An apprenticeship or traineeship is a state training contract between an employer and an employee. Want to get an apprenticeship or traineeship? There are hundreds of apprenticeship and traineeship pathways in most industries where apprentices and trainees learn valuable industry skills and gain workplace experience for a particular occupation or trade. The training can take place either in the workplace, or at FedUni. While you are an apprentice or trainee, you will experience a combination of training methods to achieve your qualification as designed in your training plan. Apprenticeships An employer agrees to employ and train you until all competencies are achieved or for the term of the apprenticeship contract, if required. Apprenticeships usually take 3 4 years of full-time employment and training. You agree to follow instructions and attend required off-the-job and/or workplace-based training as outlined in your training plan. After the 3 month probationary period has passed, training contracts between the apprentice and the employer are legally binding. Once the probationary period of your training agreement has passed, all parties must agree in order for the contract to be cancelled. In the instance when the employer has an apprentice and sells the business, the apprentice s training contract is continued with the new business owners. Traineeships An employer agrees to employ you for the term of the traineeship. You agree to follow instruction and attend structured training. If an employer sells the business, the new owner is not obligated to keep you as a trainee. Mutual agreement is not required if you or your employer wish to end the traineeship contract. Traineeships usually take 12 18 months of full-time employment and training. As an apprentice or trainee you will: earn a wage as you train and develop your practical skills and knowledge receive a nationally accredited qualification enjoy flexible training arrangements receive workplace training and support benefit from the career opportunities generated by your employer What do I need to do next? You must secure employment as an apprentice or trainee before any trade training can occur. You may also be able to start a part-time apprenticeship/ traineeship while still at school. There are a number of ways this can be managed and may include working in industry two days a week and going to trade school three days a week. How can I start an apprenticeship or traineeship? 1. Think about what areas you would like to work in (most careers now have apprenticeships and traineeships available). 2. Consider doing a preapprenticeship. See next page. 3. Update your resume. 4. Visit employers to drop off your resume and impress them with your enthusiasm. Speak to your local Group Training organisations, visit employment network providers, and check out local papers and employment websites. 5. Try volunteering your time and gain experience in the industry of your choice. 6. Be persistent! Contact us to receive information about training as an apprentice or trainee on 1800 333 864 or info@federation.edu.au FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA 2016 COURSE GUIDE 9
A pre-apprenticeship program gives you skills, knowledge and a pathway into an apprenticeship. What do pre-apprentices learn? Pre-apprentices learn the hands-on skills which employers need. You will learn how to use the tools for your trade as well as train on full size, up-to-date equipment in true to life situations. The work that you do during a pre-apprenticeship may give you credit towards your apprenticeship studies. Pre-Apprenticeships The aim of a pre-apprenticeship is to teach you about your chosen career and to demonstrate to an employer that you have the skills and ability to succeed in an apprenticeship. Most pre-apprenticeship programs run for 14 to 18 weeks. During this time, you will study on-campus at FedUni. Some of the pre-apprenticeship programs include a work placement component, where you will have on-the-job work experience with local businesses. Three good reasons to study at FedUni s Industry Skills Centre Great teachers Our teachers have worked in industry, and understand what it takes to become a successful trades person. They have been apprentices, and know what it s like to be starting out in the industry. Great facilities State-of-the-art trade training facilities include the Building and Construction Training Centre, which houses all of the construction trades, fully operating commercial kitchens as well as the Rural Sciences Skills Centre and the brand new Manufacturing Engineering Skills Centre. Great industry contacts As our teachers have trades experience and because FedUni has a long history in the trade training business, we have close ties with local industries and businesses. This results in a very high placement rate of pre-apprentices into apprenticeships with local companies. Successful completion of a preapprenticeship can reduce the time it takes to complete your apprenticeship by up to 6 months. Pre-apprentices also gain valuable assistance with job searching skills, which will help you successfully find an apprenticeship when you have finished your program. How to apply Most of the pre-apprenticeship programs have two intakes each year, usually in February and July. In the lead up to the start of term, many of the programs will have an information session or invite you to attend an interview. s can be made using the application form for VET (TAFE) programs. If you need help applying, contact us on 1800 333 864 and we can provide you with information for the next intake. ATAR Australian Tertiary Admission Rank The ATAR is not the only mechanism used for selection at FedUni, and it is not used for all applications. A large number of programs use a range of other selection mechanisms such as interviews, performance auditions, assessment of folios and supplementary forms. It is advised that you check each program s requirements to ensure you are eligible for entry. Entry into FedUni is based on the achievement of the prerequisites for study. Although your ATAR is a consideration, the University places more emphasis on your potential to succeed at university study and on your achievement of the entry requirements for your chosen degree. As a regional university, we acknowledge that our students need to be assessed on their potential to succeed. As long as you have met the entry prerequisites, FedUni will consider your application. Refer to the VTAC guide for current entry requirements, visit vtac.edu.au Consideration on equity grounds We place a high importance on providing equal opportunities for all applicants. This value is upheld by offering a range of educational opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. VTAC applications If you apply via VTAC and you wish to be considered for entry based on any one of these categories please refer to the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) information at vtac.edu.au/seas.html application If you are required to apply directly to the University and feel that your eligibility for entry was lowered by circumstances during your education (such as having a disability, being from a non-english speaking background, living in a rural or isolated location, being affected by financial hardship or having a major setback during your studies) you can ask for this to be taken into account when your application is considered. Please include an additional personal statement to