How to: Keywords and Best Bets Search keywords enable site collection administrators to create definitions for specific words or phrases. These definitions are displayed when a site user performs a search including the keywords in the search criteria. Keywords enable UC Denver schools, colleges and departments to present important details about specific topics. Created keywords can be enhanced by associated Best Bet links. Best Bets are references to specific materials that are related to keywords. Best Bet links are listed on the search results page when a search s criteria include the associated keywords. Best Bets allow us to assign important relevant materials to special possible search phrases making sure important items are prominently displayed. For example, keywords and best bets would be valuable when you know visitors will perform searches for tuition. You can create a keyword called tuition and associate a Best Bet link that references the Cost and Financing site. This way, you can guarantee that a search for tuition will prominently list links to the appropriate site (Bursar) and tuition charts. Managing Keywords Keywords are implemented at the site collection level. Currently, only the Content Management System (CMS) Administrator has permissions at the site collection hierarchy. The process to setup keywords involves your participation as a site owner. Please submit a list of keywords and best bets for the content on your site to the CMS Administrator. Provide the information below using the form in Appendix I. Here is how the requested information will be displayed. Make sure and list the preferred display order for best bets. Keyword word or tem for content a visitor would search for. Synonyms other words that visitors might use for the keyword term. See Google keyword tool. By associating at least one best bet for the keyword, the visitor will see the best bet appear in the right-hand of the results page when a search is executed using a synonym. Below is the information needed to create a best bet. Best Bet Title Title for best bet. (Titles and descriptions appear as entered) URL URL for best bet (the page where the information can be located) Description Descriptive text selling the keyword Rank the priority display order for the best bet(s). Submit this list to Carol Martin. The Web Development Team will review the keywords. The keyword process will be implemented by someone with Site Admissions permissions. Depending on the request load, keywords will e added within 40 hours of approval. Once completed, the keywords and best bets appear immediately. Page 2 Keywords and Best Bets
Keyword Implementation To define a new Best Bet, you have to use Keywords. This is done thus: 1. From your site home page, click "Site Actions/Site Settings/Modify All Site Settings". 2. Under Site Collection Administration, click "Search Keywords". Keywords and Best Bets Page 3
3. On the Manage Keywords page, click Add Keyword. 4. On the Add Keyword page, click "Add Best Bet". 5. On the Add Best Bet popup page, enter the Target URL, Title and Description of the best bet and click "OK". 6. Back on the Add Keyword page, enter the Keyword Phrase, Synonyms (separated by a semi colon), Definition, Contact Person and Expiration Date and click "OK". Page 4 Keywords and Best Bets
7. The new keyword and best bet should now be listed. 1. Testing by searching for "My Phrase" should yield the Best Bet. You can customize where Best Bets show up on the results page. In our example's case, it was set to be the first results in the list. Keywords and Best Bets Page 5
2. A search for any of the synonyms should yield the same result. Best Bet Test by searching for Professional MBA. The result should display the best bet.
