But it has a number of inherent characteristics that make it a far from ideal choice. HID lamps typically have rated life of 20,000hrs and at that point lumen (light) output will be reduced to approx 70% and also only 70% of lamps are still functioning. So, overall only 49% of initial light is still present at rated life figure for HID. LED has far higher lumen maintenance and life span, so will keep a higher percentage of initial light for far longer. Also due to the low heat emitted from LED, IP65 high bays are possible without the need for heat resistant glass that can be hazardous in food storage areas. And the LED light output is not affected at low temperatures as in cold stores, so quantities needed are not a high as for HID.
