TECHNICAL INFORMATION CUTTING RING COUPLING DESCRIPTION The purpose of cutting rings is to assure a firm bond between the tube and the coupling. This safe and reliable assembly is obtained by a specific configuration of the ring. When the nut is being tightened, the ring meets with the internal coupling cone and is distorted, thereby cutting into the tube at A & B. This distortion goes on, until C meets with the tube which stops the ring from advancing further and also prevents the ring from cutting through the tube. This distortion along with the specially designed interior at the collar end D of the ring increases safety with regard to flexing stresses and also eliminates vibration from the cutting area. After the assembly is completed collar E should completely fill the space in front of the ring. Before tightening the nut After tightening the nut 25

TECHNICAL INFORMATION DIRECTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY OF TUBE NUT When assembling a tube nut and sleeve to tubing there are certain steps that need to be taken to insure that a good seal is achieved. Either a tube fitting body or pre-installation body can be used. The following steps illustrate how this process is completed. 1. Cut the pipe square, remove all internal and external burrs 2. Oil internal threading and cone thoroughly. 3. Thoroughly oil both ring and nut (do not grease). 4. Fit both ring and nut onto the pipe. Be careful not to fit the ring the wrong way. 5. Screw on the nut by hand until it touches. 6. Push the tube against the thrust of internal cone. 7. Screw on until the pipe cannot turn any more. Draw a mark on the nut to improve the convenience of checking the number of turns to be given. 9. Final clamping is achieved by tightening the nut! of a turn. Thus, the ring is sunk into the pipe wall. 11. After loosening, the final tightening of the nut should not require excessive pressure. 8. Give the nut a! turn, the ring clamps the pipe (the pipe must not rotate). 10. Next, loosen the nut and check the upset flange fills the whole cutting face of the ring. Otherwise, tighten a bit more. It does not matter if the ring rotates on the pipe. The straight portion of the pipe must be 2 times the height H of the nut as a minimum. 26

TECHNICAL INFORMATION DIRECTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY WITH A REINFORCING RING The thickness of a tube wall depends upon: 1. The pressure of the conveyed fluid. 2. External mechanical stresses 3. The type of coupling In some low pressure applications, a thin wall tubing can be used. However, thin wall tubing lacks the necessary resistance to collapsing when the cutting ring is being crimped on. For this reason it is recoended to use a reinforcing ring. They are fully compatible with the tubing being used in both material and size. Their configuration is designed to allow easy installation by lightly tapping the grooved end with a haer. The end which is grooved prevents the rotating, sliding or detaching of the ring from the tube. For copper tubing a brass ring is recoended where as with steel tubing a steel ring is needed. When ordering reinforcing rings please specify: 1. The tube O.D. and wall thickness. 2. Material of the tubing. 3. Type of fluid being conveyed. 1. AX reinforcing lining for thinwalled pipes. 2. Cut the pipe square, remove all internal and external burrs 3. Insert the lining into the pipe up to the grooved edge. 4. Using a haer, tap the grooved section into the pipe. 5. When in final position the lining is flush with the pipe edge. 6. Fit the ring on the pipe provided with its lining. There is no pipe distortion. 27

TECHNICAL INFORMATION Identifying s Using the thread identification kit from Malone Specialty, Inc. or a coercially available caliper, thread gauge and thread pitch gauge, you will be able to identify the following thread forms. American Dry-Seal Pipe s SAE J476a NPT NPSM American National Screw s SAE J475a JIC British Pipe Parallel s ISO/BS 2779-NF EO3-005 DIN 3852 pg. 2 (Parallel s) British Pipe Taper s BS21-IS07 DIN 3852 (Taper s) Metric Parallel s ISO 6149 DIN 3852 Metric Taper s DIN 3852 Japanese Industrial Standard JIS BO202 (PF s) BO203 Tapered (PT ) How to use the Caliper The calipers in the kit can be used to help you identify both American and Foreign thread forms, including internal and external threads. The top scale is used to identify all inch threads and the bottom scale is used to identify all metric threads. When using the scale to correctly determine your thread size, use the first, or left, line in the window area. See Figure below for clarification. To identify external or male threads, use the bottom jaw of the caliper and to identify internal, or female threads use the top jaws of the caliper. See Figure above for clarification. 33

TECHNICAL INFORMATION How to use the Pitch Gauges All thread pitch gauges in the kit are used the same way in identifying internal or external threads. Each leaf has a number on it telling you how many threads per inch you have. The only exception to this is on the metric gauge. On the metric gauge, the number on each leaf represents the thread pitch (distance from the crest of one thread to the crest of the next thread) in millimeters. Figure below shows you the proper use of the thread gauge. One important point illustrated above is the use of the correct thread pitch gauge on the threads. Incorrect thread identification can cause: equipment failure, leaking connections, thread damage to mating parts, or possible human injury. Additional thread identification is explained throughout this catalog. General Information In identifying fittings, you should always be sure to identify both sides of the fitting. Except for plugs, caps and unions, all fittings grip a rigid tube or a hose and are screwed into some type of port. Try to divide each fitting into two separate identifying sections side A (grip tube or hose) and side B (the port thread). Identifying the Port side of Fittings (Side B) There are six coon port threads on fittings. They are as follows: 1) British Parallel Pipe s 2) British Taper Pipe s 3) Metric s, Parallel 4) Metric s, Taper 5) NPT (National Pipe ) 6) SAE Straight s 34

