I took Spanish in Jr. High and in High School so I understand what it is like to learn Spanish as a second language. I took those years of Spanish in school and put them to practice in Chile where I lived for a couple of years. When I got back to the States I graduated from Brigham Young University. I started my teaching career shortly after teaching High School Spanish and ESL in New Mexico. I continued with my own education getting my Masters in Education from Northern Arizona University. I have taught Spanish, ESL, Social Studies, and computers. Overall I have over 20 years experience working from Kindergarten to High School. I was fortunate to open Sossaman a couple of years back and I have been very impressed with our students academic and social maturity. This year is going to be a wonderful year! Please be sure to check Synergy, the grade book system on a regular basis. Course Description: Bienvenidos (Welcome) to Spanish Semesters 1 and 2. I look forward to working with you this year as we introduce you to Spanish and as we develop your knowledge and proficiency in Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Spanish 1 is a high school level course for high school credit. This course requires a high level of work and effort. There is daily homework in addition to weekly quizzes or tests. Spanish 1 is an introductory course that provides the student with the ability to use the Spanish language for basic communication. Students will be able to speak, read, write and listen to Spanish at the novice level. They will gain a general understanding of where Spanish is spoken throughout the world today. They also will come to understand some of the similarities and differences between Spanish-speaking cultures and their own culture. Spanish 1A is also a high school level course for high school credit but runs at
a much slower pace. Spanish 1A is a yearlong course that when accompanied with Spanish 1B the following year will meet the requirements for high school credit. (December and May) Students who do not earn a C (70%) Fall Semester are not recommended for the class for Spring Semester.
High School Credit: Per HUSD policy to receive high school credit the student must pass first and second semesters with a minimum of a C (70%) and pass both semester finals (multiple choice) with a minimum of a C (70%). Disclaimer Statement: Course content may vary from this outline to meet the needs of the class Retaking/Redoing tests/assessments: Students are permitted to retake any graded assessment, excluding the final exams. This includes quizzes, projects, writing tests, speaking tests and unit comprehension exams. However, to retake/redo an assessment, students must first complete any incomplete classwork or homework and fill out an action plan form signed by their parent. Retakes/redos must be completed before the end of the quarter in which it was assigned. Rules: 1.) Promote respect, safety and learning of yourself and others. 2.) Be working on your opening assignment when the bell rings. 3.) Bring your materials to class every day. 4.) Do your best in class each day. Consequences: 1.) Warning 2.) Call/e-mail/note to parents 3.) Time out in alternative area 4.) Lunch bunch come in during lunch for 5/10/15 time periods (Students will not miss lunch but will lose some of the social time) 5.) Behavior Contract 6.) Office referral A student may be sent to the office before going through these consequences if the behavior is severe. Rule #1: Respect must be demonstrated at all times. If this is done then the classroom environment is conducive to optimal student learning. Rule #2: Every single day I will greet you in Spanish at the door. Upon entering you will respond to me in Spanish then you will quietly go to your seat. In your seat you will take out your agenda and copy down the objective and plan for the day. Then immediately begin working on the bellwork inside your interactive notebook. Rule #3: Refer to supply list above. Rule #4: Do your best each day refers both to behavior and effort. Everyone has the ability to control themselves and you must do so appropriately in this class. I do not know is never an acceptable response when answering a question. If you do not understand something then respectfully ask for clarification or ask questions so that you can understand. Learning a foreign language is not easy and often times is intimidating. If each individual follows rules 1-4 then no one should ever feel embarrassed to answer. In fact, part of learning a second-language is making mistakes.
Bathroom procedure: Using the restroom is to be done during passing period. If an emergency arises then simply ask in Spanish at an appropriate time. Puedo ir al bano? (Pwe-tho eed al banyo). Then you must sign out before leaving. Students who use class time to use the restroom instead of using it between classes will come in during lunch for a short period. If there is an ongoing problem, please contact me and we will make accommodations. Instruction: During direct-instruction (teacher to students) everyone will remain in their seats and will listen and participate appropriately. Detention: After school detention may be assigned due to missing materials, assignments and tardies as determined by the teacher. Written notification will be sent home with students to be signed by the parent and returned the following day. If the form is not returned, discipline action by Administration may occur. Interactive Notebook: Students are required to bring a 100 page or bigger composition notebook to class daily. This is where classwork, homework, notes, handouts, and vocabulary go. On the left hand side will be student output and on the right side page will be teacher input. Care and upkeep of notebook is student responsibility, notebooks will be checked often, and notebooks must be legible. Students will use around 100 pages per semester so an additional interactive notebook may be needed for second semester. Homework: Homework will be given daily and needs to be completed. Homework may be on Edmodo, handouts, or in student interactive notebooks. Homework assignments will be posted on the calendar on my website. Students need to practice speaking Spanish daily using both new and old vocabulary. Quizzes/Tests (pruebas/examines): There are 11 units and tests will be given to assess reading, writing, speaking and listening. Quizzes will be given multiple times each unit to assess grammar and vocabulary. Absences: If you are absent it is your responsibility to get the missing work. Look at the class calendar on my teacher page. In class ask a partner what you missed and they will let you copy down the agenda. You will also want to update your interactive notebook by looking at the class master copy. Notes/handouts and worksheets will be filed in the make-up work file, and will also be available digitally on my teacher page. Tardies: You are tardy if you arrive to class after the bell without a pass. If you are tardy you may need to come in during your free lunch time.
