Graduate Courses All courses are three credits unless otherwise stated. 3 college credits equal 67.5 PDPs. The Center, in partnership with the offices of Continuing Education at Framingham and Worcester State Universities, offers elective courses designed for students with baccalaureate degrees and appropriate teaching credentials. These courses are graduate level, developed primarily for professional advancement. They are not part of any degree program. Seek approval of appropriate district or college officials before enrolling in these courses to satisfy any degree, state credential, or local school district requirement. Withdrawal Policy: Full refund prior to first class; 80% after first class; no refund thereafter. This policy is consistent with Worcester and Framingham State universities. Withdrawals must be in writing, mailed, emailed or faxed to French River. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a grade of F. Attendance: 100% attendance is expected. Participants cannot receive a grade of A if absent for 6 hours. Participants must consult with instructors to make up for any loss of time in class. One approach to achieve the requirements of the law is to retrofit, meaning teachers solve problems after the fact in an attempt to fit a student into the existing framework. An alternative approach is universal design, meaning that the differentiated materials, methods, and assessment alternatives are considered and created in advance with the full range of students differences in mind. This course will show participants how to shift from retrofit to universal design for student diversity and curriculum access. Preliminary License Candidates: Teaching Reading, Math, and English/Language Arts to Students of All Ability Levels in the Elementary School and Including Special Needs Students A forty (40) hour seminar series for those seeking a preliminary license in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, or Moderate Disabilities. ATTENTION..If you are pursuing a preliminary license in any of the above referenced licensure fields, please be advised that, in addition to possessing a Bachelor s degree, a passing score on the MTELs and appropriate subject matter tests, the Regulations for Educator Licensure (603 CMR 7.04) also require teacher candidates to complete a seminar series on the teaching of Reading (10 hours), Math (10 hours), English/Language Arts (10 hours), and Inclusion (10 hours) unless you have already had any of these as undergraduate courses. (Note: moderate disabilities candidates need not take Including Special Needs Students )) French River has a program, which is approved by the Department of Education and designed to satisfy this requirement. The following is from the DESE s MA Sheltered English Instruction Teacher Endorsement Course The purpose of SEI Endorsement courses is to prepare the Commonwealth s teachers with the knowledge and skills to effectively shelter their content instruction so that our growing population of English language learners (ELLs) can access curriculum, achieve academic success, and contribute their multilingual and multicultural resources as participants and future leaders in the 21st century global economy. These courses have three (3) overarching goals: 1. To help teachers effectively carry out their responsibility for teaching and learning of ELLs as well as to understand the social and cultural issues that contribute to, and, impact the schooling of ELLs. 2. To expand teachers knowledge of how language functions within academic content teaching and learning, and how children and adolescents acquire a second language. 3. To provide teachers with practical research-based protocols, methods, and strategies to integrate subject-area content, language and literacy development---per the expectations of the MA English Language Development (ELD) World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) standards and thus to support ELL students success with the 2011 MA Curriculum Frameworks for English Arts and Literacy and Mathematics and other MA content standards.
