Excursion-linked lesson plans and materials Elac Cardiff (Level A1 / A2) Instructions Stage 1 Introduce students to the city of Cardiff. Has anyone been there before? Does anyone know anything about the city? Tell students that they are going to look at 8 facts about Cardiff and the words in the matching task will be in the information. The words are: castle (n) to own (v) bay (n) modern (adj) lake (n) sailing (n & v) visitors (n) views (n) stadium (n) exhibitions (n) popular (adj) cathedral (n) religious (adj) practical (adj) experiments (n) theatre (n) In pairs, the students complete the matching task. Make sure that a) the words are understood and b) they can be properly pronounced. Focus, too, on word class. Stage 2 In this activity, students work as a class but they get the information they need individually. You will need to go around the class checking that they understand the activity, that they are doing it correctly and that they are not having problems with the vocabulary. It is not necessary to understand all of the vocabulary to complete the task. How the activity works 1) Each student has a piece of information (1-8). Therefore, for a class of 16 students there will be 2 copies of each fact. 2) Students start by copying their own fact on to their blank worksheet in the correct space (e.g., fact No. 1 is about Cardiff Castle) 3) Students then move freely around the class swapping pieces of information with each other until their worksheet is complete. The Rules a) Students can only speak in English. b) Students cannot copy the information from other students, it must be dictated. The activity is finished when the first student finishes i.e. all the information is completed. To give the other students the chance to complete the activity, early finishers could be given the teachers sheet (minus the Quick Quiz) to check their answers, spellings etc. is going on too long, stop it and elicit the information from the class as a whole. Plenary (10-15 minutes) When they have all completed the task, read the facts through as a class. Give as many students as possible the opportunity to read. Do the Quick Quiz with them to see how much information they remember. (The Quick Quiz could also be done the following lesson to reinforce some of the information in preparation for their trip to Cardiff.) All the students need to have a copy of the facts for their excursion.