your application. For more information contact 1800 333 864 or info@federation.edu.au Deferring (putting your studies on hold) In most instances you can defer your offer in an undergraduate program for up to one year. This is a great option if you re considering a gap year or need time away from study for another reason. Deferment is not granted automatically, and can be requested online as part of the offer process. In some instances deferral is not possible due to the audition component of selection. If you have questions about deferring your program, please contact us on 1800 333 864 or email admissions@federation.edu.au Contacting VTAC 1300 364 133 vtac.edu.au 40 Park Street, South Melbourne, VIC 3205 All VTAC applications are submitted online. Internet access points are available at FedUni to provide access to the VTAC website services. For more information, visit vtac.edu.au More opportunities for regional students with Open Access Open Access at FedUni is aimed at providing more opportunities for regional and rural students to study in higher education. Entry into our range of Open Access programs is based on applicants meeting prerequisite study requirements, rather than a minimum ATAR. For current year 12 students this means your ATAR is not a factor in our decision to provide you with an offer provided you have met the prerequisites of your chosen program. Visit federation.edu.au/openaccess for a full list of available programs Extra requirements s for study may need to be accompanied by further information, or have additional steps to apply. These extra requirements can include an interview, audition, literacy test or portfolio. If there are extra application requirements, you will find them in the program listing or at federation.edu.au/extra-application-requirements Police Check A Police Check is required to participate in some industries. One of the biggest questions you may be asking yourself is how much your studies will cost. Let s talk about money Along with course and student services and amenities fees, you may also need to pay for textbooks, excursions, equipment or uniforms. We re here to help with financial advice and assistance, to make your study experience as stress-free as possible. VET (TAFE) fees The best starting point for information about VET (TAFE) fees is online at federation.edu.au/tafefees We strongly recommend all students who wish to study a VET (TAFE) program at FedUni view this information, as it includes important details about government-funded training and requirements. Students may be eligible for Government supported places if they meet the eligibility criteria and provide the required evidence. Some programs will be subject to material and excursion fees and this information is available from the program area. If you re an eligible concession card holder, you may also benefit from a lower tuition fee. Some programs are eligible for VET FEE-HELP which enables eligible students to defer their payment to the Australian Taxation Office and will only be liable to repay this once their salary reaches the relevant thresholds. Higher education fees All FedUni undergraduate (bachelor) programs, and some postgraduate level programs, offer Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). This means that if you re enrolled in an eligible program as a domestic student, the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of education and you will only need to pay the Student Contribution Amount (SCA). Your annual SCA is based on the following bands and varies depending on what you re studying. You ll be invoiced per semester, and you are only charged for the subjects you are enrolled in during that teaching period. 2015 Annual Student Contribution Amounts (SCA) per Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (EFTSL) Band 1 (maximum SCA $ 6,152 per EFTSL): Behavioural Science, Clinical Psychology, Foreign Languages, Humanities, Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts Band 2 (maximum SCA $ 8,768 per EFTSL): Agriculture, Allied Health, Built Environment, Computing, Engineering, Mathematics, Other Health, Science, Statistics, Surveying Payment options (CSP) If you are an eligible domestic student you can defer payment of your Student Contribution Amount until you are earning more than the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment ($53,345 in 2014-15), through the HECS-HELP scheme. This makes the cost of higher education much more manageable, as you don t need to pay your Student Contribution Amount while you re studying. You also have the option of making full or partial payments before the census date of each teaching period. New Zealand citizens and holders of permanent resident visas (excluding holders of a permanent humanitarian visa) are not eligible for the Higher Education Loan Programs (HECS-HELP) and do not receive a discount for upfront payments. Further information about Student Contribution Amounts and the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) schemes can be found at studyassist.gov.au. You can also contact FedUni Student Finance on 1800 333 864, email studentfees@federation.edu.au or visit federation.edu.au/studentfees for more information. Band 3 (maximum SCA $10,266 per EFTSL): Accounting, Administration, Commerce, Dentistry, Economics, Law, Medicine, Veterinary Science FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA 2016 COURSE GUIDE 13
Student financial assistance We offer financial assistance options to eligible students. This assistance is available for a variety of purposes to assist students to complete their studies. Student Services and Amenities Fee FedUni uses the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) to provide you with a range of services, such as sporting and recreational activities, employment and career advice, child care, financial advice and other support services. Postgraduate fees If you re enrolling in postgraduate study that is fee paying (non-csp) and nonresearch, and you re a domestic student, you have the option of taking out a FEE- HELP (Higher Education Loan Program) loan for your tuition fees. This Commonwealth loan, like HECS-HELP, is part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) and voluntary payments can be made to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) at any time. Tuition fees for fee-paying students range from $15,000 to $27,500 per year per EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) depending on the field of study and the duration. Fees may be subject to change without prior notification. Students are invoiced per semester, and are only charged for the subjects they are enrolled in during that teaching period. Further information about the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) schemes can be found at studyassist.gov.au. You can also contact FedUni Student Finance on 1800 333 864, email studentfees@federation.edu.au or visit federation.edu.au/studentfees for more information. Higher Degrees by Research Domestic students enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research are provided with a Research Training Scheme place, which covers tuition fees. Additional costs You may have other costs on top of your tuition fees, which can vary between TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate programs. For example, TAFE programs are likely to have more materials costs because they tend to be more practical. You should also consider other costs such as textbooks.
