Basic Revit Review 4 WWW.BENTLEY.COM 2014 Bentley Systems, Incorporated Revit Terms Term worksharing central model local model workset Local central model Revit Server term Definition A design method that allows multiple team members to work on the same project model at the same time. The master project model for a workshared project. The central model stores the current ownership information for all elements in the project, and acts as the distribution point for all changes published to the file. All users save their own local copies of the central model, work locally, and then synchronize with central so that other users can see their work. A copy of the project model that resides on the computer system of the team member who is working on the model. When worksharing is used to distribute project work among team members, each member uses a local model to work on his or her workset (functional area). Team members periodically save their changes to the central model so that others can see the changes and update their local model with the latest project information. A collection of elements in a project. A workset is typically a discrete functional area, such as interior, exterior, site, or parking. A workset is typically a discrete functional area, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or piping. When you enable worksharing, you can divide a project into worksets, with different team members responsible for each workset. The local server silently requests updated information from the central model on the central server, transferring data over the WAN. In this fashion, the Revit central models on local servers and the central server stay synchronized. Therefore, your team members can use local central models on a LAN for their ongoing design and without always having to wait for information to transfer over a WAN. 5 WWW.BENTLEY.COM Standard Revit File on a LAN File Server 6 WWW.BENTLEY.COM P r o j e c t W i s e F o r t h e R e v i t U s e r - W o r k s h o p Page 3

Login to the Class Dataset On your desktop are two virtual machines: LEARN_PWINT is your integration server LEARN_PWCLT is a Revit Client For this class we will be using Revit 2015. The ProjectWise Explorer is version 08.11.11.590 with the new Revit Plugin version 08.11.11.789 EXERCISE 1 Logon to the Class Dataset Select LEARN_PWCLT Select the user Learner The Password is learn The Most Common Integration Error The most common support call for Revit is problems with crashes when opening a file. Surprisingly the most common cause is an incorrect application association in ProjectWise. There are several reasons that this can happen. Applications should always be associated to program groups. Program groups are created in the registry of the current client by PWE when integration is installed. P r o j e c t W i s e F o r t h e R e v i t U s e r - W o r k s h o p Page 9

Here are some examples of Bad Program Associations EXERCISE 2 The Incorrect Default Revit Program Group Open ProjectWise Administrator and look at the ProjectWise Revit Application Login to ProjectWise Integration Examples Login: Student Password: learn Select Applications Select Autodesk Revit and Right-Click to Select Properties In the dialog that opens select the Actions Tab P r o j e c t W i s e F o r t h e R e v i t U s e r - W o r k s h o p Page 10

This actions dialog for Autodesk Revit shows the Application that is installed when the datasource is created. It was designed to open unintegrated Revit files and will cause issues with integrated Revit. Look at the program class name Revit.Project. Is is not one of the groups delivered by the Revit Installer. NOTE: This has been fixed in the current version and delivers an integrated command. I recommend that you delete this program group in favor of application groups that specify the Revit Version. Delete the Autodesk Revit Application Cancel the Properties Dialog Right click on Autodesk Revit and Delete it. P r o j e c t W i s e F o r t h e R e v i t U s e r - W o r k s h o p Page 11

EXERCISE 3 Open Revit with the Correct Vertical Although there are multiple program groups available it is a best practice to use the correct vertical. Examine the Revit 2015 Association Open the Properties dialog for Revit 2015 What do you see for the open action? Highlight the open action and select Modify Select the and examine the program groups. Select the second Revit option. Multiple groups are created by the installer when integration is installed for any Autodesk product. ProjectWise-integrated Revit ( Revit.Document.PW) is the generic group used by default. On a client where there is more than one Revit version installed it should point to the latest version installed. ProjectWise-integrated Revit 2015 (Revit.Document.PW.OB.2015) is the version specific vertical group. It will point first to the Product and second to an Autodesk Vertical Application. P r o j e c t W i s e F o r t h e R e v i t U s e r - W o r k s h o p Page 12

EXERCISE 4 Examine an Incorrect User Association Login to ProjectWise Explorer (PWE) as Student Look at the Revit 2015 Program Association Open Associations Programs from the Tools Menu Select the + by Revit 2015 and then the + by Open to see the program groups Notice that there is more than one program association shown here, but there was only one open action when you were in PW Admin. This screenshot shows a user association. There are two types of program associations, Global and User. The global associations are setup from the ProjectWise Administrator. Any user can setup a user association to override the global association if it is wrong for that client. Unfortunately they can override the correct information with incorrect information. If Revit is not opening correctly, remove any user associations and see that resolves the issue. Remove the user association. Change the association view to User Select the User Association Right Click Select Unassociate There are times when you may have to add a user association to get Revit to open correctly. P r o j e c t W i s e F o r t h e R e v i t U s e r - W o r k s h o p Page 13

Best Practice: Opening and Working in an Existing Revit File EXERCISE 5 Open a Revit File Open Revit 2015 by double clicking the desktop icon. Select Try to accept the temporary license.
