1 Dolby Digital in Nero Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator and Nero Open Up New, Fantastic Possibilities With the DVD-Video Multichannel Plug-in you can now create DVDs in digital surround sound quality and unequaled cinema sound quality from the comfort of your living room. That is not only very easy thanks to the latest standard in the field of audio technology, but the DVD-Video Multichannel Plug-in also offers you improved quality while you save 25% storage space in comparison to PCM stereo. Burn Video Files With Perfect Sound for Every DVD Player The plug-in allows you to use the different Nero applications to rework the stereo sound of your audio files into outstanding Dolby Digital quality. It also allows you to play your audio files in perfect sound quality with up to 5.1 audio channels. This tutorial shows you how you can very quickly and easily profit from the advantages of Dolby Digital technology in Nero. The Multichannel Plug-in and DVD Video Multichannel Plug-in are included in the full version of Nero. You can find more information on the Multichannel Plug-in and/or DVD Video Multichannel Plug-in under www.nero.com. 1.1 What is Dolby Digital? Dolby Digital is the digital successor of Dolby Surround. Numerous applications of the Nero program package offer the worldwide leading standard for audio playback through the DVD Video Multichannel Plug-in. Dolby Digital has been developed for cinemas and home cinemas and delivers first class sound with up to 5.1 separate channels. The multichannel sound system can even convert mono or stereo signals into Dolby Digital format. With Dolby Digital 2.0, two independent surround channels transfer the complete audio bandwidth for each channel and provide real surround sound in stereo quality with improved audio playback. Dolby Digital 5.1 has a separate channel for the left, right, and middle speakers at the front side of the room, two surround speakers on the sides, and a subwoofer for powerful base sound in the lower frequency range. With the Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator you can efficiently archive your home videos: the separate sound channels are compressed to a single digital data stream. During playback, the decoder reproduces the original multichannel sound - for each speaker a channel. You can play a video DVD which was produced with Dolby Digital on any standard player. 3

1.2 Dolby Digital in the Applications Numerous applications of the Nero program package (e.g. Nero Recode and Nero WaveEditor) offer the selection of the outstanding surround sound system for your audio files with which you can easily attain even higher sound quality. For example, you can place different media types in a Nero Home playlist and save them in a slide show with videos and pictures accompanied by background music. You can select Dolby Digital as the audio format for the export of slide shows by simply going into Settings for Slide Shows and selecting Dolby Digital stereo as the Audio Format. Nero Vision allows you to transfer your videos from DV video cameras or other external video devices to your computer; you can also, for example, burn them as a DVD video or save them in the hard drive folder. You can set Dolby Digital in the video options of the desired disc format by opening the Default Video Options in the expanded area. On the tab of the appropriate disc format, proceed by selecting the Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1 entry [and/or the Dolby Digital (AC-3) 2.0 entry] as the Audio Format. 4

Nero ShowTime plays all digital recordings (films, TV series, home videos, as well as the DVD format) in excellent picture and sound quality. Nero ShowTime supports Dolby Digital AC3 for playback on speakers! To do so, simply select the Dolby Surround Compatible entry as Output mode in the Options window under the Audio navigation item. Instead of simply placing audio files into a playlist for the creation of audio CDs, you 5

can professionally mix or change the contents of your audio files with Nero SoundTrax. A detailed description of how you can use Dolby Digital in Nero SoundTrax can be found under Surround Sound in Nero SoundTrax. A detailed description of how Dolby Digital can also be applied in the mentioned applications can be found in the respective user manual. 1.2.1 Surround Sound in Nero SoundTrax Proceed as follows to use Nero SoundTrax to edit and mix audio files for playback in an appropriate surround system: 1. Start Nero SoundTrax. > A window will open in which you have access to templates, user templates, wizards, as well as existing projects. Nero SoundTrax offers templates for often used projects (e.g. CD mix, stereo projects, and surround projects). The following options are available for 5.1 and for 7.1 speakers: > All speakers will receive a sound track. 6

> Each speaker will receive its own, separate channel. > The content of the LFC channel (i.e. the low frequency channel) is automatically generated. 2. Click the desired template. >> The selected project template will be opened in the appropriate window and you can edit the individual tracks as per usual at this point. See Changing Surround Sound Allocation if you want to change the sound allocation of the individual speakers in the room. A detailed description of how you can edit tracks in other ways can be found in the Nero SoundTrax user manual. Examples are changing track properties, inserting audio clips, and inserting/editing volume or pan curves. 1.2.1.1 Changing Surround Sound Allocation Nero SoundTrax offers the feature of allocating different output levels to the speakers during playback of a track; this changes the center of the sound so that it "migrates". Proceed as follows to change the sound allocation of the individual speakers in the room: 1. In the Surround Sound Allocation field located in the Track area, click on the green dot, hold down the mouse button, and move the dot. The general principle: the sound on the right speakers become louder when the dot is moved to the right; the left speakers become louder when the dot is moved to the left. If you place the dot in the corner above a speaker, then only that particular speaker will provide sound. You place a speaker on mute by double clicking it so that it is colored in yellow. > The dot movement is marked by key points in the track indicator. A key point can be identified by its dashed line and the diamond shaped top. 2. If you want to move a key point in the track, click the diamond shaped top of the key point and move it to the right or left. 3. If you want to erase a key point, click the diamond shaped top of the key note and press the delete key (Delete) on your keyboard. >> You have changed the Surround Sound Allocation of the track. 7
