New York s Sheet Metal Industry: From Design to Delivery New York s construction industry requires high standards for its cutting-edge projects. The Sheet Metal Industry of New York, a labor-management partnership comprised of Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning Contractors Association of New York City, Inc., Sheet Metal Contractors National Association of Long Island, Inc. and Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 28, is the construction trade that designs, fabricates, coordinates and installs commercial and residential heating, ventilating, air conditioning and architectural and industrial sheet metal. Our trades men and women are expert in custom detail work. Sheet metal artisans cut, form, weld, solder, assemble and install the metal used in commercial, residential and industrial construction, transforming raw materials into finished products. Building Futures and Opportunities We provide valuable opportunities to thousands of New Yorkers each year, granting over 200 individuals who enter our apprentice program access to our highly sophisticated trade. The Sheet Metal Industry of New York represents the diversity of our region and is comprised of men and women from a wide array of races, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, with minorities and women representing 60% of our apprentices. Our trades people live in all five boroughs of New York City, the greater metropolitan area and Long Island. They understand the value of community involvement and giving back to New York, both by contributing to its tax base and supporting charities and organizations throughout the region. Fair Wages and Long-Term Careers Members of Sheet Metal Local Union 28 are trained with technical skills that stay with them for the lifetime of their career. Members of our workforce are trained in safe work practices and understand the importance of working safely to ensure their personal as well as public welfare. Union Sheet Metal apprentices go through a five-year training program emphasizing safety, and journey persons receive continuous training to stay current in the latest safety practices. The federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) reported that nearly 90% of all construction fatalities occurred on non-union jobsites and WNBC News reported that union projects in New York City are six times safer than non-union projects. Focus on Education and Training Our apprentices and journey persons are trained in the use of sophisticated technologies and equipment. Union Sheet Metal Contractors cumulatively spend millions of dollars on our educational facility s skills training program and on-the-job follow through to ensure a high level of performance. We provide continuing education to keep all of our workers up to date on evolving technology and industry practices.
