Our Lady of the Wayside Religious Education Program Dear Parents and Students (incoming 8th Graders for 2016-2017), Welcome to the Second Year Confirmation Preparation Program! An important part of Confirmation Preparation is the accumulation of 20 service hours or more on the part of each Confirmation Candidate. The giving of service marks the Christian as a true follower of Jesus. We ask students to please be very conscientious about completing these hours. The four categories of people to whom students are asked to minister are: Parish, Home (Family), School, and Community. The idea of Confirmation service is that it is to be extended and performed with no monetary payment. We ask that the service hours be rather evenly extended across the four categories, and that especially Home/Family be limited to 5 hours. The following information regarding Confirmation hours will appear in this year's Parents' and Students' Religious Education Handbook and is to be followed in order for students to meet their Confirmation requirements: Service Projects are chosen by the students (20 hours or more to parish, family, community and school, with a maximum of 5 hours for family). Confirmation certificates will not be issued to students who do not complete their 20 hours of service. There is a Green Log sheet included in this packet so your Confirmation Candidate can begin to record the necessary information for services given. You will note that this record sheet is to be completed and handed in to me by Tuesday, January 31,2017. Enclosed is a list of suggestions for service hours. However, Candidates may choose to do other services. All forms of Christian Service to others are encouraged. If in doubt about the appropriateness of a particular service, please check with Sister Adrienne. I will be calling the boys and girls who offer to help in the Religious Education Office during the summer occasionally in the mornings, from 9:30-11:30. (See attached form to volunteer for this service.) Thank you for your support and cooperation as our intense preparation for Confirmation begins. OUR LADY OF THE WAYSIDE SUGGESTIONS FOR CONFIRMATION SERVICE HOURS 2016-2017 ALTAR SERVER: Being an altar server is a very important ministry to our Parish. It is an opportunity for you to serve your parish community. By your example of assisting the priests/deacons with pride and attention, you can encourage all the Wayside community to participate more fully in their worship. Credit for 5 hours only (1 hour per Mass served) will be given to students who wish to receive this credit for altar serving. Altar serving credit includes only weekend (Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses) no service hours credit for funerals and weddings. THE LUTHERAN HOME is a housing facility with medical support for senior citizens. Volunteer services offer a wide variety of activities and opportunities for interaction with an older generation. Most of the services involve working directly with the residents. Volunteers are needed to assist residents in participating in various activities for a 2-hour time period. Call Beth Gauthier at 847-368-7484 or email bgauthier@lulife.org. Please see attached flier for information about Orientation.
