Hyperlinking in PowerPoint 2007 Tool Summary Activating a hyperlink will result in a move to a new location in the slide show or the performance of an action such as opening a document or video, playing a sound, or opening a web site. There are two ways to insert a hyperlink. To display a hyperlink as text: To hyperlink an object or picture on the slide: http://www.texthyperlinkexample/ 1. Right click on the text or choose the Insert tab. 1. Right click on the object. 2. Click on Hyperlink. 2. Click on Hyperlink. 3. Once you have selected Hyperlink, a dialog box will appear. 4. Select what the text or object will hyperlink to by clicking on one of the tabs to the left, highlighting the desired document, slide, or website, and clicking OK. a. Existing File or Web Page will link the text or object to an existing file, such as a Word document, PowerPoint slide show, video, audio recording, or to a webpage. When hyperlinking to another file, be sure to save the hyperlinked file along with the PowerPoint on any flashdrive, CD, or additional computer. If not, the hyperlink will not work because the file will not be available for the presentation to open up. You might want to keep the PowerPoint and hyperlinked files together in one folder for organization. Select from files located anywhere on the computer or attached hardware (e.g. flash drive) by using the dropdown arrow. Page1

If the student s needs are such that he or she is unable to physically click on an object, hyperlinks can also be activated when the mouse hovers over the object or text. 1. Click on the object or text. 2. Choose the Insert tab>action. 3. Click on Mouse Over or Mouse Click. 4. Select Hyperlink to: 5. Highlight the desired slide, file, or URL to hyperlink to. 6. Click OK. The object or text can also play a sound OR become highlighted when clicked on or moused over to add another auditory prompt or reinforcement. Page3
Add an Action Button An action button is a ready made button that you can insert into your presentation and define hyperlinks for. Action buttons contain shapes, such as right and left arrows, and commonly understood symbols for going to next, previous, first, and last slides, and for playing movies or sounds. 1. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click the Shapes button. 2. This menu of shapes will appear. Page4
3. In the Action Buttons section, click the button that you want to add. If you hover the mouse over the button, a pop up will describe the button s function. Pop up 4. Click a location on the slide to place the button, and then drag the mouse cursor to draw the shape and size for the button. 5. When you release the mouse button, an Action Settings dialog box will appear. In the Action Settings dialog box, do one of the following: To choose the behavior of the action button when you click it, select the Mouse Click tab. To choose the behavior of the action button when you move (or hover) the cursor over it, select the Mouse Over tab. Page5
6. To choose what will happen when you click or move the pointer over the action button, do one of the following: If you don't want anything to happen, select None. To create a hyperlink, select Hyperlink to, and then select the destination for the hyperlink (another slide within the presentation, a website URL, or a file such as a Word document or another PowerPoint). To play a sound, select the Play sound check box, and then select the sound that you want to play. After making your selections, select OK.
