Hybrid Rye for Biogas Trial Results 2012/13 KWS UK
Varieties in test Variety Type Market Seed Rates (seeds/m 2 ) KWS Progas Hybrid Rye Biogas WCS 200, 250, 300 KWS Magnifico Hybrid Rye Biogas WCS 200, 250, 300 Visello Hybrid Rye Grain Rye 200, 250, 300 Triticale Triticale Grain or WCS 300 KWS Winter Wheat Winter Wheat Grain 300 KWS Spring Wheat Spring Wheat Grain 300 2
Trial Design 2 sowing/harvest dates Drilled 23 October 2012 Harvested 10 July 2013 Drilled 11 December 2012 Harvested 17 July 2013 Three seed rates Low 200/m 2 for sowing time Medium 250/m 2 by given advice High 300/m 2 to match October cereal rates Trials located at Fowlmere, Hertfordshire 3 replicates of each treatment Randomised block design 3
Dry Matter yield (T/ha) Results: Dry Matter Yields First sowing 23 October LSD 5% =
Trial Commentary first sowing There is no significant difference between KWS PROGAS and KWS MAGNIFICO There is a significant difference between KWS PROGAS, KWS MAGNIFICO and Triticale, winter wheat and spring wheat KWS PROGAS and KWS MAGNIFICO significantly out yielded the grain Rye, VISELLO except for the highest seed rate (300 seeds/m 2 ) DM% averaged 36.1% on the first sowing date Please note this is one trial site in one year in one location, so please treat the results with caution as you may see different results under your own circumstances. 5
Dry Matter yield (T/ha) Results: Dry Matter Yields Second sowing 11 December LSD 5% =
Trial Commentary second sowing Note: This second sowing date had a high CV (co-efficient of variation) of 9, we would normally expect 4. CV is the measure of variability within a trial and this CV indicates there is a high level of noise around these results. There was no significant difference between KWS PROGAS and KWS MAGNIFICO except for the highest seed rate (300 seeds m 2 ) There was no significant difference between the Triticale at 300 seeds m 2 and KWS PROGAS and KWS MAGNIFICO There was a significant difference between KWS PROGAS and KWS MAGNIFICO and the spring and winter wheat DM% averaged 38.4% on the second sowing date, harvested 1 week later Please note this is one trial site in one year in one location, so please treat the results with caution as you may see different results under your own circumstances. 7
Overall Summary It seems that a higher seed rate will offer a higher yield potential for Whole Crop Silage (WCS). There are management considerations to creating to thicker plant stand depending on season. Hybrid Rye has a higher dry matter yield than winter wheat, spring wheat and triticale Biogas Hybrid Rye has a higher dry matter yield than Grain Hybrid Rye Please note this is one trial site in one year in one location, so please treat the results with caution as you may see different results under your own circumstances. 8
