TOOLS REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION! Next, assemble the following tools that will be needed for installing your vertical braces: Electric drill & extension cord 5/16 socket driver Screwdriver Hammer Scissors or utility knife Vacuum cleaner Crescent or socket wrench set 5/16 drill bit 13/64 Drill bit ½ masonry drill bit The bits provided are used to drill holes, with the 3/16 masonry bit provided, into the door header for the Top Bracket, and for drilling three 3/16 pilot holes followed by three larger holes with the 1/2 masonry bit into the garage floor to mount the Floor Flange. You will need a 5/16 metal drill bit for drilling holes to mount the Pin Bracket Part (K) in Step 7 Intermediate connections. You will need a 13/64 metal bit to drill for pilot holes on the Pin Bracket Top and Bottom connections fastened with 1/4"-20 x 1/2 type 23 thread cutting screws Step #7. AT NO TIME SHOULD ANY HOLES BE DRILLED INTO THE ALUMINUM BRACE TOP AND BOTTOM PROFILES, OR ANY OTHER PART OF THIS BRACE KIT.

Step 1. Thread a 3/8-16 thread nut (part A) onto each side of the U-bolt (part B) about one-third to one-half of towards the U-end. Next push both U-bolt plates (part C) onto the U-bolt, and then screw the remaining two 3/8-16 nuts (part 1) onto the end of the U-bolt. Push a U-bolt black plastic end cap (part D) over each end of the U-bolt. When this step is finished, the U-bolt assembly should look like the one in the photo below: Step 2. Pull the Top Profile partially out of the Bottom Profile. Place one of the 1/4"-20 thread x 3/4" hex bolts (part F) and into the slotted channel in the center on one side of the Top Profile. Step 3. Place the U-bolt assembly over the end of the Top Profile (part E) with a plate on each side of the flat side leaving about 2 of the inner profile above the assembly (as pictured below). Step 4. Locate two of the remaining 1/4"-20 x 3/4" bolts (part F) and insert one through each side hole in the floor flange (part G) with the head on the inside (see below left photo). Screw a 1/4"-20 Ny-loc nut (part H) on the outside of the flange on each of the two bolts until fingertight. Align the heads with the slotted track on the Bottom Profile (part I) and slide the floor flange onto the Bottom Profile until the end of the Bottom Profile is even with the bottom of the floor flange and tighten nuts with a wrench.

Step 5. Locate the remaining twelve 1/4"-20 x 3/4 hex bolts (part F) and insert the heads of six of the bolts into the two channels by alternating channels. Repeat this with six more on the other side of the Bottom Profile (see photo above on right). Insert the last remaining 1/4"-20 x 3/4 hex bolt head into the channel of the Bottom Profile on the same side as you inserted the one in the top profile in step 4 so that side of the bottom profile has six bolts exposed with three in one channel and three in the other channel. Step 6. Turn the two sections of the brace to the side where you can see the three 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex bolts and place them near the juncture of the Top Profile and Bottom Profile. Put the T Secure Clip (Part J) over the three bolts and then screw three 1/4-20 Ny-loc nuts onto the bolts (see photo on left below). Hand-tighten all of the nuts at this juncture. Step 7 Note: Doors with multiple braces can be installed 12 from either side of the mid span, and at the quarter span of the door width. Be sure to vertically align all pin brackets part (K) from top to bottom. Top section rail connection 1 2 3 Place bottom of the pin bracket (Part K) 3 from the top of the door. (depicted in picture above far left.) Mark hole locations, then drill 13/64 pilot hole. Fasten pin bracket (Part K) using 1/4-20 x 1/2 type 23 thread cutting screws Part(L)

Intermediate section rail connections 1 2 3 Place pin bracket Part (K) on top of the fin of the lower rail with the roll + 1/8 over the edge. Mark hole locations and use 5/16 drill bit and drill through the fin. Fasten the pin bracket Part (K) using the 1/4"-20 x 1/2" Carriage bolts part (M). Intermediate section rail connections (for doors with Auxiliary stiffening strut) 1 2 3 For doors with Auxiliary stiffening struts: Place pin bracket Part (K) on top of the stiffening strut with the roll + 1/8 over the edge. Mark hole locations and use 5/16 drill bit and drill through the stiffener. Fasten the pin bracket Part (K) using the 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Carriage bolts part (N). Bottom section rail connection Place bottom of pin bracket Part (K) 3 from the bottom of the door above picture far left. Mark hole locations, then drill 13/64 pilot hole. Fasten pin bracket using 1/4-20 x 1/2 type 23 thread cutting screws Part(L) Step 8. Align the Top Bracket part (O) above the garage door on the header in a vertical line with the row of Pin brackets (K), you will be using for this brace. The very top of the Top Bracket must be even with the top of the wood header above the door, as shown in the picture above on the right. This will ensure no interference with the door as it opens, and allow sufficient room from the bottom edge of the HEADER or concrete tie beam, to provide the holding power needed. With the Top Bracket in place, mark the (four) holes using the Top Bracket as a template and then remove the Top Bracket and drill the holes with the 3/16 masonry drill bit provided (part P). Be sure to drill deep enough for the fastener. Once the drilling is complete, place the Top Bracket back in place and mount permanently with the four 3/16 x 3¼ Tap Cons (part Q), using your electric drill and 5/16 socket driver bit or a ratchet set to secure top bracket to header.

