Before you start this examination you should do some investigation into young children s parties. Find out more about the games they play and the food they eat. Pay particular attention to the sorts of visual images that appeal to young children at parties. Read the following information before you begin. Fun & Games is a small mail-order company that makes products to help busy parents make their children s parties more fun. They now wish to expand the range of products they can offer. One idea is for a Party Pack that contains a number of mainly paper/card- based items, such as invitation cards, place-setting cards, party hats, paper plates, etc. Other low-cost items, such as balloons, may be included, but they will need to be low-weight and small to keep postage costs to the minimum. Question 1 - Market research and presenting information 1a) Suggest and briefly explain two ways in which useful information could be gathered about the market for special mail-order Party Packs. 1b) A recent survey has produced the following data about the number of children of different age groups that attend parties: Number of guests (i.e. children of a similar age) Less than 5 20% of parties Between 6 and 10 40% of parties Between 11 and 15 30% of parties More than 15 10% of parties. Produce a suitable and interesting graphical representation of this information, including the use of colour. (5 marks) Total 9 marks 2
Question 2 Designing An invitation card is needed to go with the Party Pack. Fun and Games would like this to be a Pop-up card. The size of the card is to be 297 mm by 210 mm (ie A4). It can be used in portrait or landscape position. It can be folded and stuck in any way desired. Extra parts made in card can be added. It must contain the following text: You are invited to a Party! There must also be a space for details of the day, date and location of the party to be added by the host. 2) Show two different ideas for possible designs for a pop-up card. Use sketches and words to describe your ideas. Think about what sort of pop-up mechanisms could be used and what sort of visual images and colours might be suitable. Consider where the text might be placed. Include an evaluation of the suitability for each idea. Marks will be awarded for i) two different ideas that might work ii) quality of sketching and notes or labels iii) use of colour and visual images iv) clear, reasoned evaluation of each idea Please use the next two pages for your ideas. Question 3 - Finalising and communicating a design 3a) Choose one of the two ideas you sketched in Question 2. State which one you have chosen and state briefly why. (2 marks) 3b) Show a detailed development of the idea you have chosen. Marks will be awarded for the following: i) A successful design that matches the original requirements for the design set out in Question 2. ii) A series of drawings and notes that clearly show how the mechanism works and what the finished card will look like. (8 marks) iii) The quality of lettering and coloured rendering of the graphic artwork that would be printed on the card. Total 20 marks Question 4 - Evaluating a design Write an evaluation of the final idea you drew in Question 3. Question 5 - Formal methods of drawing The contents of the Party Packs are to be contained in a rectangular stiff board box with flaps on the lid that tuck in. The overall size of the box when closed will be 200 x 150 x 50. Draw the closed boxed at a scale of 1:2 in orthographic projection and include the dimensions drawn in the correct way (ie to BS PD7308). (10 marks) Question 6 - Isometric drawing Produce an isometric 1:2 drawing of the Party Pack box, using the dimensions given in the previous question. 6
Question 7 - Fastenings The Party Packs need to include a party hat for children to wear. These will be made from a flat piece of card bent into a conical shape by the host. Suggest two ways in which the hat can be fastened into a conical shape and give an advantage and disadvantage of each method. Question 8 - Printing effects The party hat will have a printed design on it. To make the hat more attractive and durable special printing effects can be applied. Name and briefly explain three different types of special effect that could be used, and give an example of how each might improve the hat. (9 marks) Question 9 - Graphic symbols Fun and Games want to encourage people to recycle their paper products after use, and plan to print a standard recycling symbol on them. Sketch an appropriate symbol that could be used. (5 marks) Question 10 - Control systems Each Party Pack is to include a special story CD that guests can take home. The CD, case and paper insert is to be manufactured by another company in a factory. 10a) List two of the main inputs into the production system for the CDs and their packaging, two main transformation processes and the main output.
