot. It must be 120 pixels wide, 150 pixels tall, 72 dpi. If the picture is larger than 120x150 it will not upload. Upload photo and resume Click Update User Prepare Your Content Before you can post, you must make sure you have your content in the proper format VIDEO Video must be in the H.264 format. Use Adobe Media Encoder or Adobe Premiere to convert your Video. There is a preset specifically for posting to Commedia. 2

Change Format to H.264 Select ComMedia CMS 2013 as your preset Export An.mp4 file will be created. Use this file for posting. (Remember to create a high quality version for showing in class - you can use the Archive setting above. TEXT Create text document Text Edit is preferred. IF you use Word make sure you the paste from word tool: PHO- Save as jpegs at highest quality You must resize(in Photoshop Image>Image size) Horizontals: 1500 pixels wide Verticals: 900 pixels high TOS SOUNDSLIDES Use images that are sized the same as Photos above Set custom size in Soundslides to 760x500 Template: Black template, black main background, dark gray progress bar. Shell: pull down from default to html5 enabled. Send me the publish_to_web file and I will upload it to the server and place it on your page. Embed Code: (Where FOLDER is the name of your publish_to_web) <iframe src="/uploads/commedia/folder/_files/iframe.html?noscale=760x570" width="760" height="570" scrolling="no" frameborder="0"></iframe> 3

GETTING STARTED NOW YOU ARE READY TO ADD CONTENT LOGIN AT: http://commedia.psu.edu/admin After you login: Click Entry - either under Create for a new story, or Modify to edit an existing story. To Create a New Entry - select Stories Start with the Publish tab to add content 4

IF you want to paste from a Word document or other formatted source, use the paste from Word button * = required fields. Story Tags: Keywords for searching Story Update: Use if you need to indicate the story has changed Related Sources: Add links, link to other stories, upload a related file Feature Video: If the file will have a lead video as the top element on the page, enter it in Feature Video and select video as the story category. The video will use the yellow-starred image uploaded to story images as a preview. Story Images: Click upload to add images. After uploading you can add a caption and credit. Click the star to make this the featured image. 5

Thumbnail Quote: Use if you have a quote instead of an image for front page thumbnail Thumbnail quote: You do not have to put quote marks around the quote, just enter the text. There is a character limit that is approximately 8-10 words. By default, then entry date is when you created the story. Change the entry date if you want this publish at a different time. Only use the expiration date if there is a reason to expire the story. Content Category will almost always be News for 481 students (sometimes Sports.) Select the appropriate Media Type. (see below) Category & Media Types Use Story unless the lead element is a video (in which case you select video) or a photo gallery (select photo). You can select multiple categories if, for example, you wanted a story with a video on top and a photo gallery at the bottom of the package. 6
