Malting Barley Report August 30 2012 Sweden East West: 15% of barley production in Harvest of wheat but also some malting barley has started. So far about 35% of the malting barley has been cut. Protein average below 9% and screening around 85% but still too early to say. South 40% of malting barley production in 85% of the malting barley harvested. Protein average 9,5% and screening above 90%. Yields better 15% better than normal. o Viking Malt Lake of Mälaren 30% of malting barley production in Farmers have started harvesting wheat but so far only small amounts of malting barley harvested. East 15% of malting barley production in Now about 20% harvested. First results showing same picture as South. Harvest continues under good weather conditions.

After some delay harvest has started in all parts of Sweden The weather conditions in the south of Sweden have been close to perfect the last two weeks and harvest has been intense the last ten days. Harvest of rapeseed and rye is completed and farmers are now focusing on wheat and malting barley. Yields for grain in general and certainly malting barley are better than expected. Protein is somewhat lower than normal and there are also some problems with green kernels due to second growth. Last week harvest started also further up north in Harvest has been interrupted by some rain. In general winter wheat is more ready to cut than malting barley and still to make any clear statements about quality. Some malting barley has been cut in the western parts where acreage of winter wheat is much smaller than normal. Also in the west yields are promising but the protein on the low side due to the good yield levels and huge amounts of rain during the summer.

Pre-Samples Results Sweden Crop 2012 Gelatinization Temperature Sweden Crop 2001-2012 Test from the first samples showed gelatinization temperatures at average level and in line with last year s values.

Lithuania: After slow start with a lot of showers harvest of malting barley now close to completed with about 90 % harvested. Average yield from our barley suppliers about 5 ton/ha - which is much over the 5 years mean of about 3,5 ton/ha. Malting barley proteins are in a good range with an average of about 10,5%. Calibration above 2,5 mm over 90%. Very few samples have observable red kernels. Pre-Samples Results Lithuania Crop 2012

Finland Conditions and field remarks The malting barley harvesting is going on now in the South of Finland The harvesting period will be rather long due to scattered sowing time No long term rains received or expected for the coming forecast period First reports from the yields of different crops have been mainly good No Fusarium problems expected based on first pre samples received Expectations The warm and dry period is still important for the rest of the crop harvesting The crop expectation is still good in terms of quantity and quality First pre sample malting barley results from Finland Variety Harbinger Xanadu Scarlett Polartop (6 row) Moisture % 14,9 12,5 14,4 13,1 Protein % 10,5 10,7 11,5 12,2 Starch % 63 62 62 60 Germination capacity % - 97 97 - Grading >2,5 mm % 99 89 96 86
