Is a Career in Automation for You?

Do any of the following characteristics describe you? You like to work with your hands as well as with your mind. Machines and computers fascinate you; you want to learn how they work and how they can be put to new uses. You re excited by the idea of exploring new or advanced technology. You work well with others as part of a team. You love the challenge of solving problems. If these descriptions fit you, you may be ready to enter the field of automation. Men and women with a wide variety of educational backgrounds are designing secure futures in this dynamic, challenging, and rewarding field. They are earning excellent salaries and professional respect while enjoying exciting work that matches their talents and interests.

Imagine a career in exciting areas like: Aerospace Industries Analysis Automatic Control Systems Basic Measurement Chemical & Petroleum Industries Computer Networks Computer Technology Construction & Design Electro-Optics Environmental Applications Food & Pharmaceutical Industries Glass & Ceramics Industries Management Marketing & Sales Mining & Metals Industries Power Industry Process Measurement & Control Pulp & Paper Industry Robotics & Expert Systems Safety Sensors Systems Integration Telemetry & Communication Test Measurement Textiles Industry Water & Wastewater Industries It s possible when you re an automation professional!

Career Choices While the opportunities in automation are numerous, most jobs fall into one of four general categories: Engineering and design automation professionals in these positions research, design, build, and operate various systems and instruments to measure, control, and automate manufacturing processes. These jobs are vital to companies that manufacture products such as chemicals, paper, automobiles, and instruments, and to educational institutions. Sales engineering companies rely on automation professionals to advise and assist clients and customers on the application, purchase, installation, and maintenance of available products and systems in order to improve the efficiency, output, and safety of manufacturing and industrial processing operations. Management automation professionals interested in management careers rise to leading positions throughout the numerous manufacturing and industrial processing sectors of the global economy. Engineering and maintenance technicians play key roles in installing, maintaining, trouble-shooting, and repairing various components of automation systems.

Automation and You! Which of these modern products and conveniences have you used this month: a TV, a car, running water, electric lights, an ipod, or a computer? Do you ever travel by airplane or use a microwave oven? Have you ever taken medicine or had an x-ray? Each of these modern necessities is the result of complex processes. Without talented individuals to design, build, and maintain those processes, these technological advances could never have happened and future innovation would be impossible. Without automation professionals, our world and our future would look very different. Automation has become ingrained into the structure of our lives whether we actively realize it or not. And those men and women who have chosen careers within automation have become instrumental in shaping that structure. They conceive, design, build, operate, and maintain the processes that make our 21st century lifestyle possible. These automation professionals know their careers have a future because they help build the future!

Automation professionals are essential to virtually every manufacturing process, whether they serve as technicians, technologists, engineers, or managers. Manufacturing and industrial processes rely on a series of complex operations systems. And these complex systems must be regulated using various instrumentation and control devices. And often these systems, instruments, and control devices employ programmable response and action devices automation. Automation works to ensure the highest and most consistent quality from manufactured products. It is why you expect every soft drink, every spark plug, and every tube of toothpaste to be of a consistently high quality. Positions in automation offer excellent pay and benefits because of the requisite level of skill and responsibility involved. As you grow in this profession, you will earn respect in a field that offers a variety of career choices and excellent job security. Because of their broad understanding of production processes, automation professionals have excellent opportunities for advancement into management positions. No matter which path you choose, your education will continue throughout your career in automation. Continuing professional development and training are a must in this rapidly changing field. Select almost any industry, anywhere. Automation technologies are not only part of that industry, but, from plastics to cars, they are critical to production. Men and women who specialize in automation conceive, design, build, operate, and maintain these vital systems. Instruments and control systems measure, analyze, and manipulate factors such as temperature, flow, pressure, level, velocity, and composition in a variety of manufacturing, scientific, and technical applications. As a student considering this field, you have an immense array of choices. The preparation you make now is an exciting first step toward your professional future. ISA is a participating body of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), which accredits engineering and engineering technology education programs. ISA also develops standards for the profession and provides information and support to its members. Part of that support has been the area of credentialing. ISA s Certified Automation Professional (CAP ) program provides recognition and enhances qualifications in the automation industry.

Recognition Recognition of your achievements is critical when you seek employment. As a student, you can earn recognition leading to certification as an automation professional or technician. ISA offers two associate programs to help you. ISA Control Systems Technician (CST) Associate Program The ISA CST Associate program recognizes a commitment to a career in automation and control and shows that educational accomplishments are only the beginning. An ISA CST Associate has specialized work experience and/or an educational background in instrumentation and control, or a related field, and has successfully completed an ISA examination. The ISA CST Associate examination measures a fundamental understanding of knowledge in instrumentation and control. Successfully completing the CST Associate exam equals one year of education good toward the Level I Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST ) requirements. ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP ) Associate Program The ISA CAP Associate program is for students graduating from a four-year technical degree program who are interested in working in the field of automation. This program provides recognition of the student s interest and knowledge of automation. Although the CAP Associate program is not a certification program, it provides an additional credential for graduating students, expands their resumes, and demonstrates to future employers an interest in furthering their careers in automation. Successfully completing the CAP Associate exam equals one year of experience good toward the Certified Automation Professional (CAP) requirements. Note: These recognition programs are not certifications. Those who take either associate exam may be interested in pursuing the CCST or CAP certification, once the education and /or experience level required is reached.
