10 Our History 1927 Volvo is founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, who decide to create safe vehicles of high quality. The first passenger car is manufactured in Gothenburg and in the following year, the first truck an instant success. In the following decades, Volvo grows into a Group and a number of operations come into existence: the manufacture of car, marine and industrial engines, buses, construction equipment and components for the aircraft industry. A series of company acquisitions in various industry segments further strengthens the Group.

11 Our History 1999 Volvo Cars is sold to the Ford Motor Company. 2001 Volvo Group acquires Renault Trucks and Mack Trucks. 2007 The Volvo Group acquires Nissan Diesel (currently known as UD Trucks). 2007 The Volvo Group acquires Lingong, Chinese manufacturer of construction equipment. 2008 Establishment of joint venture company with Eicher Motors. 2012 The aerospace component company Volvo Aero is sold to the British engineering group GKN.

20 Company Chronology 1981 AB Volvo buys manufacturing assets from White Motor Company and forms Volvo White Truck Corporation. 1988 AB Volvo and General Motors jointly form Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. Volvo owns 87% interest in the company. 1997 AB Volvo purchases remaining shares of Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. from General Motors and renames company Volvo Trucks North America. 2012 Volvo Group restructures sales and marketing activities as well as product offerings by regions, and Volvo Trucks in North America becomes part of the Americas region.
