09680 - CARPET 09680-1 PART ONE: GENERAL 1.1 Description CARPET 1.1.1 Work of this Section, as shown or specified, shall be provided by the Interior Contractor and shall be in accordance with the requirements of the Contract Documents. 1.1.2 Work includes coordinating and installing all Carpeting as indicated on drawings and specifications and as specified herein, including all labor, materials and equipment related to the complete installation. Work shall also include procurement of specified Carpet unless indicated otherwise. 1.1.3 Related work in other Sections: a. Wood Flooring Section 09550. b. Stone Flooring Section 09600. c. Tile Section 09300. d. Resilient Flooring Section 09650 1.2 Submittals 1.2.1 All submittals shall be made according to Section 01300 and as specified herein. 1.2.2 Submit the following to the Consultant for approval prior to installation: a. Two (2) samples of each Carpet pattern, color, quality, and texture specified, of sufficient size that will show one full repeat of any repeated pattern or design, but at least 18" x 18" (450 mm square) in size (minimum), and showing full range of any texture or color variations which may be expected.

09680 - CARPET 09680-2 b. Schedule of required quantities (yardage, rolls, or square yards/meters) of each Carpet material specified; quantities shall include requirements for pattern match. A copy of this schedule shall also be presented to the Owner. c. Installation drawings showing method, sequence, and location of all joints and seams. d. Two (2) samples of each type of carpet pad, trim, accessory, and other material required for proper installation. e. Two (2) copies of Manufacturer's data on Carpet showing that materials comply with requirements of data sheets and specifications, also including installation instructions, floor preparation instructions, and maintenance recommendations for various traffic conditions, cleaning procedures and intervals. 1.2.3 Review of samples will be for evaluation of exact pattern, color, and texture match; compliance with other requirements is the responsibility of the Interior Contractor. Exact color match samples may be submitted after award of bid; however, if samples submitted with bid are not for exact color match evaluation and approval, Manufacturer must provide supporting data and guarantees that exact color match will be achieved and state time frame required. Samples for evaluation of exact color match shall be provided within such time frame and must be approved prior to purchase and installation. Consultants judgement regarding exactness of pattern, color and texture match shall be the determining factor and shall be final. 1.2.4 All Carpet delivered and installed shall match the applicable approved samples. 1.2.5 Test report: Sixty days or sooner if possible, before delivery of Carpet to job site, certified copies of test reports from an independent testing laboratory shall be required. These test reports shall cover all minimum requirements,

09680 - CARPET 09680-3 1.3 Quality Assurance including flammability and static control, as noted in specifications. Accompanying these test reports shall be a certificate of compliance stating that all future deliveries of this same quality carpet shall conform to the specifications, Manufacturer's guarantees, and test reports as submitted. 1.3.1 All Carpet, Carpet pad, and required accessories, shall be installed using experienced, skilled workmen to the highest standard of workmanship. The finished appearance of the installed Carpet shall be free from streaks, wrinkles, mismatched patterns, or any other defects due to faulty workmanship. 1.3.2 All work and materials shall conform to the drawings and specifications; any changes or deviations in materials or methods must be approved by the Consultant. 1.3.3 Carpet and pad shall meet requirements of local and state codes where applicable. Comply with all laws, ordinances, rules and regulations and orders of any public authority having jurisdiction over this part of the work. 1.3.4 All materials used in the fabrication of this work shall be new and the best grade obtainable of their respective types. 1.3.5 Obtain carpeting materials from only Manufacturers who will, when requested, send a qualified technical representative to the project site to advise the Installer of proper installation procedures. 1.3.6 Interior Contractor shall be responsible for securing approval when required from the State Fire Marshall on all materials to be used. A letter from the Fire Marshall's office shall be sent to the Owner indicating such approval where required. 1.3.7 The Interior Contractor shall be responsible for taking

09680 - CARPET 09680-4 accurate job-site measurements for all dimensions related to the work prior to placing orders for carpet. 1.3.8 The Interior Contractor shall examine all conditions pertaining to the installation of Carpet and shall provide all coordination as required to achieve the proper and timely completion of the installation. 1.3.9 The Interior Contractor will not change brands of materials during the course of the work, unless approved by Consultant. 1.3.10 Guarantees: a. Wear: Manufacturer shall guarantee that, excluding stairs, no part of the carpet wearing surface shall wear more than 10% by weight in ten (10) years. b. Static: manufacturer shall guarantee that the carpet will maintain static generation at less than 3.0 KV at 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 20% R.H. throughout the life of the product. b. Appearance: Manufacturer shall guarantee that, excluding normal initial pilling, no abnormal nor objectionable pilling of the carpet will occur. Manufacturer shall state the time frame (2 months, 6 months, etc.) during which this initial normal pilling may be expected to be completed and which such pilling will not occur. 1.4 Product Handling 1.4.1 Use all means necessary to protect the materials of this Section before, during and after installation and to protect the work and materials of all other trades. 1.4.2 In the event of damage, immediately make all repairs and replacements needed to the approval of the Consultant and at no additional cost to the Owner.

