Veterinary Anatomy in each Vet School
Subject: Veterinary Anatomy Basic divisions: Gross Anatomy, Histology, Embryology Additional courses : Comparative Anatomy, Topographic Anatomy, Animal Biology (partly) Subjects in Veterinary Anatomy and their credits Teaching Subject National USK IPB UGM UNAIR UNUD Comparative Anatomy Animal Biology* - - 2* 2 2 2* Gross Anatomy 8 6 6 4 5 6 Histology 4 4 4 4 3 4 Embryology 2 2 2 2 2 2 Topographic/ Surgical Anatomy / Applied Anatomy - 2 3 1-1 14 14 15+2* 13 12 13+2*
Main Textbooks Sisson-Grossman : Anatomy of the Domestic Animals Dellman-Brown : Veterinary Histology Lectures/Practical Class Lecture hours : depend on credits Practical class: 1 time/week @ 3 hours Total week in 1 semester : 16 weeks UGM IPB Specimens Comparative anatomy : lab animals, fresh samples Gross anatomy : formalin fixed sheep/goat or dog (UNUD) Wet/dipped : USK, IPB, UNAIR, UNUD Cold storage : UGM Topographic anatomy : formalin fixed horse (IPB) Histology : Paraffin sections Embryology : Fixed/fresh organs, histological specimen
IPB, Bogor The only Vet School in Indonesia to use horse in the Topographic and Surgical Anatomy Histology and Embryology : more advanced
Gajah Mada University, Yogyakarta Teaching in gross anatomy is taking advantages by the use of cold room for formalin embalmed carcass, therefore minimizes the use and the inconveniences of formalin
Udayana, Denpasar The only Vet School to use dogs as models in the teaching of Gross Anatomy Training of Udayana staffs in IPB, Bogor
Airlangga, Surabaya Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh Similar in general with those of IPB, but Topographic Anatomy is served as an elective course in Airlangga. In Syiah Kuala the subject has just been started (goat).
SWOT Analysis of the Present Condition

Basic science Globalization Only 5 Vet Schools Collaboration Development of livestock industry Weakness Developed rigidly Difficult subject Less communications Limited budget Limited publication Non conducive condition Traditional learning system Threats Foreign vets Less recognition on Vet profession
Plans for Future Development
The development of Veterinary Anatomy is closely related with the whole development of Veterinary Education Year 2003 onward Indonesia enters the era of Globalization Vet Graduates: Skillful, professional, young, able to communicate in English The development of National University as autonomy entities (corporate, effectiveefficient) SWOT analysis New Paradigm Veterinary profession: New emerging diseases, public health, new diagnostic procedures, accreditation Learning Methods TCL based SCL based Domains: cognitive, affective psychomotor, social Development of Curriculum and Management of Vet School etc
Future development Development of Veterinary Anatomy Learning approaches Integrated method of teaching, Integrated laboratories Special Course on certain topics, Continuing education, co-curricular activity Development of research through postgraduate study

Research Grants Government agencies Riset Unggulan Terpadu (RUT) Riset Unggulan Terpadu Internasional (RUTi) Hibah Bersaing (HB) Hibah Tim Pasca Competitive Grants for Young Scientist Private agencies Toray Scientific Foundation NGO s Self Funding University Personal (For Anatomy), Up to 2005 IPB is still the only to get the competitive grants from the Government
Strengthening the Research in Veterinary Anatomy 1. Development of man power by training/ study abroad 2. Regular course in advance techniques (histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, tissue culture, molecular biology, embryology) for young staffs (IPB, UGM) 3. Training in laboratory techniques for technicians and young staffs of all the vet school (IPB) 4. Incubatory system for the smaller, USK and UNUD (IPB) 5. Strengthening the collaboration in research work among Indonesian vet schools or between the Indonesian and the international vet schools 6. Encouraging scientific environments as well as empowerment of Indonesian Anatomist Associations
Thank you very much for kind attention Warm greetings from Indonesia We are looking forward for a further mutual collaborations Acknowledgement Special thanks to the Japan Association of Veterinary Anatomist (JAVA) for generous support and excellent preparation for this valuable meeting
