~ HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA ~ Transfer High Schools Transfer Schools are very good options for youth who are over-age and under-credited. They are small, academically rigorous, full-time high schools designed to re-engage students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school. The essential elements of transfer schools include: a personalized learning environment, rigorous academic standards, student-centered pedagogy, support to meet instructional and developmental goals, and a focus on connections to college. Each transfer school determines admissions criteria individually. Detailed information can be found below. For admissions criteria and application processing, call the schools. Students, parents and guidance counselors can contact transfer schools directly to set up an intake interview or to learn more about the school. * New transfer school in 2008-09 School Name Bronx Academy HS Bronx Community HS Bronx Haven HS Bronx Regional HS City As School Crotona Academy Jill Chaifetz Transfer School P.U.L.S.E. Regular NYC Public High Schools If you are starting the high school admissions process from the beginning (after junior high school), you should first get a copy of the Directory of the New York City Public High Schools. These are available to all NYC middle school students, and OCFS has copies in all of its facilities as well as its Community Multi-Service Offices (CMSO). This directory provides detailed descriptions of nearly 400 New York City public high schools, including information about programs, extracurricular activities, special education services and eligibility. It is also available online at http://schools.nyc.gov/choicesenrollment/high/publications/default.htm Every eligible student is assured entrance into one of the New York City public high schools. To file an application, a student must be a resident of New York City and meet eighth or ninth grade promotional standards. In order to get the most out of the high school admissions process, students should work with their parents and counselors to research their options and apply to the programs of greatest interest to them. Students can rank up to 12 schools/programs on their application. If a student wishes to attend his or her zoned high school, he or she must list the zoned programs of that high school as one of the choices on his or her application. All students must submit their high school applications by the deadline. There are three rounds in the high school admissions process: Specialized Admissions Round Students who wish to attend one of the Specialized High Schools must take the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test or audition for Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School to be eligible for admission. Offers for Specialized High Schools are sent to students in February. Students who receive an offer are also notified if they were matched to one of the programs they listed on their application, and they can choose which offer to accept. If a student opts not to accept an offer to a Specialized High School, he/she forfeits the seat and will not have a place in a Specialized High School. Students who do not receive an offer are automatically entered into the main round. Main Round This round is for all students including those who did not receive an offer to a specialized high school. Students will be notified about the program to which they have been matched. Supplementary Round If a student does not receive a match in the main round, he/she has another opportunity to select up to 12 new choices during the supplementary round. The process works in the same manner as the main round in that it tries to match every applicant into his/her highest ranked school/program that also ranked them. Students who are not matched to one of their choices will be assigned to an available high school as near as possible to their homes. All students receive a high school match by the end of the supplementary round. To learn more, read the online publication Choosing A High School: Information for Middle School Students. This book gives suggestions as to how to narrow down schools to make a good match and how to read the High School Directory. It also discusses the difference between types of NYC public high schools, sample application materials, suggestions for parents, and more. http://schools.nyc.gov/nr/rdonlyres/6f8935e5-29c0-403f-bb40- A5B9BD8BD1AF/0/ChoosingaHighSchool2008_Englishweb.pdf For more information about the NYC public high schools and the high school admissions process, visit http://schools.nyc.gov/choicesenrollment/high/default.htm 19

~ GED TO COLLEGE PROGRAMS ~ CUNY Prep CUNY Prep is a full-time college preparatory high school program that operates from 9 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program is credit-granting and operates year round. Most students stay with the program for a minimum of six months and a maximum of a year. The focus is on college and college readiness, not the GED exam. All students are expected to have a serious interest in, and commitment to, attending college upon graduating. Students take classes in Humanities, Science, Mathematics, College Survival, Writing, Health/PE, and electives such as computers, media literacy. Special interest clubs are available. Classes are 70 minutes long and students are provided with breakfast and a hot lunch. The aim of the program is to provide our students with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to: Apply and be accepted to college Pass the GED test with a high score Set and accomplish academic and personal goals All students who graduate from the program receive follow-up services, such as support from our staff, alumni meetings, and assistance with college life. The school partners with college campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY) to ensure a smooth transition for those students who choose to attend a college in the CUNY system. http://www.cunyprep.net/ CUNY Catch (College Alliance for Transitional Career Help) CUNY Catch is a transitional program, initiated by LaGuardia Community College, to serve adolescents at risk who are attending high school and preparing for release to their home communities. This alliance of LaGuardia, Bronx Community College, and Medgar Evers College has developed a model for transitional services that is recognized nationally for its strong case management approach, and emulated by both New York City Department of Correction and New York State Education Department. From its inception in 1991, CUNY Catch has operated in both detention and sentencing facilities in New York City. The program combines the collaborative efforts and resources of City University of New York and the Department of Education, and has the assured cooperation of the Department of Correction, and additional agency support of the NYC Office of Criminal Justice. The target population is the adolescent inmate, as well as the youngster on probation or simply at risk. The program provides outreach and career counseling on Rikers (at eleven facilities), and post-release aftercare at three CUNY campuses. Along with the integration of learning and work, family participation, and general health issues and referrals, the program emphasis is on entry to academic and vocational training, career development and preparation for entry into the labor market. http://ace.laguardia.edu/catch/ 33
