1 University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures ITL 102 3c INTRODUCTORY ITALIAN II (SPRING 2005) Instructor: Office hours: Office: Belita Brooks Faki Monday/Wednesday 7:00-8:15pm 407 E Phone number: DFLL Phone number: [email protected] Course Description: This course is the continuation of Italian 101. Italian 102 teaches the essentials of Italian language and culture needed for proficient communication, and includes basic exercises in listening comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading. Conducted in Italian. 3 hours. Goals: This course is the continuation of Italian 101. The goals of this course include a beginning mastery of reading, writing, oral comprehension, oral communication, and knowledge of Italian culture. At the end of the course the student should be able to: 1 Understand and appreciate everyday elements of Italian culture. 2 Comprehend spoken Italian passages based on chapter topics and vocabulary. 3 Read and understand written Italian passages based on chapter topics and vocabulary. 4 Write and speak in simple Italian. Textbooks: Lazzarino, Graziana et al, In Giro Per L Italia (Boston: McGraw Hill, 2002). The textbook package includes a workbook, an audio CD, and a listening comprehension CD. You will also need an Italian-English dictionary. Webster s New World Italian Dictionary is recommended. Attendance and Classroom Policies: Class participation, contribution and actual speaking in the target language is crucial in order to learn a language, therefore class attendance is mandatory. Any absence is going to affect students class participation and final grade. Ten minutes late will be considered one absence. Likewise, leaving early will count as an absence. If under special circumstances, students need to miss classes, the following attendance policy will be applied: 2 % from the FINAL grade is deducted for EACH absence above 3. More than 7 absences will result in an AUTOMATIC F. Along with the syllabus and this handout, you will be given our departmental attendance policy. Please read it carefully.
2 Italian II syllabus Page 2 Class Preparation and Class Participation: You will be graded on the following factors daily: 1 being well-prepared for class 2 making positive contributions to the class 3 using Italian in the classroom 4 progress in the skill of communication 5 volunteering to answer and ask questions 6 alertness 7 participating in exercises and activities 8 good attitude Classroom Policies: 1 Class begins promptly. Ten minutes late will be considered one absence. On exam days, the oral part of the quiz will not be repeated for latecomers. 2 Class ends at 9:15 PM on Mon. and 8:15 on Wed. Leaving early will be considered an absence. 3 Homework must be handed in on time. 4 Quizzes and exams are only taken on the dates and times assigned. 5 Please turn off phones and pagers while in class. 6 Please do not eat in class. Homework Assignments: 1 Homework assignments will consist mainly of textbook, workbook and reading assignments in preparation for the next class. You must prepare and study the assigned pages for that class. You must self-correct the workbook activities BEFORE you go to class. Corrections must be done in a separate color ink (preferably red). It is important that you complete the workbook exercises classby-class throughout the chapter in order to reinforce the material covered during each class and receive credit. On the day of the chapter exam your workbooks will be checked. Each chapter assignment will be graded based on the completeness and the quality of the work. 2 Two movie reviews will be due the last class meeting of January and Febuary (see syllabus). For this assignment, you will watch an Italian movie of your choosing. The review consists of a (very) brief summary in Italian, your impressions (did you like it or not?) AND a list of any Italian words or phrases you were able to recognize. The most important part of this assignment is listening for any Italian you can understand 3 Students are required to attend and participate in the Italian Conversation table/ Italian Club at least 5 times during the semester. You may invite friends within and outside the UAB community to attend and share this experience with you. The sessions are immediately after class every Wednesday.
3 Exams: 1. There will be five chapter exams: chapters 5/ There will be separate vocabulary and verb quizzes for each chapter. 3. There will be a cumulative final exam. 4. The oral exam will be a brief (10-15 minutes) conversazione in which your ability to communicate using the grammar and vocabulary covered in the semester will be evaluated. 5. You will be tested on all aspects of language learning through written homework (including work with the CDs), classroom participation, and through periodic quizzes and exams. Grades: Class Preparation and Participation: 15% Chapter Exams: 35% Homework: 15% Final Oral Exam: 10% Vocabulary and Verb Quizzes: 20% Italian Table & Lab: 5% Italian Conversation Table: The UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures sponsors a free weekly Italian Conversation Table where you can practice Italian with others in an informal setting. Any level of Italian proficiency is welcome. Check the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures website for more details.
