III. MTB Orienteering abroad The history of Mountain bike orienteering relates to the mass production of mountain bikes in the late 1980s in countries where mountain biking became a popular outdoor sport. Within a decade 12 national championships were organized by different countries. By 2009, the number of the events increased to 58 countries, which indicates a growing popularity of this newborn branch of orienteering sport. IV. MTB Orienteering in the Czech Republic The Czech Republic actually pioneered the advancement of MTB Orienteering. In 1990 the first MTB Orienteering competitions documented were organised and in 1993 informal national championship was held in the Czech Republic. These events necessitated a special MTB Orienteering committee formation as an official part of the Czech Orienteering Federation. Since 1994 the Czech MTB Orienteering Cup has been established and the Czech national team has taken part in MTBO events abroad. In 2007 the World MTB Orienteering Championship was held in the Czech Republic in Nové Město na Moravě. Mountain bike orienteering has become recently a regular TV sport. The Czech TV has prepared a number of high-quality TV productions, for example from the National championship 2007, and every year a TV audience can watch regular 30-minute TV recordings from the World championships. Recently, MTB Orienteering has become more visible due to the fact that information from mountain bike orienteering events has also often coverage on TV news and thus has been brought to public notice. The organisers of WMTBOC 2015 have close co-operation with the national TV Company to have live coverage of the event. More information about Czech MTBO, competition calendar, latest news and information about national as well as world events is available at www.mtbo.cz. V. The Czech MTB Orienteering national team In all branches of orienteering sport, the Czech Republic, in tough foreign competition, has good representation and successes, winning a number of world championship titles. So far the Czech Republic national teams have won 23 medals at world MTB Orienteering Championships. At the 2012 World MTB Orienteering Championships in Hungary Marek Pospíšek won silver medal in sprint and Jan Svoboda took bronze in middle. In the same year, one of the greatest talents, Kryštof Bogar from a sport club OK Jiskra Nový Bor, has become a three-time junior champion. At the European MTB Orienteering Championships in Zamocs (Poland, 2013) the Czech national team won three bronze medals thanks to Jiří Hradil (midlle, long) and Martin Ševčík, Jan Svoboda and Vojtěch Stránský who made up bronze in men s relay. The Czech junior national team was also successful, winning 13 medals. At the WMTBOC 2015 in home terrain, the Czech national team will hopefully increase the number of the medals earned so far. VI. The Liberec Region and Liberec The Liberec Region lies in the North of the Czech Republic on the border of three countries The Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. The region s landscape includes four attractive tourist areas Českolipsko (the Česká Lípa region), Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise), Jizerské hory (the Jizera Mountains) and Krkonoše (the Giant Mountains). This location offers visitors a range of places of interest, and a wide choice of cultural and sports events. The attractive regions of Bohemian Paradise and Česká Lípa are typical for their rock formations, castles, chateaus and religious monuments. The Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains are the region s main winter resorts; the most famous of which are ski resorts Bedřichov, Harrachov, Rokytnice nad Jizerou etc. In summer there are great opportunities for lovers of cycling, hiking and mountain climbing. MTB enthusiasts can take a ride up the bike route Singltrek pod Smrkem, which begins in Nové Město pod Smrkem in the northern part of the Jizera Mountains. The Liberec Region can be characterised as an industrial region. Glassmaking, jewellery production, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing industries with close ties to automobile production are the main industrial branches. The Liberec Region is named after its capital city Liberec, which is located in a valley between the Ještěd Ridge and the Jizera Mountain. It is the fifth-largest city in the Czech Republic with 100 000 inhabitants. Liberec is a city with a long and glorious history. It enjoyed its greatest prosperity in the 18th century, when it became the largest manufacturing city in the Kingdom of Bohemia and ranked in importance just beneath Prague. In Liberec, there are so many choices so it is hard to decide what to do first. Liberec s prominent buildings worth seeing are the neogothic Town Hall, the Regional Gallery, the Museum of Northern Bohemia and the Ještěd Tower (1968) upon the Ještěd Mountain. The project for this original construction in the shape of a rotating hyperboloid was designed by the architect Karel Hubáček and awarded the prestigious Perret s prize. The building, housing a communications tower and a hotel with a restaurant, was opened on 21. 9. 1973, and has become a symbol of the city. More information about the whole region and the city can be found at www.liberecky-kraj.cz/en/ or www.visitliberec.eu. The Ještěd Tower, a symbol of the city Liberec
