Food: school cafeteria, Chinese and western foods. Introduction of Hangzhou One of the seven ancient capitals of China, Hangzhou enjoys the reputation of Heaven on Earth. The history of Hangzhou traces back to the Liangzhu Culture of 5000 years ago. In the Wu- Yue period, as the economic and culture center, Hangzhou was a thriving scene. In 1138 AD, the Southern Song Dynasty made Hangzhou the capital, making it the contemporary political and cultural center of China. When Marco Polo the Italian adventure arrived in Hangzhou in the 13 th Century, he uttered Hangzhou is the most gorgeous city in the world. Course Description The entire course is designed around the water culture of Jiang Nan: the Southern water land of the Yangtze River, covering from Mei li Zhou, to Qiantang River, to the tea culture, Beijing-Hangzhou canal, Xixi Wetland, West Lake, where the southern water supported thousands of years of the Jiang Nan culture with epic love; but love is soft like water, which sweetly accompanies the Jiang Nan water lands. The overall curriculum emphasizes complete information and the combination of dynamics and statics. Language classes and activities classes are mainly held in the mornings; culture classes and cultural tours are mainly held in the afternoons. Topics of the Culture Class 1. Liangzhu Culture. 2. Hangzhou folk tales (Revival of Yue, Qiantang river tide). 3. Chinese tea culture. 4. Beijing-Hangzhou Canal. 5. Hangzhou folk tale (White Snake). 6. Experience Chinese family life. Objective 1. Studying and experiencing the local culture, history, and legend of Hangzhou, the campers learn about the general context of the development of Chinese history, particularly the history and customs of Southern China, as to pave the way for future studies of Chinese history and culture. 2. Through series of curriculum related Chinese studies, the campers may briefly introduce the history and customs of Hangzhou, and present and play the stories of Hangzhou with fluent Chinese. 5

Date Event Arrangements 09/07 Leave for Shanghai. 1. Arrive in Hangzhou, stay at student dormitory. 10/07 2. Class placement and adjustment: establish classes, class catchwords, teach camp songs, distribute materials (camp cloths, camp hats, badges, student handbooks, camp song lyrics). 3. Organize the campers to email the parents at the PC room. 1. Adjustment Training: introducing one another, safety instruction, and schedule reading. Learn to sing the Camp Song: <<Happy clapping song>> (Chinese). Rehearsal of catchwords: including Camp and class catchwords. 11/07 2. Own Students (volunteers): rehearse camp programs, and may invite American students to participate. 3. Camp opening ceremony and cultural performances: speeches of American student and teacher representatives, Chinese and American students performances. Campers show prepared homework (class placement): According to the homework, the campers conduct presentations and speeches by topic and by group. Chinese teachers give reviews and advise. Chinese Class: introduce one another, talk about the Chinese calendar, 12 Chinese zodiacs, and learn to write Fu. Culture Class: Liangzhu Culture. 12/07 Content: Liangzhu cultural region, time period, representative works, impact on the future generations; introducing the Liangzhu Cultural Museum. Cultural tour: Liangzhu Cultural Museum. The museum is an archaeological cultural museum specifically built to study the Liangzhu Culture. With three independent showrooms: Discovered Truth, Ancient Liangzhu and Liangzhu Civilization. 7
Chinese Class: Season and Climate of Hangzhou, introduce typical seasonal activities and Chinese cultural festivals, the students discuss their favorite seasons. Culture Class: Story of the Revival of Yue and the legend of the Qiantang River. 13/07 Cultural Tour: Liu He Tower and Qiantang New City citizen s home (Hangzhou Urban Planning Exhibit). Dinner at Qiantang New City, evening tour through city roads, and enjoy the Qiantang night scene. Chinese Class: Chinese food, order, billing, and table etiquettes etc. Culture Class: Chinese tea culture. The discovery and use of tea, types of tea, Hangzhou Long Jing Tea, Art of Tea etc. Live demonstration of tea arts, students prepare own tea. 14/07 Cultural Tour: Hangzhou Museum of Tea, Hangzhou Museum of Silk. Evening: complete one Chinese dish with the Chinese students - Dumplings. 