4 RCSI Postgraduate Prospectus RCSI INSTITUTE OF LEADERSHIP The RCSI has been developing leaders in medicine and healthcare since its foundation in 1784. In 2005, we established the Institute of Leadership, Ireland s only third level institution dedicated exclusively to developing the leadership, management and educational capacity of health professionals and their organisations. Whilst the Institute is an accredited academic institution, we maintain close connections with the worlds of healthcare delivery and higher education and our programmes are flexibile, responsive, practical and use a blended learning approach that allows our students to progress their studies while continuing to work. The Institute has campuses in Dublin, Bahrain and Dubai and we also deliver programmes in Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Approximately 475 health professionals are registered annually on our MSc programmes in leadership, management, education, quality, patient safety and organisational development, with an equal number taking our professional development courses. For more information please visit www.rcsileadership.org. Dr. Fiona Magee, graduate of the MSc in Leadership in Health Professions Education with her father, Mr Declan Magee, President RCSI 2014-2016.

RCSI Postgraduate Prospectus 5 WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE Professor Ciarán O Boyle Director of RCSI Institute of Leadership Welcome to the Institute of Leadership. Here we believe that excellent management skills can be developed and that leadership is something that can be learned. The philosophy of the Institute is that leadership, management and educational competencies can be developed by everyone. We also believe that, in order to improve patient care, we must develop organisations in which leadership is widely distributed. Over 475 doctors, nurses, pharmacists, scientists, allied health professionals, researchers and administrators are registered on the Institute s Masters programmes at any given time with many more taking our professional development programmes. They work in hospitals, community-based healthcare, government agencies, academic and research institutions or pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical devices companies. They are at early, middle or senior stages in their careers and usually, but not always, have responsibility for managing others. We also believe that, in order to improve patient care, we must develop organisations in which leadership is widely distributed. Our typical course participant is proactive, open to exploring new ways of learning and thinking, is keen to learn from and share their experience with others, and is motivated to develop themselves and their organisations in order to improve the delivery of healthcare to patients and education to students.

6 RCSI Postgraduate Prospectus OUR PROGRAMMES Characteristics of Our Programmes L E A D E R Leadership Thread Each of our programmes has a leadership thread where the focus is on developing you as a leader. Experienced Healthcare Professionals Our faculty are experienced healthcare professionals who can relate directly to the challenges of delivering modern healthcare. Action Learning & Action Research These are core to our teaching and learning. We believe that there is no action without learning and no learning without action. The MSc in Healthcare Management was the best investment I have recently made. At a personal and professional level, the course has helped me provide better services to my patients and widened my horizon for pursuing better career options as a manager and team member. The lecturers and administrative staff were amazingly helpful and the course was delivered professionally Dr. Maryam Al Araimi, Dental Surgeon, Graduate of the MSc in Healthcare Management. Our programmes are: Part-time, flexible and modular allowing you to continue working while studying. Delivered through blended learning which combines the best of classroom-based learning and elearning. Accredited by the National University of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland so that your qualification is recognised internationally. Structured by action learning which helps develop your capacity to innovate by applying theory, practice and reflection. Underpinned by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Delivered by experienced health professionals. Supported by, in some modules, psychometric assessments that contribute to your personal and professional development. Structured so that you can take up to five years from registration to complete your MSc degree. Structured so that you may take, and get credit for, a single module, three modules (Certificate), six modules (Postgraduate Diploma) or six modules and an action research project (MSc degree).

RCSI Postgraduate Prospectus 7 ENHANCING YOUR CAREER PROSPECTS Most professional bodies now require their members to engage in continuing professional development. Improving one s leadership and management capability is seen as integral to this. Because healthcare is now so complex and changing so rapidly, health professionals must be capable of contributing to the ongoing development of their organisations. Employees in healthcare will increasingly require, not only basic professional clinical or administration qualifications, but will also need a range of leadership and management competencies. Our programmes provide the opportunity for the development of professional and personal competencies and qualities. A recent evaluation of our programmes by our MSc graduates (Pitman, 2013) 1 found that: 96% had learned to apply principles from the programme to new situations at work. 94% found their University experience very worthwhile. 94% gained confidence to try out new ideas. 94% had developed their problem-solving skills. 86% agreed that the programme improved their skills in written communication. 1 Pitman (2013). Evaluation of MSc programmes taken at the RCSI Institute of Leadership.

8 RCSI Postgraduate Prospectus ENHANCING YOUR CAREER PROSPECTS Prof. Freddie Wood, Irish Medical Council, (fl). Prof Jim Spilane, School of Education and Social Policy Northwestern University (fr). Tomás O Ruairc, CEO, The Teaching Council (bl), and Prof. David Coughlan, Trinity College, Dublin (br), at a recent 3U Leadership Symposium. Employers now look for additional capabilities both in new recruits and in those seeking promotion. Our programmes provide you with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours that significantly increase your capacity to contribute to your organisation s development. The practical nature of the programmes means that you quickly learn how to apply your new knowledge and skills to bring about real change in your organisation. As one Irish hospital CEO said recently: The change in our staff who are taking this programme is extraordinary. Individuals, who would never have previously stepped up to take the lead in solving problems, are now looking for opportunities to do so. The impact of having a critical mass of mid-line personnel who are undertaking this education, on the organisational development of the hospital, cannot be overstated. Irish Hospital CEO, 2012.
