GUIDELINES FOR CIVIL MARRIAGE CEREMONIES Clerk Services 1. Please note that a Civil Marriage Ceremony cannot have any religious content. 2. Ceremonies will be conducted: in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Fridays, or other dates as mutually agreed upon providing availability of Council Chamber or Community Room ; in another municipal facility that has been booked and the contract received; at another location, arranged by the applicants. All dates, times and locations are upon mutual agreement, and contingent upon the availability of a Marriage Commissioner. 3. The appropriate fees, plus taxes, will be paid in the form of cash, debit, certified cheque, or money order in order to secure the date and time for the ceremony and shall be paid prior to, or on the day of, the pre-ceremony meeting. 4. All Civil Marriage Ceremony fees are non-refundable. 5. All requests for a Civil Marriage Ceremony are to be received at least seven days prior to the date of the ceremony. 6. Civil Marriage Ceremonies must be witnessed by two (2) individuals. If the applicants cannot provide their own, the Town can appoint witnesses at an additional cost. 7. There is no minimum age requirement for a witness, however, it is suggested they should be at least 16 years of age and should be able to understand and appreciate the nature of the ceremony and be able to give evidence of such at a later date, if required. 8. Changes to date and/or time are permitted at no additional charge provided that notification is received a minimum of 3 days prior to the scheduled ceremony and subject to the availability of facility space and Marriage Commissioner. 9. Pre-ceremony meeting is included in the fee for a Civil Marriage Ceremony and is required as part of the process. Approximately 30 minutes long At Town Hall during business hours or at another time/location that is mutually agreeable To be scheduled at 7-14 business days prior to the ceremony; Both parties must be in attendance and provide photo identification; Marriage Licence presented at this time (issuance date must be within 3 months of the ceremony); and, The Application for a Civil Marriage Ceremony is provided and complete. 10. The Civil Marriage Ceremony takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the ceremony to allow sufficient time to review any final details.
11. Alcohol or stimulants are not to be used by the celebrants or their witnesses prior to or during the ceremony. If the Commissioner believes that alcohol or other stimulants have been used, the ceremony will not proceed. NOTE: The Record of Solemnization of Marriage given at the ceremony is not a legal record. Approximately 12 weeks after the ceremony, the applicants may apply to the Office of the Registrar General to obtain an official Certificate of Marriage. The appropriate form is included within the licence or at serviceontario.ca. 2