~ PRE-GED PROGRAMS ~ Community Education Pathways for Success Program (CEPS) The Youth Development Institute (YDI) developed the Community Education Pathways for Success Program (CEPS) in 2005. The program enables young adults (16-24 year olds) who have left school without a diploma to return to school, complete their GED, and prepare for and enter college and/or the workforce. The CEPS program works with youth who read at the 4-7 th grade level and are therefore ineligible for a GED program. This is a pre-ged program that combines a youth development approach for the education, social support, and career development of this population. The City University of New York s commitment to the education of all New Yorkers begins long before the start of freshman year. Through its Collaborative Programs, CUNY invests substantial human and financial resources in the service of public school students and out-of-school youth. The work CUNY does with the NYC public schools through the Office of Academic Affairs is known collectively as Collaborative Programs. Currently, Collaborative Programs include CUNY-sponsored or affiliated schools; programs with pre-college and college courses and activities, academic advising and support services; and arts projects. The Office of Academic Affairs manages these efforts in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and other organizations. CUNY was also recently selected by the Department of Education to be one of the new Partnership Support Organizations. http://web.cuny.edu/academics/cunypublicschoolprograms.html College Now is CUNY s largest collaborative program, enlisting all 17 colleges and nearly 300 NYC public high schools in its mission to help prepare students for high school graduation and success in college. The program provides a variety of no-cost opportunities, including collegecredit courses, college-preparatory courses and activities, experiential-based summer programs, and access to campus facilities and cultural offerings. A New York City public high school collaborates with one or more of the 17 City University of New York (CUNY) colleges to create a College Now partnership. The program then offers eligible students a number of ways to improve their high school performance and get a jumpstart on college. College Now offers many activities and opportunities: academic courses (both for high school and college credit) campus-based tours and cultural events, such as theater or dance performances exclusive scholarship offers To take college credit courses students must qualify, usually with a 75 on the English and/or Math Regents exams. These courses are therefore taken mostly by 11 th and 12 th graders. Precollege courses do not require Regents exams and focus on preparing students for college-level work. More information can be found at our web site: www.collegenow.cuny.edu 45
Middle Grades Initiative/GEAR UP is designed to support public school students' academic work and college awareness, beginning in the middle grades so they will be prepared for high school, College Now opportunities, and, eventually, success in postsecondary education. The program provides multi-year support services through school-based tutoring, advising and counseling, and early college awareness and arts education programs. In MGI/Gear Up, students are followed from middle school through high school and schools are partnered with a CUNY college. Requirements/Accessibility: At this time, MGI/Gear Up is not enrolling new 6 th and 7 th graders. However, if a student transfers into a classroom where a current cohort exists, they will be incorporated into the program. The Early College Initiative works with the Department of Education to re-design the secondary school experience. Students enter early college schools of which there are currently 10 in the 6th or 9th grade, study with a mix of high school and college faculty, and have the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree (or two years of transferable credit) upon graduation. Early College Schools are based on the belief that all students deserve a high-quality education that adequately prepares them for college-level work. There are no admission exams and students of all abilities are encouraged to apply. The selection process is designed to create a student body that reflects the neighborhood in which the school is located. Early College Schools are small in size no more than 575 students at capacity accept students from all backgrounds and ability levels enable students to graduate from high school with up to two years of college credit provide support to students by making use of after school and summer instruction use college facilities and resources Locations Enrollment: Most Early College schools admit students at the 6 th or 9 th grade level and students must meet other application requirements for admission. More information can be found on our web site: http://earlycollege.cuny.edu 47
CUNY Affiliated Schools span all levels from pre-k to 12th grade. College faculty members frequently work with their counterparts at these schools on matters of professional development, curriculum alignment, and placement of student teachers. Eleventh- and twelfth-grade students in many of these schools have the same opportunity as College Now students to enroll in college-credit courses. The Affiliated Schools Program of The City University of New York provides college-sponsored educational activities for New York City public school students By helping develop and deepen professional connections between college and school educators, the Affiliated Schools reflect the advantages of sustained, crossinstitutional attention to post-secondary preparation. The school culture fosters resilience, reflection, and success in both principle and practice. Grade Level: GED, between the ages of 16 and 18, evening program for students age 19 or older. Enrollment: To be considered for admission, students must be 16-18 years old, out of school for two months (or have a long-term absence designation), and have at least an eighth grade reading level. College Terms 101 There are many unique terms that colleges and universities can use to describe important processes. This is a list of commonly used terms and their definitions. Application Options Early Decision Some colleges offer students the option to apply to his/her first choice early. If a student is accepted for an early decision deadline, the student agrees by contract to enter that college and to withdraw all other applications from other colleges. Early decision deadlines are generally in November with a decision mailed to the applicant in December. This is generally best for students who have very strong grades and are very likely to be accepted into the