GITA KRISHNAMURTHY VIDYALAYA, SANKARNAGAR, TIRUNELVELI DISTRICT, TAMILNADU, INDIA ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013

Gita Krishnamurthy Vidyalaya was started at Sankarnagar in June 2009 in memory of Mrs. Gita Krishnamurthy, a teacher who dedicated her life for teaching. Gita Krishnamurthy Vidyalaya is a sister school of Sri Jayendra Golden Jubilee School and it was started with the objective of extending quality education to the poor children of rural areas so as to give them a chance to catch up with the rest of the children who are able to afford better educational facilities. The school is a joint project of Gita Krishnamurthy Trust and Sri Jai Sankara Educational Trust. The School is administered by Sri Jai Sankara Educational Trust and a Management Committee comprising of Trustees from both the Trust, oversee the functioning of the school. The school was formally opened on June 05, 2009. The School, now in its fourth year of operation, has a strength of 350 children, from LKG to Class 4, in two sections each of LKG, UKG and Class1 and Class 2 and one section each of Class 3 and 4. The successful running of the school is explicit from the fact that there has not been even a single dropout since the inception of the school. Also we have been achieving 99.5 attendance for the past four years. The school is becoming very popular in spite of being run in a small rented building. The demand for admission is enhancing many folds every year and it is beyond our means to admit all the children who seek admission. OUR CURRICULUM Our curriculum is designed to bring about all round development of students. We believe in developing the whole child and in developing each child at his or her own pace. The following subjects form a part of the curriculum: English, Tamil, Number work and Environmental Science. Our approach combines the traditional learning styles along with the breadth and balance offered by a network of activities. Due importance is given to art activities, music, sports and games. Every morning begins with a common assembly and prayer. Children s birthdays are recognized and birthday song is sung for the children in the school assembly.

Functions & Celebrations in the School Independence Day Celebration: GKV Children joined with the students of Jayendra School to celebrate the Independence day on the 15 th of August. The children took part in group singing of patriotic songs along with Jayendrans. The National Flag was hosted by Mrs. Usha Raman. Children performed various skits on social themes. Christmas Celebrations Christmas celebrations were held in the school on the 23 rd of December. Children thoroughly enjoyed the visit of Santa to the school. Christmas Carols were sung and Santa gave away chocolates to the kids.

Functions & Celebrations in the School Sports Day ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 Sports Day Celebrations and Miniconvocation were held on 11.04.2013 in the campus of Sri Jayendra Golden Jubilee School, Sankarnagar. Mr. Bhasker and Mrs. Asha Bhasker graced the occasion with their presence and distributed the prizes. Various sports events like Musical Chair, Passing the ball, Bursting the Balloon, Picking up Balls, Obstacle race and Running Race were conducted for the students. Prizes were distributed by Mr. Bhasker and Mrs Nirmal Ramarathinam.

Functions & Celebrations in the School ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 Mini Convocation Mini Convocation for the students who have passed out of Kindergarten was organized immediately after sports events on 11.04.2013. Tiny tots were conferred with Kindergarten Diplomas by Mr. Bhasker and Mrs. Aasha Bhasker.

Mr. Nigel Wray s Visit Mr. Nigel Wray a major donor & patron of Sri Jai Sankara Educational Trust visited G.K.V. on 05.11.2012. Children greeted and extended their warm welcome to Mr. Nigel Wray. Many of them presented him with Greeting Cards. He was very impressed with the work done at GKV.

Mr. Venkat Krishnamurthy s Visit It was a great delight that Mr. Venkat Krishnamurthy, the son of Mr. Krishnamurthy the founder of GKV visited the school on 11.01.2013. He spent one full day with the children of the school. Tree Planting Ceremony In the evening we had the opportunity of laying saplings in the site where the proposed school building for GKV is going to be built. Sri Krishna Mines, Sankarnagar as part of their CSR Programme took part in the tree planting ceremony and d istributed saplings. A function was organized at Jayendra School to commemorate the event. Mr. Venkat Krishnamurthy addressed the children on the occasion when he spoke about the contribution of his mother Mrs. Gita Krishnamurthy for the cause of education.

Special Lunch for Children As usual lunches were organized for children to mark certain special occasions.

Partnership Programme International Link With Emanuel School, London, UK. Thanks to Rev. Paul Hunt, we are initiating a three-way partnership with Emanuel school, Christ Church Primary School in London & Gita Krishnamurthy Vidyalaya. A team of fourteen students and four staff headed by Rev. Paul Hunt visited Sri Jayendra School and GKV in July 2012 and stayed with us for three weeks which were packed with plenty of activities for GKV children. The partnership programme not only opened up an opportunity for our children to learn English from native speakers but it also took them beyond boundaries to interact with friends from the other side of the globe enabling them to understand and learn many things which cannot be taught within the four walls of the classrooms through textbooks. The volume of emotions and experiences shared cannot be confined in words. We believe that this link will be a very meaningful one benefitting GKV in many dimensions.

We owe whatever we have achieved till date to our supporters and well wishers. We solicit your continued support to help us upgrade the school into a high school which seems inevitable at this stage. We sincerely believe and hope that you will help us achieve our goals. Thank you. Usha Raman, Mentor, Gita Krishnamurthy Vidyalaya, Sankarnagar.