TECHNICAL INFORMATION Parallel s Vs. Tapered s To identify any port side thread, first determine if the thread is tapered or parallel by inspection and/or the use of a straight edge. A parallel thread will have some means of sealing at the top of the thread, either by O-Ring, metal seal, or possibly by a machined ring in the hex itself. A taper thread seals on the threads themselves by wedging into the female port and sealing by thread contact. American Tapered Pipe s There are various American Pipe series in use today. Two of the more popular thread forms used are the Dryseal American Standard Taper Pipe (NPTF) and American Standard Straight Pipe for Mechanical Joints (NPSM). Unlike the British threads, our pipe threads have a 60º thread flank angle. See Figure below. (Refer to Chart #3, page 42 for additional information.) 35

TECHNICAL INFORMATION British Forms Two of the more popular thread forms used in the world today are the British Standard Pipe Tapered BSPT and the British Standard Parallel Pipe. Both of these thread forms have a 55º thread flank angle. See Figure below. The BSPT or cannot be interchanged with our own pipe threads due to the difference in thread flank angle. The British thread forms use sizes similar to our own pipe threads 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, etc. First, determine if the thread is tapered or parallel, then measure it with the thread gauges supplied in you ID Kit under British thread forms. All BSPT and sizes can be compared with our own NPT for sizing. (A 1/4 BSPT or thread, if held end to end with a 1/4 NPT will have approximately the same thread O.D.) Refer to Chart #2, page 42 for additional information. BSPT Japanese s The Japanese Industrial Standard (J.I.S.) tapered and parallel threads are the same as the British Standard Pipe Tapered and British Standard Parallel Pipe threads. In addition to normal hose fittings, there are also flare fittings with a 30º or 45º flare in combination with either metric or threads that meet the J.I.S. standard. These are coonly called Komatsu and Mitsubishi fittings. Metric s Another port thread form found on overseas equipment is the true metric thread. This thread form is probably the easiest to measure and identify. First, determine if your thread is tapered or parallel by the same methods employed under the British s Forms Instructions. If you believe you have a metric parallel thread, you can measure it as follows: First, measure the outer diameter of the thread in millimeters as shown in the following diagram using your calipers. (nd = 24). Next, use your metric thread gauges to measure the distance from the crest of one thread to the crest of the next in millimeters. (P). This thread has 1.5 millimeters between threads. Combine the O.D. of the thread measurement with this second measurement to form a metric thread callout (i.e. M24 X 1.5) To measure metric taper threads, follow the same instructions as for the metric parallel thread. Since it will be difficult to measure the O.D. of a tapered thread, measure the O.D. at the third thread from the end. Then use your metric thread gauges as before. The thread callout will be M24 X 1.5 tapered. Information on additional thread identification is shown in Chart #1, page 41. 36

TECHNICAL INFORMATION Identifying the (Side A) Side The end of the fitting that grips a tube must be studied carefully for correct sizing. The first and most obvious indication is to measure the tube that is being gripped. Place you caliper across the diameter of the tube and read from the millimeter scale on your caliper. The following sizes are the most popular metric O.D. tube sizes in millimeters : 4 15 28 6 16 30 8 18 32 10 20 35 12 22 38 14 25 42 The 24º Cone Probably the single most popular bite-type fitting in Europe is the 24º cone. An EO style fitting and SAE flareless incorporates a 24º tapered throat angle and the nut drives the ferrule into the tube as it is tightened during assembly. There are various forms of ferrules that are used, but the bodies and nuts are all made to standards insuring the interchangeability between manufacturers. In metric sizes, the 24º fitting is made in six different series, AL series and LL series for low pressure, L series for medium pressure service, S series for high pressure severe-service application, A series for French metric and AG series for GAZ. To identify metric 24º fittings, first examine the markings on the tube nut itself. Most reputable manufacturers of metric 24º fittings mark the size tube and the series on the nose of the nut itself. Here you see coon nut markings for 24º metric bite-type fittings. L Series S Series 6-L 6-S 8-L 8-S 10-L 10-S 12-L 12-S 15-L 14-S 18-L 16-S 22-L 20-S 28-L 25-S 35-L 30-S 42-L 38-S A, AG and AL series nuts do not have any markings on the face of the nut. Chart #1 page 41 shows the coon threads for the tube side of standard 24º metric bite-type fittings. They are all metric parallel threads. Refer to Chart #4 page 42 for additional thread information on the SAE 24º flareless thread. 37

TECHNICAL INFORMATION 24º Bite-Type fittings Measuring the Side Connections The cross section in Figure below represents one end of a flareless tube connection without the nut and sleeve. The thread size can easily be identified by measuring the dimensions as shown on page 36 and the connection tube size can easily be identified by measuring dimension na in the figure below. Information on additional thread identification is shown in Chart #1 page 41. 37º Flare Fittings JIC 37º The 37º flared fitting functions by establishing one circular line contact between the nose of the fitting and the flare of the tube or female seat in a hose fitting. The function of the threads is to hold the two mating threads mechanically in place. JIC 37º couplings are generally used with higher pressure industrial and mobile applications. Information on additional thread identification is shown in Chart #5 page 42. SAE 45º Flared Fittings Sealing characteristics and thread identification is the same as the JIC 37º flared fittings. SAE 45º couplings are generally used in automotive low pressure systems. Information on additional thread identification is shown in Chart #8 page 43.
