WELCOME! UVU PRE-Nursing Program

Our mission is to provide quality nursing education, help students to cultivate requisite knowledge, sound clinical judgment, and a foundation for lifelong learning as they progress toward becoming competent, caring nurses in a complex and changing health care environment.

Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) with Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) completion. The Nursing program prepares graduates at the associate level to provide direct patient centered care and to collaborate with the healthcare team. BSN graduates are prepared to provide direct and indirect patient centered care, as well as to design, coordinate, and manage healthcare, to assume leadership roles, to develop leadership and management skills, and to enter graduate education in nursing. Admission to the nursing program is based on a comprehensive and competitive application process.

ENTRANCE A student must complete the following steps: Apply to UVU. If you are a current concurrent enrollment student you must meet with a pre-nursing counselor to be cleared to register. You MUST reapply to UVU to be a student. You declare your major AS PREP 2.

Test scores, Transcripts, and Webstart You are required to submit your high school and any college transcripts. These Must be OFFICIAL, Sealed, and sent to UVU Admissions office. You must take and submit an ACT test if you are under the age of 20. If you feel like your ACT was low, you can take the accuplacer. It costs $10 the first time, and $10 for each subsequent test try. Students must complete orientation to be cleared to register. To register go to uvu.edu/orientation.

There are three weighted factors used in UVU s compe77ve applica7on process. These include: Prerequisite GPA: Weighted 60%(based only on the prerequisite courses) TEAS Test Scores: Weighted 40%(currently version V) (These two above factors determine the rank- order of applicants and which students are allowed to interview) An interview process of the top applicants will determine the number of accepted applicants. A maximum of 40 students will be accepted in Fall and Spring semesters. We do not accept nursing students in the Summer semesters.

Prerequisite Courses Biol 1010 Zool 2320/2325 Chem 1110 Nutr 1020 Engl 1010 Psy 1100 Zool 2420/2425 Math 1050 General Biology (not calculated in GPA) Human Anatomy with Lab Elementary Chemistry for the Health Sciences Founda7ons of Human Nutri7on Introduc7on to Wri7ng Human Development Life Span Human Physiology with Lab College Algebra 3 credits 3 credits 1 credit 4 credits 3 credits 3 credits 3 credits 3 credits 1 credit 4 credits Application scoring includes the GPA calculated from these courses. It is vital to obtain good grades in order to have a competitive GPA. Courses must be completed with a grade posted on a transcript, in order to be eligible to apply to the program. Classes that are in progress at the time of the application deadline will not be considered till the following application period. All prerequisites must be completed with a B- grade or better except Biology 1010 which must be a C- or higher. The lab grades must be a B- or higher but are not factored into application GPA No course can be taken more than twice in a 5-year time frame.

Prerequisite courses ARE YOUR GENERAL ED and build upon each other. Please see Pre-nursing counselor to obtain an accurate course plan.

SUBSTITUTIONS If you take a higher level class than the prerequisite required most often we can substitute it but not in all cases. Please verify with a UVU pre-nursing counselor before proceeding. In some instances if you receive a B- grade you can substitute a higher grade from a higher level class such as ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2020. All substitutions must be cleared by a UVU pre-nursing counselor.

AP CREDIT If a student takes the AP test and the test covers a pre-nursing prerequisite we accept it in most cases pending the department agrees. The score breakdown is as follows: 3= B+ 4= A- 5= A

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT& ASSOCIATES DEGREE It may not be in the best interest of the student to take the prerequisites in high school concurrent enrollment/distance ED; however, the 4 G.E. s: History, Fine Arts, Ethics & Values, and Humanities are not at issue. PLEASE CONTACT THE PRE- Nursing COUNSELOR. It may not be in the best interest of the student to get an associates degree because the nursing program is very specific and does not need the additional credits. Remember students compete for scholarships with students that are taking less difficult classes. Please counsel w/ H.S. Advisor.

Although every applicant pool is different, the competitive average GPA is 3.77 to 3.81. In our last two pools of applicants, the mean GPA was a 3.76. The breath of the G.P.A. has been a 3.5-4.0. Only the prerequisite courses are used for the GPA. If a course is repeated the second grade is factored whether higher or lower.

