SAJH SPECIFICATION FOR MILD STEEL PIPES 1.0 General 1.1 The specification is applicable to Mild Steel pipes for water supply systems and shall conform to BS 534:1990 and BS 3601:1987. 1.2 These specifications will provide necessary information on the product dimension and requirements for the supply of pipes. 1.3 For flange, refer to BS 4504 Section 3.1 1989 PN 16. 2.0 Material 2.1 The steel used shall be made from carbon steel plate to BS 3601:1987. 2.2 The steel shall show on ladle analysis the composition as given in Table 2 of BS 3601:1987 for the steel grade specified. 2.3 Product analysis is required for each batch produced and shall be part of document during delivery. The permitted deviations for such analysis will be as in Table 3 of BS 3601:1987. 3.0 Process of Manufacture 3.1 The tubes shall be manufactured by either longitudinal welding internally and externally or, spiral seam formed around the circumference of the pipe. 3.2 Method of welding will be either by: 3.2.1 Electric Resistance Weld (ERW) of Steel Grade 430 manufactured from hot or cold flat rolled strip, longitudinally welded continuously by the passage of an electric current across the abutting edges or along the edges; or 3.2.2 Submerged Arc Weld (SAW) of Steel Grade 430 manufactured from plate, sheet or strip with either single or double longitudinal seam or spiral seam and welded across the abutting edges by an automatic submerged arc welding process using at least two runs, one of which shall be on the inside of the tubes. The tubes shall be welded, hot finished or cold finished. 3

3.3 Repairs to weld seam is allowed and the manufacturer shall have the option of using Ultrasonic or other suitable non destructive testing method of the weld areas or at least 10% of each diameter and thickness manufactured at a place chosen by the manufacturer. 3.4 Concession will be given for pipes made with 6 mm or less thick plates to be longitudinally welded with one deep penetration weld form the external face only but this concession will be immediately withdrawn if evidence shows that penetration was incomplete. 3.5 The weld metal shall have a smooth finish and shall not stand more than 1.5 mm above of the pipe shell internally or externally. 3.6 The weld metal on the external surfaces of the ends of all plain ended pipes shall be machined flush with the external surfaces of the pipes shell for a sufficient distance of facilitate jointing with couplings. 4.0 Thickness And Diameter 4.1 Thickness of steel pipe shells and the finished internal diameter of the pipes shall be as Table A on page 7. 4.2 The outside diameter of pipes shall be within a tolerance of ± 1%, except for pipe ends and sized pipes which shall be truly circular within a tolerance ± 1.6 mm. 5.0 Lengths 5.1 Standard length for straight pipes of nominal diameters 450 mm and above shall be 9 mm and standard length for straight pipe of nominal diameters less than 450 mm shall be 6 meters. 5.2 The maximum variation in length from the standard length shall be kept to the minimum possible within the normal method of manufacture. 6.0 Work Test 6.1 The contractor shall carry out hydraulic tests on all pipes before they are lines or coated or use for making specials. 6.2 The hydraulic test pressure shall be carried our in accordance with the requirements as specified in BS 3601. 4

6.3 As control for weld quality, the Supplier shall be required to submit radiographs of the 3% of all welds for the approval of the Superintending Officer. The Superintending Officer will advise the Contractor where requires the radiographs to be taken. The minimum lengths of weld to be radio graphed at any one location shall be 300 mm. The clearance and acceptance of these radiographs shall be in accordance with A.P.I. standard 1104. 6.4 Materials which show injurious defects at the place of manufacture or at site or which prove to be defective when applied in service shall be completely repaired by the Supplier at no extra cost. 6.5 Injurious defects shall include cracks, leaks, laminations, lack of complete penetration, lack of complete fusion, dents exceeding one eight of the specified wall thickness and undercutting or reduction in pipe wall thickness adjacent to a weld exceeding 0.8 mm in depth. 6.6 Slag inclusions and gas pockets or voids shall be considered to be minor imperfections and may be accepted if the maximum size and distribution do not exceed the limits shown in Tables 7.1 and 7.2 and Figures 7.2 and 7.3 of A.P.I standard 5LS 1969. 6.7 The pipe shall be tested prior to leaving the manufacturer s work and the Contractor shall produce the test certificates certifying that the pipes comply fully with the requirement of the Contract. 6.8 Where radiographic examination reveals defects in the welds, the Superintending Officer will either the length of pipe containing such defects or will permit the Contractor to carry out repairs and to submit radiographs of repairs for approval. 7.0 Surface Preparation 7.1 Priming 7.1.1 Immediately and not later than 15 minutes after each pipe or special has been cleaned to bare metal, a uniform thin coat of primer compatible with the coating materials to be used shall be cold applied by flooding coating, spraying or brushing complying to BS 4147 or BS 4164. 7.1.2 The primer shall be allowed to dry properly before the coating materials is applied but if more than 96 hours elapse before coating or if the primer become dead, powdery or crumbly, it shall be cleaned off and the pipe or specials shall be re primed. 5

