Preface The aim of this volume is to provide protocols for isolating and maintaining human adult stem cells in culture and methods for directing differentiation into specialized cell types. Human adult stem cells from each tissue are potentially capable of differentiating into all the cell types within that tissue. Consequently there is considerable interest in using these cells for the treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions. Careful consideration needs to be given to the relative value of embryonic (described in Human Cell Culture Volume 6), induced pluripotential stem cells and adult stem cells. The development and optimization of techniques for growing human adult stem cells are crucial for the clinical application of these cells and are the focus of this volume. v
