Page 1 of 6 WRIGHT STANDER SPEED-UP KIT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS P/N 98410066: This optional kit is sold as an optional upgrade and may apply to 48, 52 & 61 Standers with serial numbers lower than 11935 that have not previously been upgraded. To determine if the upgrade has previously been performed, check the size of the pump drive pulley. The new pulley has a 5 1/16 outside diameter, whereas the old pulley size was 4 1/2. Note: The Loctite 271 must be used correctly or severe damage may occur to the engine crankshaft as the mower is subsequently used! See below! 1. Use all safety procedures related to working on power equipment and working near cutting blades. a. Find a safe and clean working area. b. Remove the ignition key and disconnect spark plug wires. c. Wear hand and eye protection when working near moving parts. d. Be sure that the machine is secured if it is lifted and the parking brake is engaged. 2. Disconnect the blade clutch wiring connector from the wiring harness. Do not pull on wire to clutch or you could easily break the wire of the clutch. Press on connector detent and hold connector firmly to unplug. 3. Remove the deck cover, loosen the idler adjustment rod nut to reduce blade belt tension, and remove the engine-driven blade belt. 4. Remove the rear pulley guard, which is located above the foot platform. 5. Loosen the nylock nut (#94) that secures the extension spring to the pump idler arm. Loosen the two flange lock nuts (#17) that secure the spring to the tractor body. Note the order of the spring, nuts, washers, and bolts for proper re-assembly. Remove the three nuts, related hardware, and the spring. All numbered parts are shown below. 6. Remove the engine-driven pump drive belt (#81). 7. Being careful not to drop the clutch, remove the blade clutch retaining bolt (#87) and the two associated washers. The blade clutch (#85) should slide out. Remove the clutch from the engine. Page 2 of 6 8. Remove the set screw (#76) on the drive pump pulley (#84) using a 5/32 Allen wrench. The pulley should slide off. Remove the pulley from the engine. 9. Before installing the new pump drive pulley, ensure that the key (#82) is properly seated on the engine drive shaft. The rounded end of the key should mate with the rounded shoulder of the end of the key slot in the engine shaft. 10. Using the enclosed capsule of Loctite 271, apply a thin bead of the adhesive along the entire thread length of the set screw (#76). Failure to properly seat the key could result in damage to the engine drive shaft! 11. Align the new pump drive pulley on the drive shaft with the larger hub towards the engine, and slide the pulley until it seats on the shoulder of the engine drive shaft. While holding the key in place with an appropriate tool, tighten the set screw. If more than 3 complete turns are needed, loosen the set screw, and check the position of the key in the engine drive shaft (see step 9). Reinstall the pulley and tighten the set screw as directed above. 12. Beginning at the threaded end of the blade clutch retaining bolt (#87), apply about a 1 long bead of the Loctite 271 along the thread length. 13. Align the blade clutch on the engine drive shaft and slide it into position. Install the two washers and blade clutch retaining bolt in the proper order. Tighten the retaining bolt to 50 ft-lbs. Reconnect the blade clutch wiring connector to the wiring harness. 14. After verifying the correct positions of the spring, nuts, and washers, install the new extension spring at the pump idler arm, and tighten the nylock nut (#94). Similarly install the other end of the spring at the tractor body, being sure to locate the bolt through the right-most hole on the tractor body, and tighten the two lock flange nuts (#17). Placing the bolt in this position will result in the correct tension for the new pump drive belt installed below in step 15. The bolt may be re-located to one of the two other holes, in the future, should the belt tension need to be adjusted due to routine use. 15. Move the spring-loaded pump idler arm to allow installation of the new pump drive belt. Install the new belt. Reinstall the rear pulley guard. 16. Reinstall the engine-driven blade belt. Tighten the idler adjustment rod nut to adjust the blade belt tension. There should be about ¼ of belt play. Reinstall the deck cover. 17. Reconnect the spark plugs. Wright Manufacturing, Inc. Page 5 of 6 FYI: Hydro Motors Changed to Faster Type For your information: The hydro motors were changed on 48, 52 and 61 Standers to a faster type as of approximately serial #12000 (36 & 42 are not affected). The effect is to increase the speed capability another 1.1 mph in addition to the 0.8 mph increase from the pulley change that was done at the same time, for a total of 1.9 mph increase from original. The speed kit above is intended to allow only the 0.8 mph increase. Wright does not recommend upgrading the motors on the older serial numbers. To confirm which type of motors are on any mower, check the gap between the flat end of the motor and the tractor side wall. The slower motors have a gap of only 1/8. The faster mowers have a larger 3/8 gap. You can check the gap by reaching your hand between the tractor and the wheel motor support. On mowers equipped with the new motors, you should be able to place your fingers well between the end of the motor and the tractor side wall. Be sure you are doing this at the bosses on the motor end and not in the gaps between the bosses. Units with the new motors have an adjustable speed range that is factory-set in the slower position, simulating the previous design. To take advantage of the faster speed range, move the control rods to the fastest hole positions on the control levers, and then reset the tracking adjustment.