The Top Bracket must be securely fastened through the header and into the garage structure behind the header.. TAPCONS ARE FOR USE IN MASONRY AND MOST ALL HEADERS IN CONCRETE BLOCK STRUCTURES ARE POURED CONCRETE WITH STEEL REINFORCEMENT. IF YOUR HOME IS WOOD-FRAME CONSTRUCTION, USE THE ¼ X 3 WOOD LAG SCREWS ALSO PROVIDED IN THE KIT IN LIEU OF THE TAPCONS. IF STEEL, USE THE 1/4"-20 HEX HEAD TYPE 23 THREAD CUTTING SCREW. PILOT HOLE WITH A 13/64 METAL DRILL BIT. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE SMALLER TAP CONS OR WOOD SCREWS TO MAKE THIS STEP EASIER; IT WILL REDUCE THE HOLDING POWER OF THE BRACE. After completing the installation of the Top Bracket, open and close the door to ensure the door clears the upper bracket placement Step 9. Take two of the deflection brackets (part R). Be sure to note which end of the bracket has one hole because the end with one hole is the end of the bracket that attaches to the Pin bracket part (K). Attach the end of the deflection brackets with the one hole to each of the pin brackets using the 1/4"-20 x 3 ½ hex head bolts (part S) and wing nuts (part T). To do so, insert the hex bolt through the one-hole end of the deflection bracket, then through the throat (channel) of the pin bracket (part K), and then through the one-hole end of the second deflection bracket, securing the bolt on the outside of the second bracket with a wing nut as shown in the picture that follows. Repeat this for each hinge so that all ten deflection brackets are attached to the hinges in five pairs of two. Only tighten the wing nut two or three turns; repeat with the other two or three hinges. Each pair will look like the pair pictured below. The deflection brackets will be attached to the brace in step 10 Top Section connection Intermediate Section connection Bottom Section connection

Step 10. Stand the brace upright and hook the U-Bolt into the Top Bracket, then extend the brace tight to the floor. Adjust the U-Bolt nuts and plates until the brace is as close and as parallel to the garage door as possible. Then tighten the U-bolt assembly and tighten the remaining nut on the T Secure Clip on the side of the brace to fix the length of the brace. Step 11. Starting at the pin bracket nearest the top of the brace, place the vinyl spacers (made from part (V) by cutting the tubing into ten 3/8 pieces as shown in the pictures below ) over each of the bolts protruding from the side of the brace. Then move the protruding bolts with spacers attached up or down in the track to be at the same height as the pin bracket part (K). When in the proper location, push the vinyl spacer hard into the channel to keep the bolt from sliding back down the channel. Place the deflection bracket over the bolt (as pictured on the lower left) and secure with the 1/4"-20 ny-loc nut to where the rubber is slightly compressed. Tighten the wing nuts finger-tight. Repeat this with all ten of the deflection brackets. Then install the deflection bracket plastic end caps (part U) over the end of the deflection bracket that protrudes into the garage (see photo below on the left) 3/8 Vinyl spacer 3/8 Vinyl Spacer Step 12. Step 13. Mark through the Floor Flange onto the concrete floor beneath where each of the three bolts will be fastened to secure the brace to the floor. Remove the brace by loosening the wing nuts and detaching the deflections brackets from the pin brackets at the pin bracket end only. Remove the brace from the door and replace the bolts and wing nuts through the outer end of the pairs of deflection brackets so they do not get lost. Drill the three holes into the concrete garage floor, using the 3/16 masonry drill bit provided, in the center of each mark from Step 12, then drill the actual holes with a 1/2 masonry bit to a depth of 1 3/4, and clean out the holes by vacuuming or blowing out the debris. If you do not have a portable vacuum then an ear syringe or turkey baster inserted into the hole and squeezed will suffice to remove the residual dust from drilling. Insert the 3/8 drop-in anchors (part W) with the lip and thread side up into the hole. The top should be flush with the top of the concrete floor. Then using the set tool provided part (X) by placing the small end in the anchor center, hammer hard on the tool head several times in the center to seat the lead stop in the center of the anchor. If not completely seated, the bottom of the anchor will not spread and the lead stop will prevent the bolt from screwing flush to the floor when the brace is removed.

Step 14. Re-install the brace by sliding the U-Bolt over the Top Bracket and pushing the brace in place tight against the door. Re-attach the deflection brackets to the pin brackets part (K) using the bolts and wing nuts. Install the three 3/8 round heavy duty bolts with large slotted heads (Part Y) through the Floor Flange into the anchors in the concrete garage floor. ADDITIONAL STEP WHEN INSTALLING BRACES IN THE HIGH VELOCITY HURRICANE ZONE or HVHZ (Miami Dade and Broward Counties in Florida) since the code requirements in the HVHZ require the braces to be permanently attached to the garage door system Step 15. Use the 1/8 Aviation Cable(s) to permanently fasten the brace(s). Cables vary in length per door specs and brace quantities. Install one end of the aviation cables through one of the lower bolts that connect the 1/4-20 x Hex bolts and wing nuts. (installed as depicted in the picture on the left below) and the other end to the wood buck outside of the track on the side closest to the brace as shown in the picture on the right below. If installing multiple braces, mark each brace with a permanent marker to indicate L for left, C for Center, and R for right. Although each brace could be adjusted to fit another location, keeping the braces pre-adjusted facilitates quick installation when a storm approaches. Installation of your brace is now complete. Your brace can be removed for storage by detaching the mounting brackets from the pin brackets and unscrewing the floor bolts. Keep the floor bolts screwed in place when the brace is not in use to keep the holes free from dirt and debris. We recommend that you guard against the loss of the attachment parts by re-inserting the bolts through the deflection brackets that remain attached to the brace and screwing the wing nuts onto the bolts. Store the brace by lying it flat on the floor, up against the corner of the garage or by fabricating a hanger or strap to hold it safely out of the traffic area and to prevent it from falling on either the cars or persons.
