2 Admission Requirements Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in Year Up! We provide ambitious urban high school graduates and GED recipients from low to moderate-income families, with an opportunity to pursue in demand training and earn college credits. After successful completion of the first 5 months, you will have an opportunity to spend 6 months working as an intern for a major corporation, in one of four career tracks: Information Technology, Quality Assurance, Project Management or Financial Operations preparing you for future jobs. During the Participants will also earn an educational stipend of up to $144/week during the first 5 months and $260/week during the internship phase. This packet explains what is required of you throughout the admissions process and how to contact us for additional help. A description of our required application materials are included below and a link to our online application form will be ed to you after attending an Open House. The sooner you can apply to the program the better to ensure you have ample time to progress through the steps required. We admit applicants on a rolling basis until we have reached capacity. Priority Deadline June 13, 2014 An evaluation funded by the federal government is being conducted to determine how Year Up helps people increase their skills and find jobs. There will be more applicants than spaces available in this program. Individuals who are eligible for the program and agree to participate in the study will be selected into the program based on a lottery. 3 Admissions Process and Materials The following steps must be completed after attending an Open House Session. Please read all instructions carefully and complete all forms and materials fully. Submit all application materials 1 2 All application materials become part of a permanent record, are the property of Year Up, and are not returnable. Your file will remain confidential Application Form submit online (will be ed once you have attended an Open House)) Identification and documentation of legal right to work in the U.S. - see page 5 Essay - A typed, 2-3 page, double spaced, 12 pt, personal statement/essay - see page 5 Creating a Personal Budget - see Page 6 Copy of High School Diploma or GED certificate - 1 Official High School Transcripts Official signed, sealed high school transcripts with graduation date - See Page 8 -OR- 1 official GED test score results - See Page 8 Recommendation Form & Additional References See Page 10 Signed Agreement to Take Part in ISIS Study- form provided during Open House **Please not that you may only cancel/reschedule an appointment once, and must call or in advance to reschedule. 3 4 Learning Assessment All qualified candidates who have attended an open house, submitted an online application and a signed agreement to take part in the ISIS study, will participate in a Learning Assessment in order to assess your technical, math, writing, reading, communication, and problem solving abilities. The assessment will be schedule immediately following the Open House session. Interviews- are scheduled for candidates who have successfully completed the Learning Assessment, submitted their online application, 2 page personal statement/essay, Budget and agreement to take part in ISIS study. Recommendations, references, transcripts High school Diplomas/GED Certificates can be submitted upon arrival at your interview if they are not available in time for the Learning Assessment. You are expected to arrive minutes prior to your interview time, and must be dressed professionally. Attend an ISIS workshop all applicants who are eligible to participate in Year Up will be required to attend an ISIS workshop where they will complete the research study surveys. The first workshop will be held towards the end of January. *** Notification of Next Steps Throughout the Admissions Process the Admissions Team will communicate with applicants via and phone. At each step of the admissions process, applicants will be notified within a reasonable time period if they have or have not qualified for the next step. *** Notification of Enrollment after an eligible applicant has completed an ISIS workshop they will receive notification via mail and/or phone informing them of the results of the lottery. Those selected for program participation will receive information on enrollment. Those selected to be a part of the non-program group will be provided with a list of alternative programs/resources. Walking Directions: We are located at 9 DeKalb Ave (marked by the letter A below) on the 5 th floor of the Chase bank building --a large white historic building adjacent to Junior s. The side entrance for Year Up is located on Fleet St, a few yards past a set of grey gates (marked by the big arrow below). Ring the buzzer to the left of the door, and someone will let you in. Your essay should be formatted as follows: 2-3 pages typed (no less than 2 pages), paragraph form, double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font. Your answer will be evaluated for content and your ability to communicate and express your thoughts clearly and concisely in essay format. Essay Question A. Briefly describe your experience and learning, including learning outside the classroom, such as employment, family, military, volunteer work, and participation in community organization. C. Tell us a little about yourself or your family what is your story. Explain your reasons for further study, and personal and career goals. D. In 3 paragraphs or more, summarize what you would want to accomplish during the 1 st month of the Learning and Development Phase, your 1 st three months of internship, 1 st month after graduation and six months after graduating from the Year Up program. 5

Year Up is a nonprofit organization that gives young adults the opportunity to learn technical and professional skills (first five months) and apply those skills in a professional setting through an internship with a corporate partner (last six months), while earning an educational stipend and a bi-weekly stipend. Candidates must show a tremendous amount of commitment, character, competency, and initiative throughout their oneyear commitment. Your observations of the applicant's character, leadership ability, academic skills, and aptitude will play a role in determining the applicant's suitability for this program.
