It uses a custom CMS - Content Management System. All modern websites use some kind of CMS - it s a way of organizing and storing content and simplifying the upkeep and appearance of the website. And, luckily for all of us, it is, relatively, easy to add content. BEFORE you can post, you must create a User Profile. Go here: http://commedia.psu.edu/users/create User Name: Screen Name: Email: Password: use your Penn State access ID First Name, Last Name Your preferred email Your choice. Pick one you can remember. It is difficult for us to reset your password.
PROFILE INFORMATION Fill out as completely as possible This is a one-time step Click Create User Click to edit your information The picture should be a tightly cropped headshot. It must be 120 pixels wide, 150 pixels tall, 72 dpi. If the picture is larger than 120x150 it will not upload. Upload photo and resume Click Update User Prepare Your Content Before you can post, you must make sure you have your content in the proper format VIDEO Video must be in the H.264 format. Use Adobe Media Encoder or Adobe Premiere to convert your Video. There is a preset specifically for posting to Commedia. 2
Change Format to H.264 Select ComMedia CMS 2013 as your preset Export An.mp4 file will be created. Use this file for posting. (Remember to create a high quality version for showing in class - you can use the Archive setting above. TEXT Create text document Text Edit is preferred. IF you use Word make sure you the paste from word tool: PHO- Save as jpegs at highest quality You must resize(in Photoshop Image>Image size) Horizontals: 1500 pixels wide Verticals: 900 pixels high TOS SOUNDSLIDES Use images that are sized the same as Photos above Set custom size in Soundslides to 760x500 Template: Black template, black main background, dark gray progress bar. Shell: pull down from default to html5 enabled. Send me the publish_to_web file and I will upload it to the server and place it on your page. GETTING STARTED NOW YOU ARE READY TO ADD CONTENT LOGIN AT: http://commedia.psu.edu/admin After you login: Click Entry - either under Create for a new story, or Modify to edit an existing story. To Create a New Entry - select Stories Start with the Publish tab to add content 4
IF you want to paste from a Word document or other formatted source, use the paste from Word button * = required fields. Story will not save without them *Title: Name: your story URL Title: automatically generated from your Title (you may change this, but you usually don t need to) Subtitle: Optional, useful for feature stories *Story Body: Where the content goes *Story Byline: First Last name of author (If you are unsure of the author name, enter College of Communications in the author field.) Story Tags: Keywords for searching Story Update: Use if you need to indicate the story has changed Related Sources: Add links, link to other stories, upload a related file Feature Video: If the file will have a lead video as the top element on the page, enter it in Feature Video and select video as the story category. The video will use the yellow-starred image uploaded to story images as a preview. Story Images: Click upload to add images. After uploading you can add a caption and credit. Click the star to make this the featured image. 5
Thumbnail Quote: Use if you have a quote instead of an image for front page thumbnail Thumbnail quote: You do not have to put quote marks around the quote, just enter the text. There is a character limit that is approximately 8-10 words. By default, then entry date is when you created the story. Change the entry date if you want this publish at a different time. Only use the expiration date if there is a reason to expire the story. Content Category will almost always be News for 481 students (sometimes Sports.) Select the appropriate Media Type. (see below) Category & Media Types Use Story unless the lead element is a video (in which case you select video) or a photo gallery (select photo). If you select photo EVERY image upload to Story Images will appear in the gallery. Click and drag using the arrow icon to change the order of photos in Story Images. You can select multiple categories if, for example, you wanted a story with a video on top and a photo gallery at the bottom of the package. 6

Assigned contributor profiles will show up on the bottom of the story page ADD YOURSELF SO YOU SHOW UP You must have a photo on your profile page to show up on the site. Lets you see a preview of the story For greater control, use the Media Types Select one image and video placement tools. If you use the video placement tool, you must have an encoded video and a 768x432 preview image ready to upload at the same time. Story: Photo: Video: Primarily a text story. You can insert photos and video into a text story. For Photo Galleries. Use the Story Images tab to upload images and create a gallery For Video-centric stories. Video will be at that the top. POSTING VIDEO You ll need your converted video (see above) AND an image to use as the poster 8
image sized to 768x432). Use the preset in Adobe Premiere for Commedia under H.264 If you have one main video as your primary content, use the Feature Video tab Click Add File 1. Select our class folder - 481_wy 2. Click upload a file - navigate to your properly sized video file. 3. After it uploads, select Add a File to place it on your video page Then add your still photo to use as the poster frame Click Upload Image 1. Delete the text in the Title field 2. Add a short caption 3. Put your name, first and last in the Credit field 4. Click the star to make it yellow For adding additional videos use the jwplayer button 9
Place your cursor where you want the video in the story. Click the jwplayer button: Use the Browse Server buttons to upload your video and poster image to the server You ll upload both the properly sized video and then the photo from the same box. Change Player type to Video. Posting Soundslides I need to upload your publish_to_web folder to the server Once that is done, Click in the Story field where you want the show, and switch to Source Paste in the embed code: (replace FOLDER with the name of your publish_to_web) <iframe src="/uploads/commedia/folder/_files/iframe.html?noscale=760x570" width="760" height="570" scrolling="no" frameborder="0"></iframe> When you re done, let me know so I can check your work and make the story go live. 10