15/07 Visit Jiang Nan water town Wu Zhen. Chinese Class: Direction and Shopping. 16/07 Culture Class: The historical relocation of the Beijing - Hangzhou canal. Content: Sui Dynasty construction of the canal, length of canal, uses, and significance to future generations. Origami Class: fold paper boat, paper airplane, and compete between classes. Canal visit in the evening. 17-18/07 Visit Chinese families, experience Chinese family lives. Parents of the families take the campers to tour the Southern Song Imperial Street, Xixi Wetland, Leifeng Pagoda and Santanyinyue etc. 8
Chinese Class: Review and Test of learned materials. 19/07 Culture Class: Zhu Liang. Rehearsal Program. 20/07 Camp Closing ceremony, party and cultural performances. July 20- July 29 Tour historic cities and explore China. Accommodation: hotels. Food: Chinese and Western foods 21/07 Shanghai Visit Yu garden, Cheng Huang temple, the Bund, People s Square, Museum of Shanghai, Shanghai Grand Theatre; acrobatics (swimming in the river, ride the Oriental Pearl tower). 22/07 Shanghai Visit Lu Xun s home, Toronto Cultural Avenue, New Tiandi, Sun Zhong San residence, French concession. Xi an Visit 23/07 Bangpo Museum of six thousand years of the downfall of matriarchal tribe, Huaqing Palace pool of the Tang Emperor and Yang Guifei, the Terracotta Warriors, the eighth wonder of the world. 24/07 Xi an Visit The world best preserved ancient defensive structure Ming Cheng Wall, Bell and Drum tower square, Muslim snack road, Goose Pagoda North Square, Shanxi History Museum. 9
Beijing Visit 25/07 Architectural treasure of world history the Temple of Heaven, the best preserved royal garden in the world Summer palace, Wangfujin Street, Wangfujin Department Store and other famous architectural scenes. Beijing Visit 26/07 Badaling Great Wall, Olympics opening and closing site the Bird s Nest, the National Aquatics Center. Beijing Hutongs, the residence of the world s richest man in the 18 th century home of Heshen, Wangfujin Quanjude. Beijing Visit 27/07 Tiananmen Square, People s Heroes Monument, Great Hall, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. First stop: Thriving Shanghai (July 20 July 22) Shanghai: China s largest city, one of the independent municipalities of China, economic and financial center, thriving international metropolis. Shanghai has both the modern urban culture and many historical monuments. Jiang Nan s indigenous Wu-Yue culture integrates with immigrated cultures of the world, forming a unique Shanghai Culture. Second stop: Ancient City of Xi an (July 23 July 25) Xi an: Ancient Xi an is one of the four global ancient capitals, and first of all Chinese ancient capitals. The birthplace of Chinese civilization, Xi an has long history with rich cultural heritage, and belongs to the first class of historic cities of the People s Republic of China. Xi an suburbs host more than 120 Imperial tombs. Xi an culture is the first in the world. Xi an enjoys the reputation as a Natural Historic Museum due to its rich historic and cultural heritage and abundant ancient relics and sites. Final stop: Imperial Capital Beijing (July 26 July 29) Beijing: the ancient city and capital of China, Beijing is fundamental to the Chinese ethnical and cultural heritage. Since the unification of the Qin Emperor, Beijing remained a center of Northern China, and was the capital of the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Beijing hosts a vast amount of world historic sites, including the largest and best preserved palace the Forbidden City, and China s largest royal garden the Summer Palace. From the ancient Ji city to the Youzhou of Tang, from the Dabu of Yuan to the Dijing of Ming-Qing, the present Beijing survived many dynasties, and preserved the sceneries of many imperial capitals and rich cultures. Beijing became a unique and attractive lure speak not of the light of the Temple of Heaven, wind of Beihai, lion of the Marco Polo Bridge, ferns of the TanTa temple; sing not about the flamboyant Tai He Hall, the road that goes 10 li and beyond the rainbows; only seeing the ancient ivy courtyard, and you feel sweet, crunchy, and loving the Beijing Accent. 11