To obtain a voucher to take the TEAS test, contact the Pre-Nursing Counselor. This test can be taken once per application period, but a maximum of twice in 5 years, if a new version is implemented by then, that version will be required for all applicants. We currently use version V. The TEAS test consists of 4 content areas, which include: Reading Math Science English Visit www.atitesting.com for more information and study materials.

The average TEAS scores are: Reading English 88 79 Comprehensive Mathema7cs Science 82 84 79 Each of these scores are awarded a point value which is used in compiling the points for applica7on. Each student is required to obtain a 50% score in every area to be eligible for UVU s nursing program. If you have taken it twice within 5 years you must choose which test you will submit. You are only allowed one test abempt per applica7on period. We will not allow an applicant to mix and match scores. We are currently using version V.

Applications for Fall Semester Opens 3rd Monday in April Closes 3rd Friday in May by 4 p.m. Applications for Spring Semester Opens 3rd Monday in August Closes 3rd Friday in September by 4 p.m. During these time periods, applications will be available from the UVU Nursing website at www.uvu.edu/csh/nursing. In order to be complete, applications must include all appropriate transcripts and TEAS Test results.

INTERVIEW The interview is a process that may include but is not limited too: A group interview, Individual interview(s) and A writing sample If chosen to interview, you should plan on about two hours. A student can only interview twice within 5 years.

Interview Continued Come dressed professionally Be familiar with the emotional and physical aspects of being a nurse Practice your interview skills @ the CDC (Career Development Center) Be teachable Be yourself Be ready to interact

Requirements if Accepted after Interview Admission to the UVU Nursing program is contingent upon satisfactory results of both a federal criminal background check and a drug screen. Information on how to obtain both reports will be provided upon acceptance. The Department of Nursing has sole discretion to deny acceptance based on information contained in either of these two reports.

UVU s nursing school structure 3 in 1 program ASN to BSN Completion The accepted nursing students will take 4 semesters Fall & Spring to complete their ASN degree. Then they will apply with the State of UT for their NCLEX and if they pass they will receive their RN license. Once this is complete UVU will allow the New RN to seamlessly transition into the BSN. If you stop school you would be required to reapply to the BSN.

UVU Nursing Program You should expect to spend about two to three days a week in classes and two days a week completing your clinicals. The clinicals can be at a facility south of Provo to north Salt Lake City. Placements and classes are not flexible in times and locations. You should expect to spend at minimum 40 hours a week between your classes, clinicals, and studying.

Summer Semesters Nursing students can choose to take a break, They can choose to complete some of the non nursing classes to complete their ASN or BSN or classes they want to take for personal reasons or a minor. They can choose to go to a foreign country with UVU and other nursing students such as Samoa and Ukraine.

Summation Complete the prerequisite courses with a B- grade or higher. For eligibility, prerequisite courses can only be repeated one time within a 5 year time span. Take the TEAS Test. Submit the application, with a copy of the TEAS and a copy of your transcripts (If not in UVU history) on or before the published application deadline to the pre-nursing counselor. Expect UVU email informing you if you are being asked to interview for the up to 40 available positions. You must be available when the interview is scheduled. (No Exceptions)

QUESTIONS If you ever have any questions about UVU s nursing program no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please ask a pre-nursing counselor!

Important Information There are many misconceptions shared throughout the community about UVU s nursing program and some how considered by many to be fact without basis from the UVU nursing program. If you choose to follow the advice of a non-uvu pre-nursing counselor then you are choosing to take a risk of not becoming a nurse at UVU or prolonging your possible acceptance.

In support of your desire to become a nurse and to help you prepare and register for your course work, it is important for you to contact a Pre- Nursing Counselor. Due to the volume of inquiries, email is the preferred contact for general information. Please make an appointment by calling 801-863-6484. Applications are online and TEAS vouchers are given in person. Denise Fullmer fullmede@uvu.edu LC-404a
