INSTITUTE INFORMATION DATES: The 2016 High School SSI will take place August 1-5. The Middle School SSI will take place August 8-1 LOCATION: This year s institutes will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church, 11200 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda, MD 2085 There is ample parking. All performances will be held on site. ACCEPTANCE AND PLACEMENT: National Philharmonic Summer String Institutes are designed for serious music students operating at an advanced level. Acceptance to the institute, seating, and chamber music assignments are determined primarily through teacher recommendations, current repertoire, and past SSI evaluations (if applicable). The needs of the section and the orchestra may also affect seating assignments. First time applicants and anyone applying for merit scholarship should submit a CD, DVD, or Youtube link. All others are encouraged to, as it is helpful in placement. NP may request an in-person audition if there is doubt about proper placement of a musician. COMMUNICATION: The Institute Director communicates with students and parents via a list-serve. Information about this will be sent upon acceptance to the Institute. PREPARATION: Students are expected to arrive on the first day of the Institute fully prepared on both their orchestral and chamber music. It is expected that students will have worked on Institute repertoire with their private teachers. PRE-FORMED CHAMBER GROUPS: National Philharmonic offers the opportunity for students in existing chamber ensembles (strings only) to be coached as a group at the Summer String Institutes. Students must submit individual applications and indicate on each application that they are coming as a pre-formed group.

SCHEDULE: The Institute runs 9-5 daily. Rehearsal starts PROMPTLY at 9AM. Please plan to pick up your student on time at 5PM. There are the following exceptions to the schedule: 1) Monday registration begins at 8:30. 2) Friday the evening orchestra concert begins at 7:30 PM. Students may leave at 5PM and return, or stay and order pizza for dinner. Please note that this is an ensemble-oriented Institute, and daily attendance is required. CLASS PERIODS IN DETAIL: 1) Orchestra rehearsals the orchestra will rehearse twice daily, at 9AM and 3:30PM. During Tuesday and Wednesday morning rehearsal time, there will be sectionals 2) Chamber rehearsals - Chamber ensembles will rehearse daily. Students will receive guidance from Institute Intern Coaches. 3) Coachings - Chamber ensembles will receive one coaching daily with their faculty coach 4) Lessons - Students will have two 55 minute lessons with a private teacher during the course of the week. The primary focus of the private lessons will be Institute repertoire. 5) Rhythm through Movement class Students will meet one period daily with University of MD Professor Isiah Johnson for this class, which focuses on developing better internal rhythm through creative movement exercises. Skills learned in this class directly assist in playing music accurately and steadily with others in orchestra and chamber music sessions as well as with solo playing. 6) Sight Reading (Middle School only) on days when students do not have private lessons, they will spend a period working with Institute faculty and intern coaches on learning techniques to improve reading unfamiliar chamber and orchestral music (a skill that is often tested in youth orchestra auditions). 7) Free period (High School only) on days when students do not have private lessons, they will have one free period for practice (if space is available), study, or rest. Optional sight-reading sessions may also be offered.
