Breaking the Cycle of Generational Poverty
Generational poverty cannot be changed with small, softhearted plans. It must be directly addressed with great intention through mutual relationships. Richard Logan, Attack Poverty Founder Attack to begin to deal with a problem or task in a determined and vigorous way Poverty powerless, disenfranchised, lacking well-being and the resources to obtain well-being Our Vision Empowering people to attack poverty in their life and community. Our Mission To strengthen under-resourced communities through spiritual growth, education, revitalization and basic needs.
We are a GLOBAL organization that SERVES locally, adopting pockets of poverty and launching what we call Friends Initiatives. These initiatives are LONG-TERM commitments that require collaborative efforts with local organizations, churches, residents and stakeholders committed to community transformation. We use an ASSET-BASED approach that aims to build on the strengths and capacities of the community. Our work is HOLISTIC. We understand the connections between: a decent place to live, a living wage job, spiritual health, clean water, quality education, child care, healthy families, basic and financial literacy, transportation and access to health care for sustainability. The driving force behind all this is EMPOWERMENT. We are all about giving people tools to help themselves break out of the cycle of generational poverty. It s about DEVELOPMENT, not charity; DIGNITY, not shame. Believing all humans are created in the image of God, we will always promote the dignity and worth of people and families. Our initiatives include: CLEAN WATER projects, MENTORING & TUTORING, LITERACY, GED completion, soft-skills JOB TRAINING and HOME REPAIR. We currently have two Initiatives: friends of north richmond.
FRIENDS OF NORTH RICHMOND In just 2 short years, tens of thousands of hours have been given by nearly 1300 volunteers, and hundreds of thousands of dollars have been generously donated to invest in this community. We have tutored 1000 students, taught literacy to 75 adults, completed 54 home repairs and 3 community clean-up projects and we are just getting started! We are just now beginning to see the tremendous impact that Friends of North Richmond is making in the lives of people who need us. Our district has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to keep kids in school. The best thing we ve done at our school hasn t cost us a dime. We have Friends of North Richmond tutors come in every day, and now morale is up, grades are up, they are making a huge difference! Terrie Neinast, Principal of Juan Seguin Elementary
What North Richmond needs for the long term is leadership. When you came, God answered a prayer in North Richmond! -Troy Herron, North Richmond Resident for 39 years We need you here People come here to help the school with a great idea, then they realize, it s hard Instead of staying and seeing it to fruition they pick another more fun project. That longterm commitment has to happen. -Kirin Wells, Teacher You made me feel like family... You helped me get a job and get closer to God. -Tatwailla Kirk, North Richmond Resident Scan to hear these stories or go to: www.friendsofnorthrichmond.org/stories I wondered why would people care about me? Damian s Grandma I went from a 70 to a 98 in reading thanks to the help of my tutor, Miss Charlotte! Damian Jimenez Age 9 The last couple years have allowed us to grasp the depth of the challenges ahead. The problems this community has inherited began over 150 years ago, and will require a long-term commitment to ensure a permanent change. We re excited to be building a permanent space in North Richmond. This facility gives us a central location for our job skills training courses, after school program, marriage/family training and literacy classes. It will become a lighthouse of hope to many who will change the trajectory of their lives because of this growing initiative and the many partners that work together to serve this community. FRIENDS OF UGANDA Our community development initiative in Rushere, Uganda started with a church partnership through Africa Renewal Ministries, and the drilling of 3 bore holes providing CLEAN WATER with our partner Living Water International. Our current campaign involves helping Rushere Community Church buy land and build a building. When we are done working in Rushere we will have solved the water crisis for this entire community! When the people in Rushere see us struggling in such a way, having no land - they can t think that there is life in such a church. Pastor Gerald, Rushere Community Church Since we have received these 3 bore holes, life has changed for us. Disease is down, cholera is down, dysentery is down, crime is down, and more importantly they have created new jobs for the people of Rushere.
