Requirements for an Honours Degree What are the application requirements for an honours degree? Applicants must be in possession of (a) a BCom (Finance) OR any related degree with a programme specific minimum revised NQF level 7. For certain of the honours programmes certain subjects at second and third year level may be required: Financial Management: Accounting and Financial Management at third year level; Financial Planning: Financial Planning at third year level; Investment Management: Investment Management at third year level and; Property Valuation and Management: Property Valuation and Management at third year level. What is the minimum mark requirement to gain entrance into an honours programme? In most of the honours programme a minimum average of 65% is required in the appropriate specialisation field. For example in Financial Management students will have to obtain 65% average for both accounting and financial management for Financial Planning a 65% average for financial planning. If I am busy completing my final year of undergraduate studies, can I still apply for honours? Yes. You must apply with your current results and once you receive your final results you need to submit it to the faculty. If you are a UJ student your final results will automatically be received. Can I start with the Honours degree while still completing one subject of my undergrad studies? No. You need to have obtained your undergrad prior to registration date. Can I attempt the degree while working? Yes, except for the BCom Honours (Financial Management) programme which is a one year full time programme with all lectures presented during the day. Therefore, the BCom Honours (Financial Management) programme is not suited to students that are also working. The reminder of the honours programmes all present both on a full time basis and a part time basis. All the classes are during the evening for both full time and part time students. The only difference between full time and part time is that full time students are required to complete all the modules offered, over a one year period,
whereas part time students have the option to complete the modules over a two year period. Please consult the programme brochures for more information. How do I apply? 1. Remember to give a valid email address I heard there is an application test, how does it work? Yes, each honours programme requires the writing of an entrance assessment or skills assessment. The assessment is there to assess the applicant s knowledge of the subject field selected for his or hers honours degree. For example if the applicants first choice selection is BCom Honours (Financial Management) then the assessment will assess the students knowledge of financial management. For more details on the entrance assessment or skills assessment please consult the specific honours programme brochure. If applicants have applied for two honours programmes it is recommended that they write both entrance assessment and skills assessment, as there is only one round of assessments in November 2014 When is the entrance assessment? Details are available in the programme brochure. There is more than one test date, however applicants are invited to write on a first come- first-serve basis and once the course is full no further applicants will be considered. A competence assessment in English, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel may also be required.

One option is to apply for another Honours degree within DFIM namely, before the closing date: BCom Honours (Financial Management); BCom Honours (Financial Planning); BCom Honours (Investment Management); BCom Honours (Quantitative Finance); and BCom Honours (Property Valuation and Management). BCom Honours (Treasury Management) Please consult the departmental website for more information. Another option is to apply for one of the three Bridging programmes that are available. Passing the bridging programmes with the minimum academic criteria will assist unsuccessful applicants with their application for honours the following year. There are three bridging programmes available: Bridging Programme in Finance. This programme can be taken by students that would like to take any of the following honours degrees: BCom Honours (Financial Planning); BCom Honours (Investment Management); BCom Honours (Property Valuation and Management) The Bridging Programme in Financial Management or the Advanced Diploma in Finance (if you are a diploma student with a UJ diploma in accounting or information systems). These two programme can be taken by students that would like to take BCom Honours (Financial Management) Quantitative Finance: This programme can be taken by students that would like to complete the BCom Honours (Quantitative Finance) programme What is the cost of the honours programmes? The different honours programmes have different module cost depending on weather it is a year programme or a semester programme. The cost for 2015 will only be available in November 2014. The cost of the programmes for 2014 is listed below. Please note this is only an indication of modules fees it is NOT the actual fees for 2015. The cost below excludes accommodation, registration fees, ICT levy and text books.

Where can I get my proof of registration? After registration you will be able to download your proof of registration from ulink.
