1 Introduction 1.1 ECDS Environment Climate Data Sweden, ECDS, is a Swedish service facilitating the search, publication and long-term accessibility of data for research in the fields of environment and climate. ECDS is hosted by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). 1.2 The ECDS Data Storage ECDS has a storage area on SweStore, for users with limited resources and limited requirements on storage capacity. We have developed a web based application where authorized researches may get a subdirectory on the ECDS directory on SweStore and the possibility to manage their data, which means - Upload data to SweStore - Delete data on SweStore - Replace data on SweStore - Create subdirectories on SweStore - Delete subdirectories on SweStore The privileges are only for the subdirectory, which the researcher has been authorised to use. A virus scan is made on the data files before they are stored on SweStore. Metadata for data sets stored at SweStore (on ECDS directory) shall be published on ECDS Data Portal (see Ref. 1) 1.3 References 1. The term commonly refers to the attributes of computer data, though it may by definition refer to any information which describes other information. Geographical metadata includes information about What-Where-When-Who-How. A nationally accessible storage facility built as a robust, flexible and expandable system. The system is intended as a versatile long-term storage system and is available for the Swedish research community. ECDS has a storage area at SweStore where we can offer storage for datasets from users. ECDS Data Portal and ECDS Storage share the same entrance after You have clicked the button Publish. Select Store dataset. 2.1 Get a username A username is required in order to store data. It is the same user name, which is used by ECDS Data Portal. The following information is shown on the Publish-page: Fill in the username and password. If you have forgotten your username (userid) but remember the mail address you used, the system can send you the username. If you know the username but have forgotten your password the system can give you the possibility to create a new password. If you don t have a username then click on Register. The following page then appears: Sida 4(6)
Mandatory elements are Given name, Surname and E-mail but we suggest you also include Organisation and Telephone. The rather strange text at the bottom (called a Captcha ) is used to ensure that the attempt to create a username is generated by a person. 2.2 Log in Always when You handle Your data on SweStore You need to log in. Our application is prepared for single sign-on. This means that You shall not need to login twice once when You work with data on Swestore and once when You works with metadata on our data portal. However GeoNetworks is not ready yet for single sign-on. This means You may login once at ECDS data portal and once at ECDS Storage. For internal users however You do not need to login twice under some circumstances. As soon as GeoNetworks is ready then single sign on will work. Sida 5(6)
2.3 Request catalogue After You have received a username You may request a catalogue (subdirectory) on the ECDS storage on SweStore. Fill in the form described below Your request is sent to ECDS Helpdesk. You will have a mail telling that Your request has been approved or if it has been disapproved then You will be contacted. When it is approved and Your catalogue has been created You can start working with Your dataset. 2.4 Manage dataset The available commands are - Delete you may delete files or empty subdirectories - Create You may create subdirectories - Upload You may upload individual files from your computer 4 Future functionality The functionality is rather basic upload and delete. Additional functionality may be added depending on the response from the research community. Sida 6(6)
