Introduction The INSET for Assessing the Cross-Curricular Skills 2012/13 comprises of a new Using ICT section which has been added to the existing Assessing the Cross-Curricular Skills online course. It is designed to introduce and familiarise teachers with the Levels of Progression that they must use to describe and report on pupils progress in Using ICT. Your role As facilitator, you are not expected to be a subject expert on Using ICT. Your role is to: ensure that all logistical arrangements are made so that in the time allocated, participants can complete the Using ICT training. encourage full participation; help keep participants on track so that the goals can be achieved in the time allotted; make arrangements for the logistics of offline training activities; report any issues and concerns identified by the participants in your school to CCEA. Preparation checklist for Using ICT Training Ensure that each participant has a C2k username and password Facilitator has logged into the online course in school and played two Using ICT videos from start to finish before other staff take the course.* (The table of content shows where these are located.) Computer for each participant with internet access Printer available to print out instruction /activity sheets Headphones for each participant All C2k software updates have been completed Teachers support ring binder for each member of staff Using ICT Assessment Guidance booklet for each member of staff Planning of arrangements for two offline activities completed * This action is essential to facilitate the smooth running of course videos for other participants in school. You may notice that when you as the facilitator play the videos for the first time there may be breaks in play. However, once this is done, the course videos will be downloaded on to the school network and this should prevent them stuttering or being slow to load for other users. Please note that you should do this no more than one week before other staff watch the videos as the files will not remain permanently on the school network. It is best to do this when other computers in school are not being used. You can check if the videos have downloaded properly by playing them one more time yourself. If you notice any problems at this point please contact the C2k helpdesk. 3
Planning for training You should plan a whole school approach to covering the online content for Using ICT. You may find it useful to preview the Using ICT content before deciding how best to facilitate the training for your colleagues. The content table in this booklet shows the structure of this new section (Section 6) with approximate timings for guidance. Most teachers in Northern Ireland have already used this online course to receive training in statutory assessment of Communication and Using Mathematics so the majority of those using the course for training in 2012/13 will only need to complete the Using ICT section (Section 6). However, if there are teachers in your school who have never used the course before, we recommended that they complete Sections 1-3 before the date you have decided on for whole school training in Using ICT. Online reflection/collaboration Some activities and pages in Section 6 are appropriate either for independent study or could be completed by larger groups or a whole staff together using an interactive whiteboard or data projector/speakers. Offline group activities It is recommended that, however the training is managed in school, all teachers should have the opportunity to work together on the accompanying shared offline activities. This is an important component of this training. It has been provided so that all staff can develop a shared understanding of the standards of Using ICT within the school. The content table indicates the areas of the Using ICT section where there are collaborative offline activities. You will need to download and print instruction and activity sheets for these from the appropriate pages in the course. Technical support If you encounter any technical difficulties, for example, login problems, lack of sound, speed of video playing or pages not loading, please report these to the C2k telephone helpdesk: C2k telephone helpdesk 0870 6011 666 Health and safety considerations Refer to the login guide for advice about health and safety. 4