09680 - CARPET 09680-5 PART TWO: PRODUCTS 2.1 Manufacturers 2.1.1 Carpet to be manufactured by the Manufacturer(s) specified herein or an approved equal (Section 00100). 2.1.2 Carpet manufacturer shall guarantee that carpet patterns to be manufactured are not registered copyrighted patterns of any other vendor and shall indemnify Consultant and Owner from copyright infringement. 2.1.3 Patterns which are copyrighted by the Consultant are the exclusive property of the Consultant as defined in section and shall not be manufactured for any other project than the one specified herein. All advertisements for these patterns must bear the copyright of the Consultant and the Project Name. 2.2 Materials 2.2.1 Carpet and Carpet pad shall be in the style, pattern, colors and construction as specified herein and as shown on the drawings. Trade names and numbers, where used, are those of Manufacturer indicated and are used for their ease in describing patterns; products which meet or exceed the specifications herein and have been approved per Section 01640 as equal products to the items named are acceptable. 2.2.2 When Carpet is specified as provided "by Owner" or "by others", such Carpet may be substituted with other similar Carpet with no additional cost for installation due to such substitution. Notify Consultant prior to proceeding with any such substitution. 2.2.3 Interior Contractor shall receive Carpet, whether supplied "by Owner", "by others", or by Interior Contractor, and shall immediately upon receipt inspect Carpet for damage, manufacturing defects or flaws and verify type and quantity. Any

09680 - CARPET 09680-6 damage, defects, flaws or discrepancies in type or yardage shall be reported to the Owner immediately and prior to any cutting or installation. 2.2.4 Interior Contractor shall appropriately store, protect, and secure other- or Owner-supplied Carpet until required for installation. 2.2.5 Tackless stripping shall be Robert's "Smoothedge" or approved equal. 2.2.6 Door metals and edge trims shall be clamp-down type with no exposed fastening, unless otherwise specified. Exposed screws or nails are not acceptable. 2.3 Performance 2.3.1 Dye lots: Dye lots shall be as few as possible. For those styles or colors whose total quantity does not exceed Manufacturers standard maximum dye lot yardage, total quantity shall be of one dye lot. For those styles or colors whose total quantity exceeds the Manufacturers standard minimum dye lot yardage, separate dye lots may be used except that separate dye lots shall not be intermixed in one area unless previously approved by Consultant. 2.3.2 Colorfastness: All Carpet shall meet the following minimum requirements: a. Lightfastness - minimum rating of 4.0 after 60 hours, test AATCC-16E. b. Crocking - minimum of 4.0 for wet, dry, and solvent crock, test AATCC-8. c. Cold water bleed - minimum ratings as shown below, test AATCC-107: Rating Stain Scale Rating Change Scale Orlon 4.5 4.5 Dacron 4.5 4.5

Solvent bleeding: minimum rating 4.0, standard test. 2.3.3 Flammability: all Carpet, backing and Carpet pad shall meet all flammability requirements of all local, state, and national applicable codes and standards. 2.3.4 Dimensions stability: Less than 0.02% change - Aachen test. 2.3.5 Carpet and Carpet pad Manufacturer shall supply with his product, certificates indicating fire hazard classifications and test results for same. 2.3.6 Carpet Manufacturer shall supply with his product, manuals describing recommended cleaning and protection methods. 2.4 Surplus Materials 2.4.1 Carpet overrun: On each style, color, pattern and quality Carpet, provide production overrun in excess of the amount necessary to insure complete installation including pattern match.

