Name Date Chapters 6 & 7- Common and Proper Nouns A noun names a person, place, or thing. A common noun names any person, place, or thing. Some examples are dog, town, doctor, and street. A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or thing. A proper noun begins with a capital letter. Some examples are Mrs. Smith, New York City, and Spot. Some proper nouns contain more than one word and each important word begins with a capital letter (Matthews Elementary). The name of a day, month, or holiday also begins with a capital letter. With a partner, read through chapter 6 and see if you can find 6 proper nouns. Rule: The proper nouns you find cannot all be names of people. Then circle if it is a person, place, or thing. 1.