school to which they are applying. If you are interested in applying for early decision, please make sure to read the early decision policy for individual schools. Early Action This is also an application system that allows students to apply to their schools extremely early within the school year. If a student is accepted for an early action deadline, the student is still able to apply to other schools and generally has until the spring to make his/her final decision. If you are interested in applying for early action, please make sure to read the early action policy for individual schools. Rolling Admissions In this process, the admissions office will review an application as soon as possible after the applicant has completed his/her application. Decisions are generally mailed out within a few weeks after they are made. If applying to a rolling admissions process, students should ask about preferential dates and are encouraged to send their completed application earlier rather than later. If accepted for rolling admissions, there is no implied commitment on the part of the student to attend. Degree Options Associate s Degree These degrees are offered by 2- year schools. AA: Associate of Arts AS: Associate of Science AAS: Associate of Applied Science AFA: Associate of Fine Arts 65
College Terms 101 Continued Bachelor s Degree These degrees are earned in a specific subject area and offered by 4-year schools. Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG) This grant is given based on financial need with priority given to Pell Grant recipients. School Grants Individual colleges may offer grants to their students. The application requirements will depend on the guidelines set by the college, so be sure to ask about grant options when talking to financial aid representatives. Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is intended to help cover costs at New York Colleges. To apply for TAP, you must be a resident of New York State for twelve consecutive months prior to the term that you are applying for, and you must be eligible to attend a college in New York State. While in school the interest on the loan is paid by the federal government. Once you graduate or leave school, you have a 6 month grace period before you start to repay this loan. Financial Aid Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans The Federal Stafford Loan is a low-interest loan made to students who demonstrate financial need. The school determines loan eligibility and the loan may be made through a lender. While in school the loan may be subsidized, meaning that interest is paid by the government while the student is in school, or unsubsidized meaning that the student is responsible for the interest on the loan. Scholarships These are awarded on the basis of need and/or achievement. Schools or outside organizations can offer scholarships. Scholarships do not need to be repaid. Work-Study This is a type of financial aid package offers students who qualify, an opportunity to work on campus and be paid for their work. Standardized Tests ACT The American College Testing (ACT) Assessment is a testing alternative to the SAT. The ACT tests English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. Although SAT tests are required for entry into most colleges, many colleges accept the ACT as alternative criteria for admission. Be sure to ask colleges if they accept ACT scores. PSAT/NMSQT The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a two-hour exam testing verbal and mathematics questions. This test may be taken by sophomores or juniors, and if a junior scores exceptionally high he/she is considered for the National Merit Scholarships. The PSAT/NMSQT should be taken in preparation for the SAT and is given in the early fall. SAT The SAT tests critical reading, mathematics and writing skills. Calculators are permitted for the mathematics section. These scores are generally used as criteria for admission to college and also for placement into classes. The SAT can be taken multiple times and colleges will consider your highest scores when making their decision. Be sure to speak to your school counselor about fee waivers and also disability accommodations. 67
College Terms 101 Continued SAT Subject Test (SAT IIs) This test measures knowledge in specific subject areas and may be required for admission into specialized programs. Check with individual colleges regarding admission requirements. TOEFL Students whose native language is a language other than English and who have received low verbal scores on the PSAT or SAT should consider taking the TOEFL. Career Planning Resources Guide Glossary of Terms Continued Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals With Disabilities (VESID) VESID Adult Vocational Rehabilitation Services. VESID provides vocational counseling and rehabilitation services that result in successful employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities and their employers. Vocational Rehabilitation is a process that involves application for services, eligibility determination, vocational counseling, and the development of an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) to provide services leading to employment Once you contact VESID, you will be asked to attend a group orientation session. The orientation will provide you with a description of the types of services that VESID provides. All the necessary forms needed to apply for VESID services will be given to you at that time. You may take them home and return the completed forms at your convenience. VESID staff will be available to answer any questions that you may have. As soon as we receive the completed forms necessary for a VESID application and to determine eligibility for VESID services, an appointment will be arranged for you to see an eligibility counselor. Your counselor will talk to you about your disability and ways in which VESID services may help you become employed. During this meeting you may be asked for information about your background, including questions about your physical and/or emotional health. Information about how your disability affects your ability to work will help us decide if you are eligible for VESID services. With your permission, it may be necessary to obtain additional information from your doctor, hospital, school, or ask that you to go for evaluations (at our expense). Once we have all the information and you have met with our eligibility determination counselor, a decision about your eligibility for VESID services will be made within seven (7) business days. If you have been found eligible to receive VESID services, a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor will be assigned to work with you. http://www.vesid.nysed.gov/specialed/ and http://www.vesid.nysed.gov/specialed/publications/transitioni/students.htm Jeanne Bambino, Project Director Gayatri Choudhary, Transition Site Coordinator (212) 505-6390 Placement and Referral Center for Clients with Special Needs Room 223 145 Stanton Street New York, NY 10002 (212) 529-4083 (fax) jbambin4@schools.nyc.gov gchoudh@schools.nyc.gov 70
