Programme objectives: By the end of the course, participants will: have developed self-awareness and insight into their approach to medical leadership. be motivated and engaged in the medical leadership agenda. have a greater understanding of the realities of medical leadership and the competencies required for success. have created action plans to prepare them for future leadership opportunities. Stage one: pre-course work i) Participants reflect and make note of: a significant leadership experience, formal or informal. their own current approach to leadership, with examples. their leadership aspirations between now and their final year of training. This is to help participants clarify their thoughts concerning leadership and to begin the process of their own leadership development. Ii) Participants complete the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. This is a personality psychometric, designed to increase self-awareness and insight into the needs of others. iii) Participants collect multi source feedback (MSF) from colleagues at work, in order to further develop self-awareness and create focused learning objectives. iv) Participants read and reflect on the Medical Leadership Competency Framework and consider its application to their work.
Stage two: A two day course. Day One 0900 Introductions. Who people are, introduction to the course structure and the learning outcomes. Positioning the pre course work. Participants are asked to share their learning objectives. 0945 Exploring leadership and team working. Experiential group exercise, designed to help participants get to know each other, create a learning group and to begin the process of exploring leadership. Group review focusing on leader qualities and effective team working. Compare/discuss two theories of leadership with the day to day realities of medical leadership with reference to the Medical Leadership Competency Framework. 1115 Break 1130 Developing self-awareness using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. What it is. How it works. Explanation of MBTI scales and personality types. The MBTI with reference to leadership and teamworking. Answering the questions - where do people need to develop? How can I get the best from others. How will this help my leadership? 1300 Lunch 1345 Leading a team to get things done. Experiential exercise to explore how to balance the needs of achieving task success, build the team, and maximise the motivation and performance of individuals when working on a task together. Review focusing on how to get the best from team members. 1500 Break
1515 The evolving national and local structure of the NHS system A presentation on the structure of the NHS system and how it is evolving. Input and discussion on the medical leadership role within this structure. 1645 Beginning a self development plan. Working in Buddy learning pairs. Participants interactively share their pre-course work and their new insights from today s sessions to begin their self development action plan. 1700 Close
Day Two 0900 Review of day one. Participants reflect and share the learning from day one. Reinforcing buddy learning pairs as a means to gain on-going support following the course. An opportunity to ask questions of clarification and set new learning goals. 0930 Leadership and team working in action. Multi-group experiential exercise to help participants explore leadership and teamworking in a practical way. A review to reflect on the leader s style, how this was effective, and how this learning can be applied in their workplace. Each participant noting their personal learning, and sharing in their buddy learning pair. 1100 Break 1115 Leadership styles A facilitator-led presentation on two approaches to choosing a leadership style. Group and plenary discussion to consider the implications of each style in medical leadership settings. How would the different styles have added value to the leadership situations that participants reflected on in the pre-course work? 1230 Applying the learning. Using the learning from the morning to make a positive difference at work. 1300 Lunch 1345 Motivating the team, and troubleshooting strategies Presentation on research and approaches that can help medical leaders motivate and inspire others. Discussion on how this can be applied in situations of conflict or difficult behaviour. Small group reflection on how to apply this in current or future situations.
1415 Leadership and managing performance. Experiential exercise focusing on achievement of a task which requires each team member to plan ahead and contribute whilst working with tight time deadlines. Review and discussion on leading and motivating a team to achieve results under challenging conditions. 1530 Break 1545 Review Review of learning from experiential exercise. 1615 Applying the leadership learning Participants working in buddy learning pairs to discuss their learning from the two days and finalise their self development action plan, answering the questions: what is distinctive about my own approach to leadership? what are my leadership strengths/assets? what are my leadership development areas? What do I want others (colleagues (medical and nonmedical/trainees/consultants/patients) to be saying about my leadership when I am in a substantive post? What does this mean I will need to do, say, and think after this course? Making agreements for post course learning support. 1650 Evaluation and closing comments 1700 Close of programme
