1 Energy The Co-operative s Green Schools Revolution LESSON PLAN KS1: Duelling fuels! Fossil fuels versus renewable energy. SUGGESTED TIME: 60 MINS Age group No. of pupils in cohort Classroom support (to be completed by teachers) This lesson will introduce children to fossil fuels and renewable energy. It highlights the need for change as fossil fuels deplete and looks at alternatives like wind power. Learning objectives To understand that most of our energy comes from fossil fuels. To know that there are different forms of energy. To know that some energy is renewable and some isn t. Success criteria I can name a source of renewable energy. I know that energy comes from fossil fuels. I can show/tell you about fossil fuel. Curriculum links England En1: Speaking and listening To speak clearly, fluently and confidently to different people, pupils should be taught to: c organise what they say; d focus on the main point(s); e include relevant detail; f take into account the needs of their listeners; 4a make observations about where things are located and about other features in the environment. The effects of positive and negative changes globally and how we contribute to some of these changes. 3 Energy The Co-operative s Green Schools Revolution LESSON PLAN KS1: Duelling fuels! Fossil fuels versus renewable energy. Teaching activities Introduction (WALT) using appropriate pupil language. This lesson will introduce children to fossil fuels and renewable energy. It highlights the need for change as fossil fuels deplete and looks at alternatives like renewable energy. Show children how a simple wind turbine works using the resources. Explain that wind is a source of renewable energy. Explain that there are other types of renewable energy, such as solar energy and hydroelectric (water) energy, and that these are safe and do not harm the planet. Tell children about fossil fuels coal, oil and natural gas. All three were formed many hundreds of millions of years ago, before the time of the dinosaurs. Explain that we have used far too much fossil fuel and that we are running out. Also explain that the use of fossil fuels is also harming our planet. Read the elements from the fossil-fuel timeline (worksheet 1) out loud for children and challenge them to put them in sequence. Development Independent, paired and group activity Pair the children into talk partners to discuss what they think the advantages and disadvantages of using fossil fuels and renewable energy are. Discuss as a class, listing advantages and disadvantages on the whiteboard. Differentiated activities SEN/G&T Using Worksheet 1, lower-ability children to role-play activity on the journey of fossil fuels. Middle- ability children to work in a group led by an adult, plotting the different stages of fossil fuels. Higher-ability children in groups of four to use worksheet 1 to sequence the different stages of fossil fuels without assistance. Plenary Children to show the rest of the class the results of their activity. Explain to children that the human race has overused fossil fuels and that they are running out. Not only that but they are also harming our planet. How do they feel about this? AfL assessment opportunities (WILF) Ask children to describe the journey of fossil fuel. Can children name a type of renewable energy? Extension/ homework Using the internet or library, pupils should research what impact fossil-fuel use is having on our planet.

Follow-up lessons Pupils make their own windmills using the template provided. They can then go outside with them to see what effect the wind has upon them. If possible, visit The Co-operative wind farm or other wind farms in your area. Visit to find out more and book a trip. Whole-school activity Set up a Green Schools Revolution committee in your school and look at ways in which you can save energy. Conduct an Energy audit. Create a campaign to reduce energy and water consumption in your school. Don t forget to enter the Green Schools Revolution national multimedia competition at:

We use electricity to watch TV, play computer games, and do many other things. Coal, gas and oil are transported to a power station, where they are made into energy, which then turns an electricity generator. Oil and gas are made from the remains of tiny fish and plants which sank to the bottom of the sea or water they were living in millions of years ago. By drilling on land or under the sea, we can find gas and oil and use pipelines to collect it. Gas and oil is used to heat our homes. The coal we mine on land today is made from ancient dead plant material. Energy: worksheet
