1 TESTING LABORATORY ROURKELA 1. Background: Keeping in view of the growing demand of quality of the products of the industries, Govt. has established Testing Laboratory, Rourkela, under the Directorate of export Promotion & Marketing, Industries Deptt. Govt. of Orissa, in the year The laboratory is functioning on its own land & building near Industrial estate, Rourkela facing ring road. The laboratory was established mainly to provide testing facilities to the ancillary and down stream industries of Rourkela steel plant and SSI units of western zone of Orissa. As this belt is full of ores and minerals, this laboratory has facilities for testing the ores & minerals & other metallurgical products. Besides SSI units the testing facilities of the laboratory is being utilised by Govt. organisations like R & B, PWD, National Highway, D G S & D and public sector undertakings like NALCO, MCL, OSHB, OWSSB, IOL etc. In addition to the above testing facilities of this laboratory are regularly utilised by private organisations like ORIND, IDL, L & T, OCL, Contractors, consultants and exporters. This laboratory undertakes testing of raw materials & finished products of SSI units for manufacture of quality products. Presently this laboratory has testing facilities for the following areas of testing: (i) Physical (ii) Chemical & Paints (iii) NDT & metallurgical (iv) Civil (v) Electrical 2. Objectives : To upgrade & modernize the existing testing facilities and quality system of the laboratory as per NABL guidelines & accord their accreditation which is the apex body in India, set up under Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India to grant credibility of Testing laboratory in the Country. To get accreditation of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), for providing testing facilities for BIS licensed products.

2 To provide testing facilities to the industries of this region at their doorstep. To provide testing facilities to the exporters of this region at their door step for exporting their products with single window testing facility. To provide testing facility for third party certification of stores inspected by Inspection Agencies in different purchasing organisation. To upgrade & modernise the existing testing machines & equipments, infrastructure, staff pattern and to procure latest test equipments and to fully computerise the Quality system of the laboratory for providing best possible test services. To promote quality of stores manufactured in the industries and to help in procurement of quality stores by Govt. Deptt. & other purchasing organisations. To promote quality awareness in the manufacturing sector as well as purchasing organisations.
