With this record-breaking 2014/15 season behind us, the club now has the opportunity to represent Cairns on the international stage, with its invitation to the Atlas Four Nation Challenge in China this May. The tournament presents a unique opportunity for corporate partners to showcase their brand in the burgeoning China market, with exposure to an audience of more than 20 million people. This is an exciting opportunity for the club and Cairns region, and I hope to partner with you as we represent Cairns on and off the court in China. 2014/15 Club Records 1st The Taipans secured the 2014/15 minor premiership, the first regional side in more than 30 years to achieve that feat. 21 A win-loss record of 21-7 is the best in club history, surpassing the club s previous best of 18 wins in 2006. 6 The team enjoyed a club-record 6-game winning streak in 2014/15: twice! 5 The 5 starters for the Taipans remained the same all season, making the Taipans the first club in NBL history to retain the same starting lineup. 9 The Taipans were strong on the road, notching a club-record 9 wins on the road in 2014/15. ATLAS FOUR NATIONS TOURNAMENT The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans will face the best of the US college circuit and the Chinese Basketball Association in the 2015 Atlas Four Nation Challenge in China this May. The NBL minor premiers will attend the 12-day invitational tournament with a Taipans-select team, featuring 9 games in 12 days in the host cities: Fengjie, Jiangyin and Changshu. The Taipans attendance at the tournament will provide valuable exposure for the club and Cairns region to the tune of more than 20 million viewers over the tournament. ABOUT THE HOST CITIES Atlas Four Nation Challenge will be played across three cities over 12 days, each presenting differing opportunities for Cairns. Jiangyin, administered by Wuxi City, is a one of the richest country-level cities in China, underpinned by a strong local manufacturing industry. Huaxi Village in Jiangyin is considered the richest village in China, boasting 36 listed companies, two economic development zones and one high-tech zone. Changshu is also a country-level city, under the jurisdiction of Suzhou city. It also boasts a robust economy development, with a GDP per capita of USD$20,000 in 2010. Their slogan roughly translated is basketball is the city s new name card. Fengjie Jiangyin Changshu Finally, Fengjie is a smaller country city located in the Chongqing municipality. The country has over 1 million people, with 85% of them engaged in agricultural industries. PROMOTING CAIRNS The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans have joined forces with Advance Cairns to promote the Cairns region in China at the Atlas Four-Nation Challenge. The strategic alliance will enable both entities to maximise exposure in the tournament cities of Jiangyin, Changshu and Fenjie. Advance Cairns is supporting the Taipans Atlas Four-Nation Challenge in China with media leverage through Economic Development Officer Miranda Wei. Miranda has extensive experience in Chinese media, and will work closely with the Taipans to ensure a strong promotion and media exposure of the Taipans and Cairns region in China. We see the Taipans as the ideal vehicle to promote Cairns and further build the region s relationships in China. Advance Cairns CEO, Mark Matthews Partnership with Advance Cairns, the Cairns region s peak economic development body, ensures the club would provide strong representation of Cairns on and off the court for the duration of the tournament. Advance Cairns support ensures the Taipans tour provides even stronger promotion of the Cairns region, in addition to the club s own goals of player development and talent identification. ABOUT US: NATIONAL TEAM COMMUNITY CLUB Owned by the Cairns community, the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans organisation has grown from strength to strength over by remaining true to its roots in the Cairns community. The club remains the only side in Cairns to compete in a national league, thanks to a loyal and passionate local following that rallied to save the club from extinction six years ago with the Save the Taipans campaign. Now, under a community-ownership model operating as a not-for-profit incorporated association, the Taipans undertake a rigorous schedule of community engagements and support to local charities to recognise and repay this contribution by the community. a direct responsibility to engage with that community regardless of on-court results. With the community ownership structure comes a direct responsibility to engage with that community, and the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans take this commitment seriously, regardless of on-court results. Win or lose, the club amassed more than 1000 hours of community engagements in each of the previous two seasons. Players undertook a regular schedule of community activities including school visits, basketball clinics, charity events and promotions and fundraising events on request, such as school fetes and community events: all at no charge back to the community. Each season all players from Taipans Academy athletes to development players, reserves and the starting five are encouraged to connect with the Cairns community at every opportunity. Since 2009, the club has recognised this commitment by awarding its Commitment to Community Award at the annual presentation dinner, ensuring that this key facet of the club s operations and history remains a focus for players, fans and staff alike.