8.0 Bitumen Enamel Wrapping 9.0 Coating 8.1 The pipes shall be covered with a layer of bitumen containing a mineral filler applied hot in accordance to BS4147 and inner wrapping of glass tissue and outer wrapping of bitumen impregnated reinforced glass tissue in the longitudinal direction with parallel glass threads spaced 9.5 mm apart. It shall be impregnated with a material fully compatible with the coating materials to give a finished thickness of 0.75 mm. 8.2 The glass tissue wrapping shall be wound spirally or circumferentially with an overlap. There shall be not less than 1 mm of enamel between the pipe surface and the inner wrapping. 9.1 Lined pipes shall be given one coat of water resistant white wash immediately following the bitumen coating. 9.2 The white wash shall be mixed as specified under section 2.5 of AWWA.C. 203-57. 10.0 Internal Lining 10.1 All steel pipes shall be lined internally to the thickness as specified with concrete made from ordinary Portland Cement and fine aggregate. 10.2 The materials used for lining, time method of lining and curing of the finishing lining shall comply with Clause 29 of BS 534:1990 and shall be carried out to the satisfaction of the Superintending Officer. 10.3 The pipe shall be charged in a single operation and spun at suitable speed to achieve a minimum rate of radial acceleration of 250 m/s² until the uniform thickness of concrete lining given in the table below has been attained over the whole of the inner surface with the exception of stop backs for jointing. 10.4 The finish surface of the lining shall be smooth and free from irregularities. 10.5 Curing records should provide to show that 21 days have elapsed since date of lining before delivery. 10.6 The manufacturing and testing of test cubes shall comply with Clause 29.5 of BS 534:1990. 7

11.0 Unwrapped Pipes 11.1 The internal lining shall be similar to the requirement of wrapped pipes. 11.2 The outer shall have two layers of primer coat of Red Lead Oxide and two layer of final coat of light green colour Zinc Chromate. 12.0 Pipe Ends 12.1 The weld metal on the external surfaces of the ends of all ended pipes shall be machined flush with external surfaces of the pipe shell for a sufficient distance to facilitate jointing with couplings or steel collars. 12.2 At the ends of all spigot and socket ended pipes the weld metal shall be similarly machined externally on the spigot end and internally on the socket end of the pipe. 12.3 The concrete lining and the external coating of the pipes to be jointed by welding shall be committed for sufficient distance from the ends to prevent damage to the protection during site welding. 12.4 The external coating of pipes to be jointed by mechanical couplings or flange adapters shall be omitted for a sufficient distance from the ends to permit assembly of the joints but the concrete lining shall extend to the end of the pipes or specials. 12.5 The unlined surfaces shall be protected with a suitable approved rust inhibitor or bitumen primer during manufacture so that extensive cleaning of the surface is not required after jointing on site. 13.0 Specials 13.1 Specials shall conform to the appropriate dimensions as Section 4 of BS 534:1990. Specials shall be formed from straight pipes butt-welded by metal arc process. 13.2 The coating and lining on the straight pipe shall be cut back from the points to welded or cut for sufficient distance to ensure that no material intended to remain part of the coating is damaged by the cutting or welding process. 13.3 Welding of specials shall be of standard equal to that of straight pipes and are subjected to a 100% radiographic test. 13.4 All fillet welds shall be subjected to air tests appropriate an/or magnetic crack detection test. 13.5 The outside diameter of specials shall conform to the outside diameter of the standard straight pipes. 13.6 The ends of pipe-ended specials shall be truly circular and shall conform to the tolerance required for fitting of mechanical couplings and flange adaptors. 8

14.0 Samples And Test on samples 14.1 The Contractor shall submit samples of such materials as may be required by the Superintending Officer and shall carry out of the specified tests directed by the Superintending Officer at the palace of manufacture or on the site or at a laboratory approved by the Superintending Officer. 14.2 Samples shall be submitted and tests carried our sufficiently early to enable further samples to be submitted and tested if required by the Superintending Officer. 14.3 The Contractor shall prepare the necessary test pieces and supply all labour, appliance, testing apparatus and everything necessary for the carrying out of all specified tests. 14.4 The cost of the samples and of conducting all the specified tests on the samples shall be deemed to include in the Contracts Rates. 14.5 The Contractor shall give the Superintending Officer fourteen days notice in writing of date on which any of the samples will be ready for testing or inspection at the place of manufacture or at an approved laboratory and unless the Superintending Officer shall attend at the appointed place within the said fourteen days the test may proceed in his absence. 14.6 Provided that the Contractor shall in any case submit to the Superintending Officer within seven days of every test three certified copies of the test readings. 14.7 Approval by the Superintending Officer as to the placing of orders for materials or as to samples or tests shall not prejudice any of the Superintending Officer s powers under the Contract nor relieve the Contractor of any of his obligations under the contract. 15.0 Test Certificates 15.1 Certificates in duplicate shall be provided by the Contractor for each complete pipe and special supplied giving the process of manufacture and the results of the specified tests. 15.2 Similar certificates in duplicate shall provided by the contractor in respect of materials to be used in the manufacture of the pipes giving the process of manufacture, chemical analysis (where relevant) and the results of the specified tests. 15.3 The material shall be suitably marked to enable it to be identified from references on the certificates. 9

16.0 Packing All pipe ends shall be packed and covered accordingly with suitable methods and material as to protect against damage. 17.0 Marking 17.1 All pipe supplied shall have the following marking on the outside of pipe: 17.1.1 Outside diameter (in mm) 17.1.2 The weight in Kilogram 17.1.3 Length of the pipe (in M) 17.1.4 SAJH lettering 17.1.5 Manufacturer s distinguishing mark and date of manufacture 17.1.6 Pipe Series / Batch Numb 18.0 Pre Delivery Inspection and Evaluation a) It is the responsibility of the tenderer to inform SAJH for inspection purposes during manufacturing and before delivery. b) SAJH reserve the right to inspect and witness the testing of product offered. c) At any time, when requested, the supplier is to provide SAJH a sample of the product offered for evaluation purposes. All costs shall be borne by the supplier. d) If at any time the supplier fails to deliver the required sample, the product is deemed fail to meet the specifications. 19.0 Certification a) Manufacturer of supplier are required to provide a copy of the certificate and testing report from SIRIM, IKRAM or other recognised certification body. b) Tests report required shall be those tests conducted within a year period. c) SAJH have the right to refuse offer or reject supply if the documents required are not enclosed. 10
