PRDV 75017 Including Special Needs Students in the Classroom July 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Oxford High School Instructor: Susan Brown 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Main Street (3 graduate credits Framingham State University) This course is open to all K-12 teachers Tuition: $650 for member-district teachers $750 for non-member district teachers NOTE: $1050 for Professional Licensure Moderate Disabilities Candidates (Required Course) The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides the foundation for inclusive schooling, requiring that every child with a disability receive a free and appropriate education and learn in the least restrictive environment. One approach to achieve the requirements of the law is to retrofit, meaning teachers solve problems after the fact in an attempt to fit a student into the existing framework. An alternative approach is universal design, meaning that the differentiated materials, methods, and assessment alternatives are considered and created in advance with the full range of students differences in mind. This course will show participants how to shift from retrofit to universal design for student diversity and curriculum access. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: June 19, 2015 To register for this course, please use the registration form on the cover page of this flier. Please specify if you are a teacher in a member district; a teacher in a non-member district; or a candidate for professional licensure in moderate disabilities (required course). What does this mean for you? Completing this program means that you don t have to enroll in or complete a Masters program to earn Professional Licensure---unless you want to do so---and you don t have to be concerned about changes in the licensure regulations, which are imminent. When you compare time and cost, most teachers will pay less than $2,900 (moderate disabilities teachers will pay less than $3,900) to earn their professional license through French River. The following is from the DESE s MA Sheltered English Instruction Teacher Endorsement Course The purpose of SEI Endorsement courses is to prepare the Commonwealth s teachers with the knowledge and skills to effectively shelter their content instruction so that our growing population of English language learners (ELLs) can access curriculum, achieve academic success, and contribute their multilingual and multicultural resources as participants and future leaders in the 21st century global economy. These courses have three (3) overarching goals: 1. To help teachers effectively carry out their responsibility for teaching and learning of ELLs as well as to understand the social and cultural issues that contribute to, and, impact the schooling of ELLs. 2. To expand teachers knowledge of how language functions within academic content teaching and learning, and how children and adolescents acquire a second language. 3. To provide teachers with practical research-based protocols, methods, and strategies to integrate subject-area content, language and literacy development---per the expectations of the MA English Language Development (ELD) World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) standards and thus to support ELL students success with the 2011 MA Curriculum Frameworks for English Arts and Literacy and Mathematics and other MA content standards.
