Parker Power Conversion Market Overview Grid Tie/Renewable Energy Parker offers grid tie inverters and related equipment in numerous configurations and sizes for a variety of renewable energy applications in addition to PV solar. Direct drive permanent magnet generators and specialized inverters provide power conversion for wind and wave power. In the growing field of utility scale battery energy storage, Parker provides the PCS (Power Conversion System) and is the industry leader in lithium ion battery-based systems. In addition, Parker manufactures outdoor duty battery enclosures, complete with climate control, fire suppression, and monitoring systems. Energy storage is a natural addition to PV solar installations. It can facilitate the integration of renewable energy with the grid by virtue of its capacity firming and ramp rate control functions. The end result is more efficient utilization and availability. Parker s Energy Grid Tie division is committed to providing reliable and efficient solutions to all facets of the renewable energy market. Industrial Automation For over three decades, Parker SSD Drives Division has been a premier supplier of motor speed controls to the industrial market. In operations around the world, Parker motion controls and variable speed drives facilitate manufacturing processes like lamination, extrusion, die cutting, scoring, and material handling. Additionally, Parker drives provide energy savings in process-related pumping and ventilating. In solar field applications, Parker actuators and controls can position panels with accuracy and repeatability. 2

Description The result of over three decades of experience in power conversion and a commitment to sustainable energy, Parker offers unique solutions for solar power. The Outdoor Solar Inverter is a megawatt class free-standing package designed for utility scale PV solar field applications. A high efficiency design integrates proven IGBT power conversion and low loss powdered metal core inductors with Parker s ground breaking two-phase cooling technology. No air conditioner is required, as the power semiconductors, inductor, and internal ambient air are cooled by Parker s two-phase advanced cooling system. Integrated combiner panel and multiple access panels make installation and scheduled maintenance a breeze. Output power is handled by replaceable phase modules, which are cooled by Parker s advanced 2-phase cooling system, with no fans required. Each module contains IGBT power semiconductors, long life film capacitors, and gate drive circuitry. The easily removable modules weigh only 16 kg (about 35 pounds), and average time to swap is under 15 minutes. Cooling and AC power connections are quick disconnect type, with connections made as module is installed. AC output filters also utilize a modular tray design for easy maintenance. This unique modular construction offers an extremely low MTTR for high system availability. 3

Features Smart Operation The Parker 890GT-S includes features that make it friendly to the grid. Inverter trips and disconnections are minimized in the firmware, ensuring that the inverter remains a valuable asset to the user, and not a liability to the health of the grid during disturbances. - Communications capabilities allow fast and accurate monitoring and control of all inverter functions. - Real and reactive power support enables the inverter to help mitigate voltage excursions, taking the burden off the electric utility s traditional voltage and frequency regulating equipment. - Dynamic VAR injection provides reactive power (Q, measured in VARs) when called upon. In addition to its primary purpose of feeding active power (P, measured in watts) from the solar panels to the grid, the 890GT-S can, within the obvious limitations of rated current and power factor, produce a reactive power component on demand. - Expanded frequency trip point allows continued operation without disconnection during many grid frequency excursions. - Low-voltage ride through capability (LVRT) ensures that the 890GT-S will not trip during transient disturbances, thus avoiding making the situation worse by dropping offline. Visualization/HMI Standard 890GT-S Central Solar Inverters include a Parker 10 industrial hardened workstation as a supervisory HMI. The workstation includes an SVGA display with analog resistive touchscreen, and has a built-in solid state hard drive for fast and reliable data storage. The pre-programmed operating and monitoring screen run on Parker InteractX software for advanced graphics, historical trending, and sophisticated communication capabilities. Control and Diagnostics The HMI is accessible from outside the enclosure, covered by a protective door. The HMI provides a wealth of useful operating data on a real-time basis. Data is presented on a number of concise screens using an easy -to-navigate menu structure. An Electrical Overview screen includes operating mode, inverter output kw or VARs, critical voltages and currents, and solar panel performance data. The Thermal Overview screen takes full advantage of over 60 internal temperature monitoring points, giving the operator an overall view of thermal status. Coolant flow, level, and temperature are closely monitored, as is the speed and status of the fans. Additionally, screens dedicated to alarms and data trending provide for efficient diagnosis and status reports. By virtue of the InteractX software, display screens can be customized for your system, allowing visualization of virtually any operating parameter. Also provided, accessible by an exterior panel, are hardware switches for inverter on/off, local/remote, lighting, and control power, an Emergency Power Off button, and a local communication port. 6

Security The HMI may be set up for an administrator and multiple users, with up to five levels of passcode protected access. Operators, supervisors, and technicians can be provided with access to only the levels that they have the need to work with, without exposing sensitive or critical parameters. InteractX simplifies record keeping compliance by tracking operator input and providing electronic signatures that are easily configured with no special scripting or programming required. The inverter system uses a non-routable private IP, allowing integration with your established firewall. If you are interested in remote access, Parker can recommend a program that includes full encryption, based on RSA private-/public key exchange and AES (256 Bit) session encoding. This technology is based on the same standards as https/ssl. On the hardware level, a heavy gauge steel enclosure with lockable access panels prevents unauthorized tampering or access. Operating Modes Basic operating modes include Grid Parallel (current mode) and Island (voltage mode) Slew rate control for both real and reactive power make the AC890GT-S grid friendly, and MPPT control ensures the maximum energy harvest, even during non-optimum days. Energy Management Modes The 890GT-S includes sophisticated energy management capabilities that allow the user to reap maximum energy output, maintaining performance during grid frequency or voltage excursions, while maintaining compliance with most of today s codes and standards. Voltage Ride-through/Droop Response - In addition to basic low voltage ride-through (LVRT), the 890GT automatically injects available reactive current if line voltage droop is sensed. FqRT/Frequency Ridethrough - Output current is limited for increasing frequency. VAR or Power Factor Control - Command the power factor required. Battery Energy Storage Integration Energy storage is recognized as an enabler for the addition of renewable power sources. By combining storage with generation, a complete grid interactive system is created. Ramp control algorithm for both active power and VARs makes the Parker 890GT-S Solar Inverter easily adaptable to energy storage. With common communication platform and protocols, the inverter may be seamlessly integrated with Parker s 890GT series energy storage PCS. With over 85 Megawatts installed, Parker has a proven track record in energy storage. Systems are not limited to a particular battery chemistry, and are modular in construction for easy transport and deployment. 8

Parker Advanced Cooling System The small footprint and high reliability of the Parker Outdoor Central Solar Inverter is made possible by an advanced cooling system. Parker s exclusive coolant-based system uses a non-conductive, noncorrosive liquid to cool critical components. The refrigerant used in this two phase system requires only 13% of the flow rate of an equivalent water/glycol based system. By capitalizing on the tremendous amount of heat that is transferred as the refrigerant vaporizes, then releasing the heat through a condenser, the cooling system runs efficiently and effectively, without the need for a compressor. Redundant system components will allow inverter operation even after loss of a pump or a fan. (Output may be reduced under certain operating conditions) Compared to air cooling, IGBT temperatures are kept more constant, with less excursions over time. Advanced cooling is used on both the IGBT devices and the high efficiency inductors, as well as with the unique cool door feature, circulating temperature controlled air inside the sealed enclosure. Heat from the coolant loop is removed by an isolated heat exchanger, with no air exchange from the enclosure interior to the outside environment. Heat exchanger fans are variable speed for maximum efficiency. They are designed for redundancy, and are monitored for rotation. In the event of a fan or coolant pump malfunction, the inverter will continue to operate, folding back power if necessary.
