FOUNDATION AND INSTITUTIONAL MISSION The Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC) is a public institution related to the Ministry of Education. It was founded in response to an intensive public mobilization and created by the Federal Law 2,373 of December, 1954. Still keeping its first slogan the universal through the regional, the UFC is truly committed to solve local problems, without forgetting the universal feature of its production.

GENERAL PRESENTATION The Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC) is recognized as one of the best federal institutions of higher education in Brazil. Therefore it represents an important scientific and cultural heritage of Ceará s people. Four centers (Science, Agricultural Sciences, Human Sciences, and Technology) Five colleges (Law; Education; Economics, Administration, Actuarial Sciences, and Accounting; Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Nursing; and Medicine) Four institutes (Sea Sciences, Culture and Art, Health Sciences and UFC Virtual Institute) three campi (in the cities of Sobral and Quixadá and in Cariri region).

PERSONNEL The UFC has a total of 2,000 faculty members. 1,269 hold a PhD degree 426 hold a master s degree The technical and administrative staff is composed of 3,450 members.

UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION Total of 114 undergraduate programs 106 undergraduate programs - 26,000 students 8 distance undergraduate programs - 5,000 students GRADUATE EDUCATION Total of 97 graduate programs 9 professional master programs - nearly 500 students 49 academic master programs - 2,000 students 39 doctoral programs - approximately 1,100 students CENTER OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES 5,636 students who took part in the continuing education program - English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish

RESEARCH About 360 research groups in several different areas These are undertaking both basic and applied researches and are, in general, supported by institutions such as CAPES Coordination Office for the Improvement of Staff with Higher Education, CNPq National Council for Scientific and Technologic Development, FINEP Sponsoring Agency for Researches and Projects, at the national level, and FUNCAP Cearense Foundation for the Development of Researches, and BNB the Northeastern Bank of Brazil (Banco do Nordeste do Brasil), at the regional level. The research activities are often organized in research groups, which currently sum into 247.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS The UFC has a large experience in international cooperation and exchange programs with foreign universities and other types of foreign institutions. Currently it keeps 99 agreements with universities from 17 different countries. PEC-G Participation in 4 Erasmus Mundus mobility projects: Eubranex, Mundus17, Emundus15, Emundus17. Participation in 15 university international networks (Aridas, AULP, Bracerb, Double Degree, Emundus15, Emundus17, Eubranex, Mundus17, Fodepal, Grupo Coimbra de Universidades Brasileiras, Grupo Tordesilhas, Redibep, OUI, UDUAL, Universia).
