2 Executive Summary The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) is a national, not-for-profit, fee-for-service organization that provides medical students, residents and faculties with an electronic application service and match for entry into postgraduate medical training throughout Canada. CaRMS is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of stakeholders in Canadian medical education. The 2013 Match Report is made available to the public by CaRMS for informational purposes related to the first and second iterations of the 2013 match. The 2013 Match Report provides information to faculties of medicine and applicants on match trends and results, as well as results from previous years matches. The 2013 Match Report also provides details about CaRMS, as well as characteristics of the match process. A record number of medical graduates matched to residency training programs in Canada this year. A total of 3,169 medical graduates were matched in the 2013 R-1 Main Residency Match and will begin their postgraduate training on July 1, A total of 2,645 Canadian medical graduates (CMGs) were matched to residency programs; 94% of all CMGs participating in the match. A total of 499 international medical graduates (IMGs) matched to residency training positions, an increase of 23% from This group represents 21% of all IMGs in the match. Other highlights of the 2013 R-1 Main Residency Match include: The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) had a 98.2% match rate in the first iteration, the highest out of all 17 schools across Canada. This is the first year in CaRMS history in which more IMGs (2,962) participated in the match than CMGs (2,837). 98 couples matched in the first iteration. The percent of applicants choosing family medicine as a first choice was at a 20-year high, with 36% of applicants choosing the discipline. Interest in family medicine has steadily increased since 2003.
