International Composing Competition for a Chamber Opera (or Melologo or Ballet) in one act about classical Greek subject related to the contemporary Organizing Institutions Verona Accademia per l Opera Italiana; Fondazione Arena di Verona ; Greek National Opera of Athens; Magyar Állami Operaház of Budapest; Teatro Amazonas Manaus; Liszt Academy Budapest; Accademia Filarmonica di Verona Istituto Internazionale per l Opera e la Poesia - Unesco Verona; Universal Music Publishing Ricordi Casa Ricordi; With the sponsorship Ministero Italiano dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali; Greek Ministry of Culture; The Competition aims to promote the production of new works of music theatre and dance and support the artistic creativity of young composers through the co-production of their compositions by the theatrical Institutions involved in the project. Announcement Art. 1 All Composers providing that they are under 40 years of age on December 31 th 2009 can participate in the Competition.
Art.2 Works in competition must be unpublished and never performed. Art. 3 The competitions consist in three phases: First: Board of Examiners evaluate opera projects and choose five compositions which will be admitted to second phase; Second: Composers selected by Board must complete and deliver their operas within the time limits. Than Board of Examination pick out two of them to award. Third: Works awarded are published and deliver over to the Theatres where will be performed during their 2010/2011 program (Theatres have the possibility to produce also not awarded works). Art. 4 Competition schedule: 1 st Stage: a) By July 11 th 2009 the applicant must present the enrolment form to the administrative office of the Competition; b) By October 31 st 2009 applicant have to present his opera project, presenting 8 (eight) copies of opera libretto synopsis, 8 (eight) copies of its extract of the score (lasting up max ten minutes). c) By November 30 th 2009 Board of Examiners size up the scripts and choose 5 (five) opera project which will be admitted to the final; d) By December 31 st 2009 Jury Chairman and member of Board of Examination will elucidate finalist composers about complete opera realization according to performance producers designed by Organizing Institutions (orchestra leader, stage director, scenographer, choreographer) designed by organizing Institutions;
2 nd Stage: Within February 27 th administrative office. 2010 composers have to complete their opera and send it to Competition 3 rd Stage: Within March 30 th 2010 Board of Examiners will choose two winner operas. The award ceremony will take place in Teatro Filarmonico di Verona before the first absolute of the winning operas and the schedule of the repeat performances by the other Theatres during 2010/2011 program of performances. The exclusive right of the works will end on December 31 th 2011. Art. 5 Prizes: First prize of 4,000.00 (four thousand), to the composer; opera publication by Universal Music Publishing Ricordi, performance in the organizing theatres; Second prize of 2,000.00 (two thousand), to the composer; opera publication by Universal Music Publishing Ricordi, performance in the organizing theatres; Greek National Opera of Athens, at its own discretion, reserves the right to assign a special prize to a Greek composer. Jury can also give mention to operas not awarded. Art. 6 Board of Examiners: regular members One international renowned composer Chairman; The Artistic Director of Fondazione Arena di Verona; The Artistic Director of Greek National Opera; The Artistic Director of Magyar Állami Operaház; The Artistic Director of Teatro Amazonas Manaus;
One musician representative Verona Accademia per l Opera Italiana; add members The Director of Liszt Academy of Budapest; One musician representative Accademia Filarmonica di Verona; The Artistic Director of Istituto Italiano per l Opera e la Poesia; One musician representative Universal Music Publishing Ricordi ; The decisions of the Jury are definitive. Art. 7 Universal Music Publishing Ricordi will arrange the publication of awarded operas. It also can publish others finalist operas. Art. 8 The winning operas will be performed in the theatres of Verona, Athens, Budapest and Manaus during the 2010/2011 season; operas without awards could also be performed. Art. 9 During the awards and performances the theatres will give hospitality to the composers. Art. 10 Limitations Opera librettos must be written in one of the UE languages and translated into Italian or English. The scores must be realized as follow: Maximum five solo performers ; Optional chorus min. 18 max. 24 members; Instrumental forces between fourteen and twenty performers (string quintet, wind quintet more trumpet and trombone, percussions, keyboards, harp and eventual four double any of the
strings) - are allowed pre-recorded tracks that do not involve the presence of more than a technician during the executions; Composition lasting between twenty-five and forty-five minutes; Single stage system; If the composition contains novel graphic notation, the composer must give explanatory information for a correct understanding, both in the project and in the complete opera; Art. 11 Each composer may participate with several works. At the first stage, the composer must send the libretto or scores anonymously, distinguished only by a motto ; this phrase will be quoted on a sealed envelope containing the following documentation: 1) The composer s statement certifying that the composition has never been published, performed or received awards in any other competition; 2) Name, Surname, place and date of birth, nationality, home address, e-mail address and telephone number; 3) Three recent photographs; 4) Statement of permission for free audio or video recordings by theatres; 5) Statement of permission for free audio or video recordings by press; 6) Statement of acceptance that Universal Music Publishing Ricordi publish the winning composition or, if the composer is bound to another publisher, a disclaimer (of the publishing house) for a publication by Universal Music Publishing Ricordi ; 7) Curriculum Vitae; 8) Authorization for Verona Accademia per l Opera Italiana, in accordance with art. 10 of Italian Law 31/12/1996, n.675, to handle the personal data supplied in order to participate in the Competition. These data will be used exclusively for the purposes of the administration of this Competition; 9) Copy of the receipt of payment of 100.00 (hundred) for each work submitted to the competition as Competition admission fee, addressed to:

Art. 12 At the end of Competition, the applicant, at his/her expense, can request the restitution of opera project, scores and libretto; however, a copy will be retained in the archive of the Verona Accademia per l Opera Italiana and Fondazione Arena di Verona ; Art. 13 The application for participation in the Competition implies complete acceptance of these regulations. Failure to respect the rules contained in this announcement will entail the forfeiture of any right deriving from the results of the competition. In case of disputes only the Italian version of this announcement will have legal value. Any legal lawsuit will be submitted for settlement to the court of Verona.
