Whitgift Centre The largest shopping centre in Croydon is the Whitgift Centre, which was originally opened in 1970. It was refurbished in the mid 1990 s but is now looking dated. (Until Westfield London opened, it was the largest covered shopping centre in London). The area is run down and ripe for regeneration South London does not have a major shopping centre destination
The Opportunity An opportunity to create a south London Westfield hub to complement the western and eastern hubs of Westfield London and Westfield Stratford. Little or no overlap with the catchment for these two centres. Croydon is an important centre in south London. Historically, Croydon was even more important centre but it has suffered from a lack of investment and failed efforts to develop a new shopping centre over the past two decades. Croydon has excellent communications and strong links with Central London. A new centre would be part of a wider regeneration of the area s tired office stock.
