Welcome to Ecole Nationale de Météorologie
ENM : École Nationale de la Météorologie Higher education and professional training in meteorology and related sciences
From early days 1855 : Creation of the French national meteorological service within Paris Observatory by Le Verrier 1922 : Creation of a dedicated centre for meteorological training in Saint-Cyr 1948 : Creation of the Ecole de la Météorologie (Saint-Cyr and Paris), part of the research and training branch of the national meteorological service 1954 : First accreditation to issue «Ingénieur»(Master of Engineering) grades 1969 : The college becomes independent from the research branch and is renamed Ecole Nationale de la Météorologie (E.N.M.) 1982 : The ENM and the CNRM (Research) are the first NMS branches to be relocated from Paris to Toulouse 1988 : First accreditation to issue Master of science degrees (with Toulouse University) 1995 : EU-funded EUROMET project (Computed Aided Learning CAL - ENM program manager) 2006 : The ENM is certified ISO 9001:2000 compliant renewed ISO 9001:2008 in 2009 2009 : ENM joins Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (INPT)
to our days ENM is the department of the French national meteorological service, Météo-France, in charge of : Initial training Technical staff of Météo-France Ministry of Defense 's meteorological specialists Contribution to the training of staff of foreign meteorological services Engineers and specialists ( Master of sc.) in atmospheric physics, meteorology, climatology and connected sciences Continuous training Professional training in meteorology and climate Continuous training of Météo-France's staff, in all fields Recruitment to achieve one of the missions of Météo-France, education and training
A supporting environment ENM is part of a large campus, unique in Europe, dedicated to meteorology and related applications («la Météopole») bringing together : Météo-France operational branches (Forecasting, Observation, IT, Business, Climatology), research and training The new meteorological support centre for French Armies (CISMF) The European Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Scientific Computing (CERFACS) The French National Centre for Hydrometeorology and Support to Floods Forecasts (SCHAPI) It benefits from Toulouse leadership in the aeronautical and space industry and of its renowned quality of life.
A few figures* * from ENM Annual report 2010 80 people, among them37 permanent teachers, including: 3 at ENAC (Civil Aviation School, Toulouse); 2 at the Air force academy (Ecole de l Air, Salon) 1 at the Navy academy (Ecole Navale, Lanveoc) 300 non-enm teachers 200 students(initial training) 12 200 trainee.daysof professional training have been organised or supervised by the ENM for Météo-France staff on average, each Météo-France staff has been trained for 3.4 days in 2010 1 700 trainee.days have been delivered to non- Météo-France staff (public and private companies, other met services, MFI projects support) Annual budget : 8M

Continuous training Annually organized training courses In English : Weather forecasting in mid-latitude regions (10 days) Climatology, a step toward climate services (10 days) In French : Climate Change Statistics for climatology Tropical meteorology Modular course in meteorology Satellite Meteorology for forecasters Organisation and methods of weather forecasting in MF Radar transmitter and receiver Control of an Eumetcast acquisition station Catalogue on website www.enm.meteo.fr
Research and associated laboratories Close collaboration between ENM and CNRM (Centre national de Recherches Météorologiques), departement of Meteo-France in charge of Research (250p) CNRM research groups in cooperation with CNRS Marine meteo Snow studies Modelisation and data assimilation for prediction Experimental and instrumental meteo Large scale meteo and climate Medium scale meteo ENM : 4 permanent teacher-researchers, working with CNRM, but also with P.Sabatier University (statistics) and with CIRED( A lot of courses given a ENM by experts from CNRM 10% of students in PhD after ENM Large offer of PhD (see CNRM site)
Training materials Library 11.000 books annual budget : 18.000 cooperation with INPT started in 2010 : Common rules for lending and manage resources. Present action in order to share a portal for online reviews. Books publishing ENM in charge of «cours et manuels»set : 18 issues on different topics dealing with meteorology Written by ENM teachers or Meteo-France experts Sold by Meteo-France and by bookshops Books written for outside publishers : ENM takes part to different actions as writing and rereading. Support to French ministry of Education, for scientific programsoriented to colleges teachers training (Science à l'ecole) on-line presentations
NTICs and distance learning On line Library Based on AliaCMS, next on Nuxeo New system under development in cooperation with INPT Contains all ENM's training materials Open to all Meteo-France, next to everybody, through identification system Virtual College Based on Moodle Practical documents ( planning, presentations, training programs ) Support for distant learning Distant learning Participation since 2005 to Eumetcal program (e-learning on meteo, built by different countries, delivered to European meteorologists) ex : aeronautic meteorology Sessions on Climate Change (mix of synchronous and asynchronous courses, with personal work and forum, animated by tutors) Session on Java specialisation
Students mobility International Relations non imposed, but encouraged (end of studies projects in foreign countries, trainings) mainly in Research laboratories ( Australia, United States, New Zealand, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Canada) double degree with EHTP (Casablanca) Teachers mobility conventions, bilateral programmes or international contracts Regularly with Algeria, Morocco, Niger Linked to the commercial activities of MFI ( 2010 : India ; 2012: Indonesia) regular contribution to international seminars otr international projects Globaly speaking mainly in the framework of meteorological international cooperation to be developed, through Erasmus partnership, effective in September 2012 INPT IR dynamic
