4 Baptist Tabernacle and Infirmary Training School for Nurses Class of 1 904
Dedication Our nursing school was originally called Baptist Tabernacle and Infirmary Training School for Nurses. The school opened in 1902 and accepted ten students into its first class. Only four students - Alma Gardner, Grace Attaway, Stella Taylor, and Kate Endress- completed the program. In 1906 the school became a three year nursing program and has remained a three year program until now. The Georgia Baptist Hospital charter, written in March of 1913, granted its institution the right ''to elect offices, employ a superintendent and nurses with the power to confer degrees and diplomas". The dream that Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing would become a college, granting a bachelor of science degree to its graduates, has come true. This fall quarter of 1989 the first students of the BSN program of Georgia Baptist College of Nursing began classes. Georgia Baptist has been noted throughout its history for the quality of the nurses it has produced. This excellence will continue as the same emphasis will be placed on a philosophy of Christian love, concern, and caring. That original class of 1904 was a first, as we, the class of June 1993, will be a first. For this reason we would like to dedicate this annual to the class of 1904, our heritage. rs. Charlotte Stephenson, a faculty member, who is also a very dedicated nurse states, ''The question has been asked, why did I choose to be a nurse? In reflecting on the guestion several thoughts came to mind. First and foremost was the Christian commitment of all areas of my life to God, which included a vocational choice. This choice to me was to be a nurse. Because the commitment came early in my life, I chose to work as a nursing assistant in a rural Texas hospital to confirm the choice. As I met and cared for individuals who had real needs, the commitment to caring for others became more found". Mrs. Charlotte Stephenson teaches a class of beginning nursing students.