09680 - CARPET 09680-8 The maximum allowable percentage for this overrun based on carpet type shall be as follows: a. Wilton - approximately 3% overrun. b. Axminster - approximately 5% overrun. c. Machine tufted - 5% overrun. d. Hand tufted - 2% overrun. 2.4.2 Overages and leftovers: All Carpet remnants, scraps or cuttings, shall be bundled and labeled for identification and placed in location as designated by Owner. PART THREE: EXECUTION 3.1 Inspection and Preparation of Surfaces 3.1.1 It is the responsibility of the Interior Contractor to see that surface is properly prepared to receive Carpet as specified. 3.1.2 Installation of Carpet shall not commence until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.1.3 Vacuum substrate immediately prior to Carpet installation, and remove all deleterious substances which would interfere with the installation or be harmful to the work. 3.2 Installation 3.2.1 Carpet shall be installed after all drywall partitions have been installed. 3.2.2 Installation procedures must be in strict accordance with Manufacturer's recommendations and must be guaranteed by Carpet Manufacturer. 3.2.3 Locate all seams only in the locations and directions as approved on installation drawings (see paragraph 1.2.2 c. of this Section). Maintain direction of pattern and texture, including lay

09680 - CARPET 09680-9 of pile. Do not seam weft to warp, except as directed. Locate seams to the maximum practicable out of traffic and minimize seams to the maximum extent possible. 3.2.4 Install the Carpet abutted accurately to all vertical surfaces. Align the lines of carpet as woven, using no fill strips less than 18 inches in width other than specified borders, laying all carpet in the same direction unless specifically approved otherwise by the Consultant. 3.2.5 Extend Carpet under open-bottomed and raised-bottom obstructions, and under removable flanges of obstructions. Extend Carpet into closets and alcoves of rooms indicated to be Carpeted, unless another floor finish is indicated for such space. 3.2.6 Provide cut-outs as indicated for active floor outlets. 3.2.7 All patterned Carpet shall be matched exactly at seams. 3.2.8 Where patterned Carpets with obvious repeats or directional patterns are specified at more than one location per room/area or in more than one related room/area, such Carpets shall be installed so that the placement and orientation of such patterns correspond at the Carpeted areas, unless indicated otherwise on drawings or specifications. 3.2.9 Prior to installation of Carpet, Interior Contractor shall confirm and verify each Carpet material with the Consultant. 3.2.10 The Interior Contractor shall correct any installation defects within a reasonable period of time. 3.3 Installation, Over Pad 3.3.1 Carpet pad shall be installed smooth in all areas with minimum space at tackless stripping. 3.3.2 Tackless stripping shall be securely installed at all perimeters of area to receive carpet.

09680 - CARPET 09680-10 3.3.3 Carpet shall be laid over pad and shall be installed, stretched, and balanced so that all seams are parallel with minimum bows. 3.3.4 Carpet shall be tucked in over pad and tackless stripping under bases, skirting boards, etc. so that there are no exposed edges. 3.3.5 Where carpet does not extend to edge (stain runners, etc.) edges of carpet shall be serged/ bound with same yarn as field color of carpet unless otherwise specified by Consultant to insure finished edges. Note: binding tape is unacceptable. 3.3.6 All woven Carpets are to have hand or machine sewn seams unless otherwise specified, sewn seams are to be reinforced with latex or hot tape. All tufted Carpets are to be seamed with hot tape unless otherwise specified. 3.3.7 Door metals, if required, shall be correctly located and centered under the closed door line. Metal strips shall be secured to the floor with ample fasteners of proper type and size. 3.3.8 Where carpet meets another floor material (i.e., vinyl, tile, quarry tile, terrazzo) concealed metal stripping shall be used with tightest possible joining, except where otherwise specified or detailed in drawings. 3.3.9 Stair treads and nosings shall receive a double thickness of padding, unless otherwise detailed upon drawings. 3.4 Installation, Glue Down 3.4.1 Install Carpet directly over floor using no pad or foam. Installation procedures and adhesives must be in strict accordance with Manufacturer's recommendations. Adhesives must be recommended and guaranteed by Carpet Manufacturer. 3.4.2 Immediately prior to installation of the work of this

09680 - CARPET 09680-11 Section, thoroughly clean all substrate and remove all oil, adhesive, grease, paint, varnish, hardeners, and other items which would adversely affect the bond of adhesive. 3.5 Cleaning and Protection 3.5.1 In addition to the requirements of Section 01710, thoroughly clean all carpet surfaces prior to final acceptance of the carpeted areas by the Owner. a. Remove debris from installation, carefully sorting pieces to be saved from scraps to be disposed of. b. Vacuum carpet with a commercial machine as recommended by Manufacturer. c. All soil marks, flaws or other defects shall be eliminated, removed or repaired as directed by the Owner prior to final acceptance. d. Interior Contractor shall protect the carpet during the remainder of the construction period, so that carpet will be in undamaged and unsoiled condition at the time of acceptance. Manufacturer shall recommend the type of nonstaining cover material that should be used for such protection. 3.5.2 Deliver remaining carpet and scraps to Owner as directed by Paragraph 2.4 in this Section.
